“Hello, Emma. How are you? I saw your message. I am fine and I just checked out of the hospital a few days ago. I know you are wondering why I am sending this to you instead of calling so I will just get straight to the point; what happened in the school? Is there something I should know? Maybe when we meet you will tell me all about it. Okay? Call me.”
“Hello, Emma. Why haven’t you called me? Is it because of him? If so find a way to sneak out of the house so that we can talk alright? I will be waiting for you in the school.”
“You know what you are Emma? You are a self-sacrificing b!tch. I hate you. Caroline chewed me out when she heard what happened. How I was able to lose to that bastard, I will never know. What I do know is…you did something. You should have just let me die instead of accepting him to be your boyfriend! Look at what you have done! Gosh, you are so stupid!”
“Hello, Emma? Look, I am sorry for what I said. You know, about you being a self-sacrificing bitch. Let’s meet in the school and talk it out okay? Caroline is waiting for you too.”
I looked at the time on my phone and see it was 8 PM. ‘Jake said he would be home by 10 PM. I hope that drawer has the information I need.’
As soon as I was inside the office, I drawers and start searching.
‘Shoot! What is Malcolm’s surname?’ I ask looking through the M section. ‘Why didn’t he use computers instead?’
“Because I am computer illiterate.” a voice said making me jump. I look behind me and see the ghost standing with his hands behind his back and looking like a gentleman.
“Besides, you are not going to find anything there.” He said. “His file was terminated once he left the school.”
“He…he left the school?” I ask.
“He was expelled.” He explains. “He was not a good student because he was always flunking his test and exams and constantly getting into trouble.”
“So he was a delinquent,” I ask.
“Yes, but he was good at sports." He made a gesture with his hand and a drawer opened. I watched in awe as a yellow file floated out of it and landed in my hands.
‘So he is the one responsible for the paranormal activity here.’ I open it and see a picture of a young girl with green eyes and brown pigtails.
“But if you want to know more about them, you should meet Caroline.” He said turning his back to me. “She is waiting for you in her room.”
Then he disappeared. I take a look at the file, close it and walk toward the room.
“I have been expecting you,” she said once I opened the door.
I keep my mouth shut.
“What happened between you and Gwen?” she asks taking a seat. Alice was sitting on a bean bag by the corner and toying with her phone.
I tell her everything and see the anger in her eyes.
“And you agreed?” she yells.
“What was I supposed to do?” I ask back. “He wanted to kill her!”
“So?”
My eyes widened. “So?”
Caroline’s facial expression changed. She stood up and walked towards the window.
“This is bad.” She says. “I did not want him to be a part of this.”
I stay silent for a moment. “Gwen didn’t tell you about him blackmailing me did she?”
“No, she didn’t. Why didn’t you tell me?”
I stared at the shocked expression on her face and knew it was a lie but calling her out was not the option at this point.
She sighed. “Well, it is too late. It won’t be long before he understands what we are up to. The good thing about people like him is the fact they would do anything for their lovers.”
I watch her grab a can of soda and open it. “They even offer themselves on a silver platter.”
She took a sip and gave a little burb while I stared at her in confusion.
“What are you telling me?”
“I am telling you the benefits of taking advantage of people like him,” she said. “You can use him.”
I was confused. "What do you mean?"
"A Yandere would do anything for the one they love and that includes dying for them. You could use him to do all the killing since you don’t want to get your hands dirty.”
I was in shock for a moment. “So what you are saying is, I should manipulate him into helping me with…this?”
She stared at me. “You are not manipulating him. You are only using him to help you.”
“It sounds like manipulation to me.”
“Then how else are you going to get rid of him?”
My tongue was tied.
“You want him out of your life right? The only way to achieve this is through death. Since he wants you to love him so badly you tell him to earn it by protecting you during the operations and when he dies…”
The smirk on her face said it all but I was uncomfortable with this idea and so was my inner voice.
‘Don’t forget he is a human being and he is mentally unstable. Would you be heartless to someone like that?’
‘True but he is a lovesick murderer and I can’t reply to his feelings.’ I argue.
‘Yes but you are no better than someone if you take her advice.’ it said pricking me the more. ‘Remember, you are trying to save others from this curse and that includes him.’
“Trust me, nothing good comes from trusting a…" Caroline said.
I interrupt her. “Caroline?”
“Yes?”
“If he survives, how will I repay him?”
She was taken aback when I asked that. “What do you mean ‘If he survives?’”
“That boy saw things worse than hell itself. What happens if he survives this then? What will I do?”
Now it was her turn to be tongue-tied. “Well…you can…you…you…”
“You said it plain yourself. To get him to protect me, I have to pretend.”
“Yes…”
“That’s the problem. I can’t pretend.”
She took a step back. “What…what do you mean you can’t pretend to love him? You can…”
I shake my head at this. “I am not the type that manipulates someone into doing stuff for me especially if the person I am manipulating loves me and from what I have seen so far, I think it is a bad idea to lure an innocent person into this shenanigan.”
There was a moment of silence as we stared into each other’s eyes until she finally talked.
“Are you crazy Emma?” she asked. “Don’t you want to be free? He is not going to let you go no matter what!”
“I will find a way!” I say with a determined voice.
“Death is the only way!” she screamed making me jump out of my skin. “If you think he is going to…”
“I will do my best to keep him in the dark about this.” I say “That way I won’t have to drag him into this and he won’t have to go crazy about protecting me.”
