"Does my hair look okay?"
"You look fine, Jonah."
"Does my breath smell okay?"
"Yeah, for now."
"What's that supposed to mean?"
"I'm just saying depending on what you brought for lunch."
"Oh. True...Well, what should I say when I run into him?"
"I dunno. Just...say hi I guess."
I sighed. We were on our way to the lunch room. Study Hall ended and now this is my chance to officially meet the boy - I mean, Cyr. I sighed.
"Cyr...his name sounds so...so..."
"Cute?" Jaime finished my sentence."
I nodded while my cheeks flushed red.
Jaime smiled. "You're so cute when you're squirming. Ah, we're here."
We both stopped at the entrance of the cafeteria. The cafeteria was buzzing with noise from kids talking. You know how some kids say that lunch is their favorite period of the day? Well, not for me. I mean, sure, it's nice to take a break from working on class assignments and just relax and eat your food with your friends but the cafeteria is practically a death trap for me. Why? Because there could be times where I might trip and fall or someone else's food lands in my hair and on my shirt. This is why i'm not too happy to meet Cyr at lunch.
"Are you coming in or not? We have to find a good seat." Jaime said.
I nodded and followed her in. I think the cafeteria is the most dirtiest place in the whole school. Or in any school. You have kids making a mess at their tables, there are cockroaches all in the trash cans and in the kitchen, it's just...utter chaos. And not only that but the food is horrible. This is why ever since sixth grade, I always brought lunch from home. Even if one day, we only have bread and baloney, I would still bring it and prefer to eat that than cafeteria food. You never know when there's lunch lady hair in your pasta or you bought uncooked hot dogs. And that ladies and gentlemen, is my rant for the day.
"Since you have a lunchbox, you get to save us a table." Jaime said.
I nodded.
"Here, take my things. I'll be right back okay?"
I nodded again and took Jaime's bookbag and sketchbook then looked around the enormous cafeteria for an empty table. I saw a good one by the windows but it had trash on it. I looked around some more for another table but couldn't see one so I guess the trashy table by the windows will have to do.
I started to make my way over to the table and when I got there, I set my and Jaime's stuff down in the chairs then I carefully picked up the dirty trash and took it to the nearest trash can. I shuddered at the thought of just touching the dirty trash. Now that the table is semi-clean, I sat down in a chair and grabbed my lunch box. I set it down on the table in front of me and opened it up. Ramen Noodles with pieces of Chicken, a large double Fudge Chocolate Chip Cookie and Fruit Juice in a bottle. It's nice to know that while everybody else gets to eat nasty cafeteria food, I get to dine on delicious food from home. Made especially by my wonderful mother.
I looked over to the cafeteria line and saw Jaime. It looked like she was talking to someone. Then I realized that the person she's talking to is Cyr. I felt my heart starting to beat faster. I really hope that I don't lose my appetite. I took a couple deep breaths then opened up my juice and took a sip of it to calm myself down. I started to feel a little bit better when I saw that Jaime and Cyr was heading over to me. I quickly tried to fix my hair even though I wasn't sure if it was messed up or anything then I checked my breath.
"Hey, Jonah." I heard Jaime say.
I smiled softly as I looked up at her.
"Jonah, this is Cyr. Cyr, this is Jonah." Jaime introduced.
"Hey, you ride my bus and you're in my first period." Cyr said.
I smiled awkwardly and nodded.
I watched as Jaime sit across from me and Cyr sat right next to me. I watched them start to dig into their foods. I wasn't sure if I should come up with a conversation with Cyr or just eat. I just stared at the food in my lunchbox.
"Cyr, Jonah is the friend I was telling you about in second period." Jaime said as she broke the silence.
"Really?" Cyr looked at me. "That's cool."
I slowly nodded, not saying anything.
"Jonah is a huge geek. He is obsessed with Harry Potter and Star Wars." Jaime continued.
"Really? That's awesome. I love Harry Potter. My grandfather is a huge Star Wards geek too."
I decided it was too rude to not look at Cyr when he's talking to me so I took the bait and looked at him. I kinda wish I didn't because he looked even more cuter up close than far away. I couldn't take my eyes off his beautiful green eyes and gorgeous face. Then, he smiled at me. He actually smiled at me!
I smiled nervously and looked away.
"Hey, you're not eating?" Cyr asked.
"O-oh...I am...i'm just..." I shrugged then started to dig into my food.
"Maybe we can...talk about Harry Potter sometime? I own all the books." Cyr said.
I stopped eating and looked at him. What is this? Is he asking me out? No. He can't be. He's just asking me to talk about Harry Potter with him. That's definitely not a date.
I swallowed the food in my mouth and nodded with a smile. "S-sure. I'd love to..."
Cyr then smiled brightly at me and I felt like I just died.
***
I was kinda glad when lunch ended because I was just so super nervous being around Cyr and talking to him. But then, I realized that Cyr has next period with me and Jaime. It's like an endless cycle of being nervous around him. I'm just glad that this time, I didn't throw on or talked about something embarrassing.
"Since we all have the same class next, let's walk there together." Jaime suggested.
"Sounds good to me. What about you, Jonah?"
I gathered my trash and messenger bag then stood up with Jaime and Cyr. I looked at him and nodded.
"Sure."
The three of us walked out of the cafeteria after we threw our trash away. That's when a thought occurred. I completely forgot to text Cody. That's skulls&crossbones' real name. I looked at the time on my watch. It was pretty much too late now. I sighed.
"Hey, what's wrong?" Jaime asked me.
I looked up from my watch to see her and Cyr watching me.
"Oh...it's just...I forgot to text Cody."
"Who's Cody?"
"Nobody!" I quickly said. "I-I mean."
To be honest, I thought that me and Cody had a thing until Cyr came into my life and now I feel like i'm cheating on Cody even though we're not dating.
"Cody is just this friend we know." Jaime said.
Cyr nodded.
I sighed in relief. "C'mon, we're going to be late if we don't get a move on." Jaime said then started to walk away.
I started to walk side by side with Cyr again.
"So, is Cody your boyfriend or something?"
I gasped and stared at Cyr.
Cyr looked at me and chuckled.
"Look, if you're into guys, that's not a problem with me."
I sighed in relief again. But wait, does that mean Cyr isn't....? I can't possibly ask him.
"No. He's just a friend."
Cyr nodded then looked at me and smiled again. I looked at him and smiled back. For the first time since we've met, i'm starting to feel more comfortable around him.
