Maybelle Jefferson: Born May 15, 1796, A proud and caring woman who despite her hardships and pain never let them define her. Worked as a housegirl/maid almost all her life. Settled down in Natchez, Mississippi not long after the Civil War ended. She migrated from Fairhaven, Virginia with many of the newly freed slaves. She wanted to forget the past in Fairhaven, Virginia, and the loss of a beloved family that once owned her. She saved money throughout her life so that she could retire in relative comfort.
Matilda Brown: Born January 11, 1848, A young vociferous 22-year-old who is a maid herself for a rich family befriended Maybelle, and lives in an apartment above Maybelle. She helps with chores or anything Maybelle needs.
Thomas Johnson - June, 14th 1790 He was originally from Jonesborough, Tennessee. He was the son of a sharecropper. His father George Johnson was a severe alcoholic and many times he would drink his wages in whiskey many times the family would have to steal from neighbors and Thomas was subject to his father's rage when drinking. So Thomas ran away at 10 years old and lived on what he stole and took shelter wherever he could. He made his way to North Carolina in his early 20s and had many odd jobs before landing on slave chasing.
2. Benjamin Thompson- September 12th 1789. Not much is known about his early, but he was born in Edenton, North Carolina. He was an unsuccessful farmer and the town drunk, he was also a shipbuilder for a short time before falling into slave chasing.
