Soooo maybe the next few chapters or so are gonna be angsty Danato (just cause). It’s not exactly relevant except for the first three stories (which are all gonna be song fics so yay) but the theme will be same. Danato is not a ship btw, they’re just friends.
——————————————————————
The hallway was empty, there wasn’t anyone around except for Dark and Kanato as the girl stayed back to get some stuff done in the library and Kanato had detention. The two had stopped talking, there wasn’t much thought to it; just a huge argument and then the friendship broke off from there. But...there still seemed to be some sort of tension between them, be it silent or loud.
Dark walked a few steps behind, her earphones plugged in, eyes closed as she walked straight into Kanato’s back. “Oh I’m sor...ry..” she trailed off, choking on her own words as she saw who she had bumped into. The taller clicked his tongue at her and turned to walk away, leaving the girl teary eyed and frustrated. She doesn’t know what came over her at that moment, but staring at his moving back she spoke,
Kanato stopped walking. He didn’t turn around to face her, but it was clear that he had stiffened, either in annoyance or fear she wasn’t sure. “Leave me alone Dark. I don’t want to talk to you.” His voice was level, only the slightest hesitation could be heard with the mention of her name. Yet, Dark persisted, continuing her lashing.“If that's how you really feel, then why'd you call last night?”
She inhaled deeply. It was true that the boy called her the night before. He was drunk and for some reason he had called her just to talk and continued to talk until it was a good amount passed midnight, leaving Dark pretty exhausted and unfocused today. She bit out the next words carefully.“You say all I ever do is just control your life”
Kanato still didn’t turn, but he twitched a bit at the mention of control. He had said it to Dark because that’s what she had did to him. They weren’t dating, but Dark was always trying to plan out what was ‘best’ for him and who he should stay away from. Why should I even care?! He thought bitterly, I should just walk away and then I never have to hear her stupid voice again. But how you gonna lie like that, how you gonna lie like that?
And with that, he began walking away again. Dark didn’t say anything, mind and body too tired to even fight back at this point. She put back her earphones in and walked faster in front of him, her hood pulled over her head and her hands gripping the straps of her backpack tightly.
Silence seemed to echo through the hallway walls and the hall seemed to become even longer as they continued to walk. Dark felt her eyes start to sting with tears, but she sucked it back in anyhow. She didn’t want to lose it here, of all places. She just didn’t understand what had really happened, and neither did Kanato as the words slipped from him before he could stop himself...“I don't regret it though, I learned from it”
This time; it was Dark who stopped in her tracks. Her earphones were in, but the music was quiet and not blasting. She didn’t turn around, and debated whether to continue walking or not. Deciding on staying, the younger didn’t move, just waiting as she took out her earphones again, slinging them over neck, waiting...“They should have you locked up for all the time you stole from us–”
Her lips moved on their own accord, trying to focus on what was happening, as her own mind seemed to move in a daze. Kanato cut her off with a harsh laugh. His deep voice slicing through her sentence,
“Took you out when I had no money”
Dark turned to face him, her hood pulled even lower to cover her eyes while they stared, watery at the boy’s shoes. She kept quiet, arms crossed as she continued to wait for him to finish what he had to say. Her heart ached and she didn’t really want to stay put, but if it helped him then she would do it. His next words broke her even more though. “Only person that you ever cared about was you, that's why it's so funny”
The girl was shy and timid, so she did not know how to really reply to such a comment. She knew for a fact it wasn’t true–she was someone who always tried to help those in need–, so she couldn’t even comprehend why he would say such a thing to her. She opened her mouth to say something but he promptly ignored her,“You want somebody that'll keep you warm at night, then tell me, why you actin' cold to me?”
“Me?? Acting cold?? YOU’RE the one that hasn’t been talking all this time!” She lashed out in frustration, it wasn’t possible that he thought she was acting cold when he was the one who LITERALLY just told her to ignore him right?! Right?! It was insane, it didn’t make any sense. Her eyes scaled up the boy’s lanky form, from his skinny legs all the way up his slim torso and arms to his eyes. Those pools of mercury which she once admired now held the emptiness of death and paleness of suffering. She couldn’t tell why he looked like that, but she didn’t really care in that moment.
His equally pale lips stretched into a thin line which showed no intent on replying to her statement, if he was going to play that way, then fine, she would as well. Gathering herself and her thoughts she went on.“You ain't the only one to blame, no583Please respect copyright.PENANArIsRXlH4Fq
I'm the one that made you rich when I bought every lie you sold to me”
Dark didn’t scream, nor did she really shout, but in her own words and her own ears she could hear her voice booming louder and louder, and she silently thanked anything and everything that they were alone in the entire school at the moment. “Dark..I–those weren’t li—“ “Yeah?” She hated him, how dare he sound so pitiful?! How dare he sound as if he were really sorry about things?? She didn’t understand why she was going so hysterical about it either, “Yeah. Well. I don’t believe you. I guess all those ‘You’re the only person I’d die for’ was all a lie huh?!” She was breathing heavily, chest heaving with the effort.
