I was doodling in a notebook because I was the first to get to the lunch detention. I hadn’t wanted to be the first one there but at this point, I didn’t really care. I didn’t look up when I heard the door open. I was sitting in the back corner of the room just wanting to be left alone. I glanced up just for a moment when I heard someone pulling a chair back.

“Nice fall you had earlier.” he sneered

“Says the famous Harry Potter.” I retorted, looking back to my notebook. He shot me a glare, and slowly grabbed the homework page I was doodling on.

“You know what? I don’t really think you’ll be needing this anymore.” He teased
406Please respect copyright.PENANAPJrQ9nZPLE
“Hey, give it back.” I snapped, getting to my feet and trying to get the paper from him.
406Please respect copyright.PENANA34oJc7K4dT
“Hmmm, I think this will be a really nice addition to my cat's litter box.”
406Please respect copyright.PENANAXDhXOjvtAS
“I’m sorry but the red dot really makes it hard to take you seriously,” I stated, kicking his shin and trying again to grab the paper. The kick was surprisingly hard. The next thing I know, I see Laura walk up behind Jackson and snatch the paper from his hand. She shot him a look as she shoved his chair across the room and handed me back my paper. I mumbled thanks and put it away in my backpack. She stormed over to Jackson and started whisper-yelling at him. They were far away, so I shouldn’t have been able to hear them. But I did.

“What the heck dude?” She whispered “You got to stop pulling that stuff. Lydia is going to see you doing it one day.”

He rolled his eyes and pulled out his phone.

“I’m not sure what's wrong with him today,” she told me when she walked back over. I didn’t answer right away because I was still trying to process the fact that I’d heard their conversation.

“Don’t worry about it,” I muttered, letting my hair fall in a curtain over my face.

“Ok, so I called my aunt, and she said we can take you home with us after school,” she replied
406Please respect copyright.PENANAYZ8WBC902y
“My parents said it was fine.” I lied but I had told so many lies that it sounded believable. I pulled out my lunch but kept my hair hiding my face.

“Ok, great!” she exclaimed while pulling up a chair and taking out a piece of her own homework. She grabbed a pencil from her backpack and started fidgeting with it.
406Please respect copyright.PENANAuoplTDQoEs
“Why are you being nice to me?” I asked, hesitantly moving my hair out of my face. She looked up.
406Please respect copyright.PENANANYtCdXa6pU
“Well, why wouldn’t I be nice?” she asked in turn.
406Please respect copyright.PENANAIi8ad7CGXK
“Usually when people are nice when they want something,” I murmured.
406Please respect copyright.PENANAoIRvgvvaWK
“Welp, I do need a new pencil.” She remarked looking at her now-broken pencil.
406Please respect copyright.PENANASmdDtES2OS
“Didn’t a bunch of them fall out of your bag earlier?” I commented then took a bite of my sandwich.
406Please respect copyright.PENANAtDEXL96Af2
“Yea- wait, you ran out of the classroom before that happened. I dropped my backpack because I was trying to catch up to you.”
406Please respect copyright.PENANAPF9gmrn4XE
My eyes widened. “I um…. Well, what about that guy you were talking to? You seem to like him. I mean you did blush when he was put in our project group.” I said, changing the subject. Her face turned red once again at the mention of him.
406Please respect copyright.PENANAshK98SdeSP
“Oh you know, he's just one of my friends.” She said awkwardly
406Please respect copyright.PENANAtuEY5BKnJM
“Right. Friends.” I muttered, unable to hide the small smirk on my face.
She sat there for a second, thinking. She was about to say something when a red-headed girl stormed up to Jackson.
406Please respect copyright.PENANAMRLmTCqTU9
“Jackson, why didn’t you tell me you were in detention?” she fumed.
406Please respect copyright.PENANA7iYYeF6C1R
“Well, it was for a stupid reason. I left my homework at home.” Laura and I looked up.
406Please respect copyright.PENANAqP7odBUVXD
“Oh? Was that the reason?” I asked, looking over at him. He shot me a nervous glance.
Lydia whipped around.
406Please respect copyright.PENANAsMInSn85ET
“I’m sorry, but I’m not sure how this is any of your business.” she dictated
406Please respect copyright.PENANAr4evSsrQEY
“I'm here because of him. Aren’t you curious about the red dot on his forehead?” I stated.
406Please respect copyright.PENANAPImY2eu4BP
“Well, I-” she stuttered “Let's go, Jackson,” she commanded. As she and Jackson were walking out, she saw Laura and smiled.
406Please respect copyright.PENANA8YJvIJVkpp
“Oh, we are all working on the project tonight at your house. Right?” she asked. Laura nodded.

I sighed and just went back to my lunch. I let my mind wander and stopped paying attention. She started talking about something.
406Please respect copyright.PENANA34mkZBisJZ
“Hello?” She questioned, laughing while waving a hand in front of my face.
406Please respect copyright.PENANARx3nMnFjOu
I blinked in surprise. “What?”
406Please respect copyright.PENANAqnevQGkEXe
“Nevermind.” she chuckled, “I was just ranting about class.”