“And if you die?”
I look away avoiding her gaze. “Then I will accept that as my punishment.”
She takes a step back and grits her teeth. “This means you are no stranger to murder. Tell me, what changed you?”
I say nothing.
“Who did you kill?” She asks again. “Who?”
I bite my tongue and turn my back on her. “It’s none of your business.”
Then I walk out of the room and out of the school. Soon I was in my apartment thinking about what I told her.
‘Trust me you made the right choice.’
‘It’s not that.’ I said sliding down to the floor. ‘I know how it feels to be manipulated by love.’
‘I understand but how would he feel if you died?’
I bite my bottom lip and lean back on the wall. ‘I do not know. I do not know.’
The next day…
'The Madison's were found dead by the time the fire started in their kitchen. It was confirmed that the fire was caused by a gas leakage but what puzzled law enforcement was how fast the fire spread. The bodies of the Madison were found charred with stab wounds in their bodies. The police think Molly must have killed her parents and then herself but her sister’s body was not found. The police also found traces of kerosene was found on the floor leading up to the bedrooms along with the empty barrels of kerosene in the attic. This means someone snuck in, killed the Madison’s caused the fire to cover up their tracks. Police suspect the youngest member in the family; Molly’s younger sister Clair Madison but wondered how a five-year-old girl could do that and run away. Other members of the family were questioned but they were all cleared from any suspicion meaning that this was an outside job...'
I stop reading and think for a moment. 'Could this be an inside job? Maybe a member of the family did that and take his own life rather than go to jail? But the Masons had a good life. What would make someone kill them and himself?'
I open Molly’s file and read it. ‘It says here that she is a rich and studious student whose love interest was Malcolm. Her parents lived in a mansion located on the Southside of town but it is said to be haunted.’
I scroll down and discover that the Madisons didn’t only own the factories, they also were in partnership with Julia's family.
'So they owned the factories at the Southside of town.' I think turning off the computer. ‘The article said everyone in the family had passed away. Does this mean I am missing something? Maybe like a clue?’
Suddenly, my phone rang. It was Gwen and I was scared of picking up the phone because I didn’t call her after hearing her voicemails.
“Hello?”
“Hello, Emma. Is that you?” she asked in a cold voice.
“Yeah, it is me,” I reply.
“Good. Caroline told us we need to search the Madison’s Mansion for clues tomorrow night.”
I shrug and lean back on my chair. “Is Alice going to pick us up?”
“No. I am not riding with her again,” she replied in a hostile voice. “So do you have means of getting there?”
“Yeah, we can use the subway to travel to the Southside of town where the mansion is.”
“The place with the abandoned factories?”
“Yes. Say do you know anything about Madison’s family because I have reached a dead end in my investigation?”
“Molly Mason was a student in our school and she and her family were burnt to death in her home three years ago. Malcolm was Molly's friend from childhood and he went missing three weeks after her death and he is still not found.”
“Wait a minute! He went missing?”
“Yeah.”
“No surprise there. His statement written in the book did not make any sense. How on earth will someone wear a ring on a gloved hand?”
“That is not the only lie he told. It was dark so how did he know that it was the road to the Masons'?”
This made me pause for a moment. “Who told you that?”
“Caroline.”
‘I should not be surprised. She was working with Adrien after all but why is something bugging me? Did she read the book?’
“How is he?”
“Who?”
“Jake.”
I instinctively looked around me but the café was empty. “He is alright.”
There was another moment of silence before she asked me what the information I found on him and I told her.
“Why didn’t you tell me? Why?”
I was taken aback. “Excuse me, I wanted to tell you but you turned off your…”
“You know what? Forget it. We will meet tonight but remember, this is all your fault.”
“What?” she hung up and I stared at my phone in disbelief. ‘My fault? How is this my fault?’
The anger in me gave me enough strength to flip the computer table over but I control myself. ‘My fault? Does she know I did that to save her? Doesn’t she know living with him is scary enough? Didn’t she care?’
My anger slowly turned into sadness and I wipe the tears from my eyes. ‘And to think I was starting to….starting to like her.’
I leave the café and headed home with tears in my eyes but the minute I open the door, Jake scooped me up in his arms.
“Beloved! I made a lot of money last night!” he spun me around. “Now I am going to spoil you silly my love.”
Now I felt irritation creep into my body. ‘Money? Is that what he thinks about? Money?’
He put me down and stared at my tear-stained face in shock. “Beloved, what happened?”
I bite my lip in anger as he swiped his thumb over my cheeks.
“All you lovely essence is wasting away.” He licked my tears off his thumb and cupped my face with his hands. “What is wrong my love? Who made you cry? Tell me who it is. I will make them pay. I promise.”
I looked up at him in anger. “Like the way you made Gwen pay for loving me?”
Then I push past him and rush to the bathroom. Slamming the door behind me, I sit on the floor and cry.
‘You do know she is just guilt tripping you right?’
‘Shut up.’
Third POV
Jake pressed his ears to the bathroom door and felt a mixture of emotions. ‘She is crying for Gwen?’
Then he felt angry. Angry that she was crying because of the b!tch then sad that he made her cry.
Then he felt angry again. ‘It's…it's…it's all the b!tch’s fault. She was in the way! She was threatening our love. Why can’t you see that Beloved? Why can’t you understand that you are mine and mine alone? Are you trying to go back on your word?’
Then his phone beeped with a text and he looked at it.