”It wasn’t.” Kanato’s tone was also breaking apart now, a tiny voice-crack at the end of his sentence giving him away. He didn’t know that Dark thought he was lying, he wasn’t lying. In fact he forgot that he had even said it, but now that she brought it up he knew he definitely wasn’t lying. He knew that Dark meant the world to him, even as a bestfriend she knew so much more about him that anyone else had even bothered to ask about. However what came out of his mouth was the exact opposite of what he wanted to tell her.“Yeah, heard you threw away the pictures583Please respect copyright.PENANAS8dcslBhZg
But you still got the memories of us, so I guess that don't really make a difference”
Dark stared at him. She didn’t think that the news of her even freaking deleting photos would’ve gone around and spread like a virus already. Her shock must’ve been portrayed evidently since he just ‘tched’ at her, “You really think I didn’t know? So many people came to me and told me how you were taking photos with them.” He sounded hurt, fearful almost. It didn’t take the Neko very long to realise that the Alpha was building up a wall of defence to keep her out again. But the pain that she herself was feeling won her over and she snapped back at him again.“Flippin' through 'em in my head”
The words were almost inaudible due to her mumbling, but Kanato caught it, and he faltered again, eyes widening slightly before returning back to their regular size. Other than that, he showed no other signs of even reacting in any way to what he had heard, the Omega noticed the quick-change, but chose not to mention it and continued, her voice returning back to its normal volume. “Got you texting me all hours any night”
Whenever the two would message, it was usually really late at night, when Kanato himself was drunk or high, Dark would be there–sober–, talking to him and pretending that everything was okay and he did actually care about her. She grew too attached too quickly, and that was why she felt so lost as soon as he had left. The reasons why she got so attached were like a blur to her after he started giving her the cold shoulder. She pressed on, “Yeah, you told me that you needed distance”
Kanato cut her off again, his voice becoming more uneven and angrier, “What's the deal with you?583Please respect copyright.PENANA2Ly2L4JSnV
You say you want a man that keeps it real”
This time Dark cut him off, shouting back at him as loud as she could, pain and frustration bubbling over her as she sobbed out, “Then why you mad when I get real with you?”
Kanato inhaled, trying to calm himself down before trying to reach out to grab at her shoulder, “GET AWAY FROM ME!” She shrieked in fear, the trauma already building back up in her. She was scared, she didn’t know what she did wrong, she helped him all she could and this is everything she got back in return?“You wanted someone to pay the bills for you”
Kanato spoke slowly, unsure of what he was saying himself. Dark had told him before, she wanted someone stable, and from that he figured someone who wasn’t an addict, someone who didn’t get off on just the slightest high and someone who wasn’t a heavy drinker...someone that wasn’t him. It hurt him, the sudden realisation that washed over him, and that was why he started avoiding her in the beginning. Dark screamed back at him, the heart-shattering hysteria back in her tone, “Went from feelin' you, now I feel for you, LIAR!”
Both parties paused, Kanato’s hand out-stretched and Dark’s hood off her head, falling from the violent surge of emotions that coursed through her as she swung her head to say what she had just admitted. Her hair was in a mess and her coral pink eyes were frenzied, specs of blue sprinkled in those emotion-ridden irises.
Tears flowed down her face as she turned on her heel to leave, she turned her head to look at the Parrot once more, eyes somehow transferring the same pain into his soul as he watched her cautiously. Neither moved, they just stood there watching each other before another stray tear escaped down Dark’s cheek. It splashed to the ground before melting away into the cracks between the off-white tiles. If that's how you really feel, then why'd you call last night?
Maybe he should call or text her later, make sure she was alright...no. That’s stupid. She probably didn’t want to see him right now let alone talk to him. Not after the stunt that just happened. A part of him wanted to wake up panting and sweaty, knowing that it was just some nightmare that never wanted to end. But the other parts of him knew that he had hurt her, but she had hurt him too. She just tried to delete him as if he wasn’t even an important part in her life. You say all I ever do is just control your life
His hands clenched and unclenched into fists and he noticed Dark’s sad eyes flicker into fear. Did she think he was going to hit her?? He wouldn’t! Would he..? No. He wouldn’t. That was a line he would NEVER cross, especially not to her. Dark meant a lot to him. She had to know it! ”Dark please—! Stay. I care about you, please.” He struggled to get the words out, and his heart shattered a tiny bit more when he saw another tear go down her cheek, before Dark’s shaky voice was no more than a whisper.“But how you gonna lie like that, how you gonna lie like that?”
~
About a week had passed and the Parrot managed to catch Dark alone in the library once more, he needed to speak to her. People were coming to him asking about why she was so sad, as they were so close and neither Laito nor Azusa knew what was going on. “DARK JUST LISTEN TO ME!” He screamed at her, watching the girl’s eyes widen and her whole frame beginning to tremble in fear. He ignored it.“Tellin' people that's how we been?583Please respect copyright.PENANAWfc6NK4Pkl
Tellin' everybody, yeah that we was barely speakin' “
He spat out, and watched as Dark began to calm down slowly, her fear toning itself down into a simmer again as she realised that the news had once again gotten back to Kanato, from Yuma onwards. She didn’t really see anything wrong with what she said, it was plain obvious that it was exactly what they were doing–barely speaking–. She stared at him, not noticing the emotions fading from her once lively eyes as she frowned up at him, “All this kinda funny, why'd you call me every day then?”
