Treyton and everyone were in the room where Maeve was held. She was still unconscious, and Treyton became worried. Aidoneus noticed his Father's worry. "Don't worry, Pops. She will wake up."
"I know son, but what I'm more worried about when she wakes up. Maeve will be distraught. I can't stand seeing her in pain."
"Understandable, but like I said, we all need to be there to support her."
Patrisha and Persefone sat beside each other; Patrisha held Maeve's hand. Tears dripped from her eyes. When hearing the news about Laoise having cancer, she was in total shock. Patrisha had known Laoise for many years, and there wasn't any indication that Laoise was ill. Guilt slowly overcame her. "If I have noticed something sooner, then maybe-" Her thoughts were interrupted when Maeve slowly woke up.
Everyone became alert and prepared for what was to come. Treyton immediately went to Maeve's side. "Maeve?"
The young woman let out a groan as she slowly opened her groggy eyes. Her eyesight was blurry, but when she heard Treyton call to her, she turned to him, and her sight slowly became normal. Looking at her surroundings, Maeve realized she was still in the hospital. Memories slowly flooded her; Maeve remembered her Mother's condition. "M-Mom!? Where is my Mom!?"
Everyone was silent; Patrisha wiped her tears away. "She's resting, hun. The doctor and nurses left strict instructions about her not getting visitors since they need to run more tests." It was a lie, and Patrisha hated herself for it.
Persefone tried hard to contain a cry. It hurt to see her friend in such a state.
"Mom...has cancer. Cancer."
Treyton bit his lower lip; he wanted to give Maeve hope that her Mother could be cured. "Maeve, we're all here for you. I-"
"Everything the doctor said was a blur. Please tell me everything, Treyton." The Alpha looked at the women. Patrisha slowly nodded. He didn't want to tell his mate in her current state, but he feared Maeve might do something rash. Treyton told her everything the doctor told him. Maeve was quiet, but tears slowly ran down her eyes.
"So...my Mom said she doesn't want treatment, but I can try to talk her out of it! There is some hope!"
Patrisha immediately stood and sat beside Maeve. "You're right, Maeve. There can be hope, but right now. Your Mom needs rest, and once she wakes up, you can come by and visit her."
"Can I go see her before I go home?"
The older woman was about to try to talk her out of it, but Treyton beat her. "You can see her momentarily, but only for ten minutes. Afterward, I will take you home."
Maeve nodded, and with Treyton's help, she got out of bed. "Pops, Persefone and I will get some takeout. Can you give me the address to the house?"
Persefone stood beside Aidoneus. "Don't worry. I know the way to her house. I will give you the address once we get the food." The werewolf nodded as he and his mate left the room, leaving the couple and Patrisha alone. The trio walked toward Laoise's room. The door was shut, and a nurse was inside, writing notes.
The nurse stopped writing her notes when she heard the door open. She looked at the trio. "Sorry, we cannot have visitors. We-"
"We understand, but that is my girlfriend's Mother. She just wants to say her goodbyes before heading home. We will be out within ten minutes," said Treyton.
The nurse was about to speak out, but Patrisha stepped forward, annoyed. "Girl, let my friend here say goodbye to her ma, or I can cause drama. Only ten minutes."
"F-Fine. Please finish by that time before the doctor sees." The nurse walked out of the room, leaving the trio.
"Th-Thanks, Trish," said Maeve.
"No problem. Now have your time with your ma."
The young woman walked toward the bed where Laoise lay. Laoise was still unconscious with so many machines connected to her arms and mouth. It hurt Maeve to see her Mother in such a state. Tears formed and dripped from her eyes; she lowered herself and kissed Laoise on the forehead. "Mom, I don't have much time to be here with you. I have so many questions. You should have told me that you had cancer so we could go through this together." Maeve wiped her tears away. "You can't give up, Mom. I will be here for you all the way. I love you." She kissed her Mother's forehead again and turned to the others. "I'm ready. Let's go."
Treyton put his hands on her shoulders as he walked beside her. Patrisha watched, but when the couple left the room, she looked behind her to see Laoise. "Please wake up soon. Be strong." The older woman also left the room and caught up to the couple.
Treyton led the women to his car, where he drove away from the hospital. He eventually reached Maeve's house, where he parked his car. Everyone was silent on the way until their arrival. Maeve looked down; Treyton noticed her eyes were emotionless. "Maeve, we're here."
The young woman nodded as she opened the car door and slowly exited. Patrisha and Treyton did the same, standing beside Maeve to ensure she would faint again. Maeve struggled to get her keys, but Patrisha got them and opened the door; everyone entered. Treyton led Maeve to her room, where she motioned to the bed. "Get some rest, Maeve. Aidoneus and Persefone will be back with some food. You need to eat something to gather your strength."
Maeve wasn't hungry but didn't have the strength to argue; she merely nodded. Treyton watched as his mate lay on her bed; her back faced him. He wanted to take her pain away, but he swore to himself to be by her side. "I will be in the living room." Treyton closed the door behind him, and that was when he heard Maeve's crying muffles.
It was very heartbreaking.
