Now it was three years after my brother escaped that I finally got out, I was so confused about what was happening it was late at night, pitch black and the quietest night Gotham in a long time...
I was locked in my room like I always were after six o’clock by my mother, recently after a near escape from me climbing out of a tiny window but her hearing me open the stiff window she dragged me back inside and then moved me to the basement where there are no windows and several padlocks on the door making me unable to escape the darkness.
I didn’t know what was happening I was trying to sleep like I do every night and have been doing since my brother left, but every time I fail, I just keep being reminded about what happened to me in those experiments, I heard a loud band upstairs and some screaming, now the banging wasn’t unusual my mum got frustrated easily but the screaming that was.
Knowing me if I could have gone out I would have to see what was happening I was always more curious than Robbie, but no I just went as far away from the door as possible and crouched down in a ball so if you were not looking for me all you would be able to see would be darkness.
The screaming was over faster than what I thought and I was hoping she would be dead she didn’t deserve to live another day but unfortunately she did, anyway it wasn’t long after she stopped screaming that I heard the sirens in the distance and heading in this direction.
As the sirens pulled up outside there was a small concentrated explosion on the basement door blowing the door of its hinges but only falling to the ground, there was a blinding light coming from the entrance with a tall wide shadow in the centre slowly creeping into the room down the steps leading to the ground and then strait towards me.
The shadow looked like an animal with tall pointy ears on the top of its head and its body floating across the ground as if it was flying, sooner or later it stopped in front of me and crouched down reaching out one hand for me to take the animal spoke.
“I’m not going to hurt you; no one is going to hurt you anymore, you’re safe now.” It was in a weird voice one that was put on like it was trying to sound strong kind of husky, groggy almost, I didn’t like it so I just stayed where I was and let him stay where he was.
“I know you’re scared but there is no need, the police are here now we are going to look after you.” The animal spoke once again and lowered his hand.
“Who are you? Why are you here? Where’s my mum? She won’t like you being here you better leave before she finds you down here, she gets angry really quickly.” I whispered unsure about what was going to happen.
“Hey it okay she won’t hurt you anymore we are here to help, we are going to get you a new home with a new family who will look after you and care for you there is no need to worry okay.”
“Who... who are you, how did you find me? Where are you going to take me? I don’t want them to find me.” At this point I was starting to panic I didn’t know what he was going to do with me how could I trust him? I couldn’t even see his face.
“It’s okay, I’m Batman, the police are here to look after you now, shall we go to them so they don’t have to come find us?”
“Batman? What sought of name is that? Are you crazy or something that’s not a real name” I started to giggle at the thought of his name, he doesn’t look anything like a bat kind of like a meerkat or just a cat maybe a chiwawa I don’t know anything but a bat.
“It’s my name and I am trying to help you, so come on lets go upstairs” His voice was becoming a little angry, it was funny how easily I could get to him.
“You are trying to save me; I thought that was the job of a superhero? You don’t look like a hero; I thought that they were supposed to be colourful what kind of hero wears black and hide’s in the shadows you’re like a villain not a hero” At this point I was nearly crying with laughter it was so funny looking at the change of emotions on his face you could tell her was getting more angry by the second.
“Now you listen here, I am Batman, get over it, I wear black because I’m not the kind of person which is all loveydubby okay get over it and get upstairs so you can get out of this darkness and I can leave”
“Okay okay I’m going, but can I ask you one question?”
“Well...”
“PPPPLLLEEAAASSSEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE”
“Okay but just one and quickly”
“Okay Batman, why a bat? Why not a different animal? What about a cat that way you could still keep the ears Catman, hey hey I think that works don’t you Catman?”
“Right that’s it get up and go upstairs, no more messing around”
“But you didn’t answer my questionnnnn!”
Silence... he never did answer my question.
I got up from the ground and started to walk over to the stairs into the light where Catman had already disappeared to. As I emerged into the light there where police men were walking around, some taking pictures others talking to this one man who didn’t wear the police uniform, but no sign of the Catman I guess he isn’t one to stick around for a long time.
Not long after me emerging the man without the uniform on walked over and crouched in front of me he had a kind face one which was riddled with worry and experience but never the less I could tell he was kind.
“Hello, my name is Jim Gordon I am the police Commissioner, what is your name?”
“I’m Harleen, Harleen Quinzel.”
“Well Harleen, you’re safe now no one will harm you anymore.” When you’re nine you always think that what adults tell you is true and at this point I wished I could believe him but I knew that it wasn’t true I knew that something was going to happen again, there was no doubt about that...