There were a few moments of silence before my curiosity forced me to break it. “So why was Lydia nice to you?” I asked. She put her homework away and pulled out a bag of goldfish from her backpack.
406Please respect copyright.PENANAvgJYz1GIXd
“Well, you know my sister Allison? She sits on the other side of me in English. Well that's her best friend- wait how do you know Lydia?” she asked with a weird look
406Please respect copyright.PENANAVk2jrxbEii
“Oh, she’s in one of my other classes,” I responded quickly. I had finished my lunch and put the lunchbox back in my backpack. Now I was just tracing random patterns on the desk.
406Please respect copyright.PENANA2Rh1Qjo0qv
“Oh ok,” she replied while placing a fistful of goldfish into her mouth. Something in her tone let me know that she didn’t believe me.
406Please respect copyright.PENANA13DPeJNDH4
“She and that idiot deserve each other,” I muttered. Laura started choking on her goldfish.
I could tell she was laughing and I was able to give a small smile. Laura seemed nice and she also seemed to feel the same way about Jackson and Lydia. I relaxed just a little. I hadn’t realized how tense I’d been.
406Please respect copyright.PENANAUnTYVNpbHp
“Wait so, where did you move from?” she asked after swallowing the goldfish.
406Please respect copyright.PENANAppOqddvmkB
“Arizona,” I answered hesitantly.
406Please respect copyright.PENANAqOmvdz4PpB
“Okay, so now do you want to tell me the truth?” she inquired while popping a goldfish into her mouth
406Please respect copyright.PENANAIg6f52GbjR
“I don’t know what you’re talking about. I moved from Arizona.” I countered, slightly defensive.
406Please respect copyright.PENANAUxlt3xv0Xh
“Well the first time you said it, you were hesitant. If you're going to lie to me you might as well try to sound convincing.” she remarked
406Please respect copyright.PENANAWT7nrqkG6u
“I’m not used to talking to people. I usually just keep to myself.” I said quietly.
406Please respect copyright.PENANAphakTYta22
“I understand, I’m sometimes like that too. But I’m pretty good at telling when someone is lying.” I gave her a visibly uncomfortable smile.
406Please respect copyright.PENANANvo0TJgHpJ
“Alright, then what am I lying about?” I questioned.
406Please respect copyright.PENANAeE0vEOtRkb
“I’m not going to tell you. I’m letting you live with the guilt that you lied to your first friend.” she teased
"You know, you're pretty good at lying?" She asked. Clearly avoiding the fact that she had just called me her friend.
406Please respect copyright.PENANAsVmgZpRVqD
“We aren’t friends,” I stated. There was a visible look of hurt on her face.
406Please respect copyright.PENANAqgbA5coWKT
“It’s not you. It’s me.” I added, quickly.
406Please respect copyright.PENANAkPSV3K44Hm
“Okay ‘non-friend,” she countered while looking up at the clock
406Please respect copyright.PENANAXEFdam5aqJ
“We only have five minutes left. I guess I’ll just sit here and talk to myself.”
406Please respect copyright.PENANAsgjYrduQdS
“Look, I just don’t know how to be friends with someone. I-” I stopped talking. She didn’t need to know.
406Please respect copyright.PENANASeMTZaVDZe
“No- nope it's fine,” she stated, while over-dramatically holding her hand up. She pulled out her phone.
406Please respect copyright.PENANAQwj52Zvq5f
I sighed. I’d probably just screwed up my only chance at having a possible friend. It was better that way though.
“So have you always lived here?” I asked her after a few moments of silence. She looked up.
406Please respect copyright.PENANAHUymPQWk7l
“Well, I came in the middle of the year last year. My parents sent me to a school that was out of the country for a little bit,” she answered.
406Please respect copyright.PENANAauZtSmADWI
“I guess we’re both liars then.” I sighed. She laughed.
406Please respect copyright.PENANAWq6GtVvaH1
“Answer for an answer?”
406Please respect copyright.PENANAH4vyHZOz9Y
“Depends what you want to know.”
406Please respect copyright.PENANAC2kT720ikM
“Well, first I want to know why you lied about your parents.”
406Please respect copyright.PENANA8e1VIKd23c
“Next question,” I stated, hiding a wince.
406Please respect copyright.PENANADMENLmd1lV
“Well, I just have an observation. Something I just noticed. You must have amazing hearing if you heard me talking to Jackson about Lydia. Also, Stiles and I only picked up five pencils. If you had normal hearing, you would have heard the notebooks..”

Before I could answer the bell rang. I was still recovering from the last one. I clapped my hands over my ears and squeezed my eyes shut as the ringing filled my head. Then finally the sound stopped, leaving me with a dull headache. Laura noticed and started nodding.

“Ok, well my aunt is going to pick us up next to the cafeteria. She says that it's faster than going to the front of the school.” She grabbed her bag of goldfish, threw her phone in her backpack, and walked out of the room.

The rest of the school day was rather uneventful. Each class was boring and homework was assigned from each of them. Every time the bell rang my headache just kept getting worse. It didn’t seem to affect anyone else so I just tried to act normal. I was glad that I didn't have to answer Laura’s questions. The less that anyone knew about me the better. I wished that I was done socializing for today but the final bell rang and that meant I was off to the cafeteria. I had to work on this project and I just hoped it wouldn’t be too bad. However, I’d heard that Laura’s sister had a group of her own which consisted of Jackson, Stiles, Scott, and Lydia. My headache seemed to get worse just thinking about it. Finally, I got my thoughts to stop barraging me as I made my way outside, to the cafeteria.
