The bell rings, signaling the beginning of class. All the students were already in class, except for one.

I put my hands over my ears to block out the ringing. It was so loud. Once the ringing finally stopped, I started running towards my first class. My backpack, hitting my shoulders and back as I did. It kept weighing me down as I ran. I don’t know why I bothered to run, I was already late. I made it to the door and took a minute to catch my breath. Before I could talk myself out of it, I just impulsively knocked on the door. An older woman, in a dark brown pencil skirt, answers the door. I instantly brush the hair out of my face as she welcomes me into the classroom. I was immediately filled with dread, as all the eyes in the classroom turned to me. However, I kept my face from showing my embarrassment and acted like I knew what I was doing.

“Ehmmm, is there something I can help you with?” Her voice was chirpy and shrill. Almost- as bad as nails on a chalkboard.

“I’m a new student here, and this is my first class….” I trailed off, slightly confused.

“Oh- right then. Please find an open seat.” She said as she sat down in her chair.

“You must be……” She squinted her eyes as she looked at the sticky note on her old-fashioned computer.

“Sydney. My name’s Sydney.” I told her as I scanned the room for an empty seat. I spotted the only open seat, in front of an attractive yet rude-looking boy. To the right of the seat was a pretty girl with brown hair and kind eyes. She gave me a small smile, but I wasn’t able to give on in return. I walked over and set my backpack beside the desk, then turned to sit down in the chair. As I am about to take a seat, I hear a slight snicker from behind me. I look to the left and see the brown-haired girl, eyes fill with terror. It was too late. When I sat down, there was no chair beneath me, so I fell, hitting my head on the desk behind me. The class gasped in shock.

“Mr. Whittemore to the principal, RIGHT NOW.” The teacher yelled sternly. The girl that I sat next to, helped me up. I had spotted a red sharpie on the floor, and I grabbed it as I got to my feet.

The brown-haired girl gets up instantly and maneuvers her way around the chair, and slightly-dented desk. Another boy from the back of the classroom stood up and helped her adjust the desk and chair back into its place.

“Are you alright?” she asked
“Jackson can be a real asshole sometimes.”

“Yeah, I’m fine,” I assured her. As I spoke, I noticed the boy, Jackson, get up and start making his way toward the door.

“Hey, Jackson,” I called as I took the cap off the sharpie. He swiveled around, his expression making it seem as if he couldn't care less.

“Next time, do something a bit more mature,” I told him, throwing the open sharpie with incredible precision. It soared through the air, and it hit its target.

The sharpie clattered to the ground, a red dot remained on Jackson’s forehead. The girl giggled, and I couldn’t help but smirk.

“Ms. Shmoore, you haven’t been in this class for even two minutes, and you have already received lunch detention.”

“He pulled my chair out from under me. I simply gave him something to remember the occasion by.” I told the teacher. I haven’t been around teachers in a while, so I didn’t really bite my tongue from retorting.

“Yeah, that isn’t fair, Mrs. Dane. Jackson should be receiving lunch detention, not her. She was just sticking up for herself, half of the people in this classroom wouldn’t have the guts to do that.”

“That's lunch detention for you too, Ms. Argent.” The girl let out a sigh as she leaned back against her chair. The girl next to her mouthed the words: Nice one. The two girls looked oddly similar, almost as if they could be sisters.

I sat down in my chair without another word. The first day and I was late, plus I had lunch detention. This girl had stuck up for her for some odd reason, and now she had lunch detention too. I let out a quiet sigh and just looked down at my desk, hoping this teacher would just continue with some lesson, so the attention was off me.

The woman stood up, and walked away from her desk, holding a blue filing separator that was labeled ‘Project’, in her hands.

“This project is going to be worth most of your grade. And I expect each-”
And then I was gone. I zoned out. I came back to when she was suddenly rattling off names. Apparently, they were in groups for this project. Welp, this is one of those times that I wish I was paying attention but wasn’t.

“Laura….” This was the girl that had helped her up after she had fallen. Mrs.Danes' voice trailed off as she scanned the room for another student.

“Stiles……” The girl's face turned a light shade of pink.

“And……. Let’s do Sydney.”

I was filled with pure dread for the second time today. I didn’t like being around other people. I didn’t want to deal with it. This girl next to her seemed nice, but anyone could seem nice. I didn’t even know this other person in their group. I just prayed that this project would be over rather quickly. Memories flashed through my mind and I quickly blocked them out. Thankfully, the bell rang, meaning this class was finally over. I covered my ears once again at the horrible ringing. I got to my feet, and I was out of the classroom before the majority had even gathered their things.
