It's the last day of training which means she has to be the best of the best by the end or else he family, and her will get it.
No pressure.
Her body is tingling with nervous energy. She hops back and forth staring at nothing. What if I can't do it? What if something goes wrong? The thoughts course through her brain like hot iron. She only wishes it were iron, it would be less painful.
"I can feel your nervousness from here." Says a voice. Ethan.
She whips around and glares at him. "Of course, I would be nervous! My whole family depends on me. So you better help me train."
He laughs to himself. "Of course, Nys. That's what I came here to do."
She blinks. "Did you just cut my name in half?"
"You have a problem with that, Nys."
"Let's just train." With that and a scowl, they get started.
-------
"Oh my goodness..." she says, sweat burning her eyes. "Why..." She gasps for breath "Why did we have to do that?"
And by that, she meant running about 127 miles or what felt like it.
"We had to test your endurance which is very impressive." He says, looking at her with those piercing green eyes.
"Gee, thanks." She rolls her eyes "I'm glad putting me through pain and suffering helped you figure that out."
The corners of his lips quirk up but he represses the smile. At least now Nyssa knows he's capable of humor.
"What's next?" She asks, straightening.
"You know everything you need to know. Now you need rest. You need to be alert and awake. No matter how good you are you're useless if you're tired."
She opens her mouth to protest then realizes he's right. She sighs and nods.
"Huh, I expected you to argue."
"I thought about it but the call of my bed was too strong." She says squinting at him. "Do you always think me to be disobedient?"
"Yes, you got into this didn't you?"
"No, I got into this because I love my family. And I know that it would be better if I got in trouble instead of my dad." She snaps.
He eyes her for a second before finally speaking. "Just go get some rest." And with that, he's gone.
She blinks a few times and starts the walk home. Who did he think he was? Giving her commands, she scoffs.
Who was she? She thinks as she realizes she was following those commands. She frowns and kicks a rock, sending it flying and hitting a wooden pole. It makes a small thump and falls to the ground with another. She stops for a moment then keeps walking.181Please respect copyright.PENANAp38Sr0ivqL
Nyssa then feels something wet on her arm. She looks over and sees a raindrop and then another joins it. Eventually, she's cold, soaked, and exhausted. Her clothes cling to her body and her hair is in black, wet clumps. She opens the door to her house and walks in, taking off her shoes at the door.
"Nyssa!" Her little sister comes bounding over, ready to give her a hug but stops at the last second. "Your so wet!" 181Please respect copyright.PENANA6BfuWJbrHO
Their dad walks over. "Go! Go upstairs. You're getting water all over and I just cleaned!" He says and Nyssa laughs and shakes her head, spraying water all over before running up the stairs. She hears Flora laughing and her dad grumbling.
Once she's in her flannel pajamas she lays on her bed staring up at the ceiling and smiles.