The laugh she gave was hollow and unwavering. She had noticed, all the missed calls that she got every day. Hell, even LIGHT got missed calls from him for God-knows-what reason, but it always ended in Light shouting and hanging up. She began to tune it out too as she just didn’t pick up her phone to many others including him. “It's immaturity, you goin' off the deep end583Please respect copyright.PENANA0SV9bdF9Az
You just want somebody you can chill and get some drinks with, cool”
She pushed on, her voice still empty yet filled with longing to reach out and pull him into a hug. Pushing the feeling down she looked up at the silent boy, face uglily illuminated by the dim lights of the low-budget library. When he still didn’t speak, a sad smile laced her lips, showing a brief moment of emotion in a long time of nonchalance.“Then don't hit me on the weekend, tellin' me 583Please respect copyright.PENANAgLMbOk5wnw
You missed the way we talked and how I listen, yeah”
It was soft, almost hopeful that they could go back to what they were before, something that was free and happy, not whatever just happened over the course of a month. Her eyes also appeared to soften, sadness flowing into them along with pain and sorrow. ‘Why you playin' with my mind, huh?’
Kanato thought.“Why you playin' with my time, huh?”
Kanato said.“Told me we should let it go and put it all behind us583Please respect copyright.PENANAsb0A1QHxyi
That's what I did, now you askin' me what I done, I was583Please respect copyright.PENANAYbMDpXBVz4
Waitin' for this day, I saw it comin' “
Dark shrugged, not really caring about the whole ordeal, even though her heart was dusting away in the process. They were best-friends! How did this even happen, was beyond her. Her mouth dropped again, the sorrow getting to her as she tried to push away whatever anxiety and trauma was coming back to her. “I think you just like attention, tryna tell me all your problems583Please respect copyright.PENANA7Ls46HDibv
I got issues of my own, I ain't got time for all this drama”
Kanato couldn’t help it. He was desperate to make her feel something, anything! He couldn’t imagine the caring Dark that people needed morphed into someone who won’t be able to even sympathise with them. Luckily, his approach worked, but not in the way he thought. Dark launched back out at him, frustration flooding her face and body, “I OPENED UP TO YOU BECAUSE YOU ASKED ME TO! YOU JERK!” And with that she pushed him out of the way with that little amount of strength she possessed.
Too stunned to do anything, the boy let himself be shoved to the side, nearly tripping and falling over from the suddenness of her outburst. You told me that you don't really wanna talk, then why you callin', huh?
She opened up to him because he asked her to..? Memories of conversations flooded his mind instantly. ‘If you want me to help you, you have to tell me the truth about what’s wrong..’ Oh God what did he do. Kanato let himself cry, it was only him here after all...right...?
....Wrong. Dark had actually just backed up against the wall outside the library, her own eyes pouring out tears of confusion and hurt. She trusted him! She opened up because she trusted he wanted to hear it! And now here he GLADLY GOES TELLING HER ALLLLL ABOUT HOW SHE’S ONLY THINKING ABOUT HERSELF AND HOW SHE’S LOOKING FOR ATTENTION! If that's how you really feel, then why'd you call last night?
Both pairs of eyes burned with stinging tears like acid as they fell hot to the floor. Trauma filled Dark’s mind as Kanato’s words stitched themselves into her mind, shining out into her eyes and heart, causing her to clutch her chest and forehead in physical pain. She cried out, and then bolted for it.You say all I ever do is just control your life
Slamming her room door shut, she cowered under the covers in fear. Her whole stature trembled and shook violently, as her eyes grew red and swollen from crying, thoughts crowding her mind:But how you gonna lie like that, how you gonna lie like that?
”YOU ONLY THINK ABOUT YOURSELF!”
”NO ONE CARES ABOUT WHAT YOU HAVE TO SAY!”Baby how you gonna lie, how you gonna lie like that?
”ATTENTION SEEKER!”How you gonna lie, baby, how you gonna lie like that?
Kanato was favouring no better, he went back to his dorm and his room, sitting in his desk chair, just staring out at nothing, he felt numb. Cold. He didn’t mean for what he said to come out that blandly. It was only meant to get a rise out of Dark and make her get back some sort of feelings. No, no, how you gonna lie like that?
But right now; at this point in time, he had just heard her scream, garbled with anxiety and pain and even saw her grabbing roughly at her chest and head. He was worried she was going to get a heart attack, but when she ran off he realised that he had let her go again.
He continued staring, the world around him slowly turning to static except for that one spot on the wall that he was looking at. His own emotions starting to fade away and the colour in him starting to wash out completely.“If that's how you really feel, then why'd you call last night?”
He whispered to himself, repeating his best-friends last few words to him over and over until it became a mantra. You say all I ever do is just control your life
The world was dead to him. But how you gonna lie like that, how you gonna lie like that?
She didn’t know what to do.
He couldn’t begin to comprehend how badly he hurt her.Tell me how you 'bout to lie like that
They didn’t know how they would continue to face each other after this.
