Kaitlyn and her cousin, Rosetta, ran through the kitchen in a spontaneous game of tag. They were the only children who were most familiar with the house and didn't hesitate to create a ruckus.
They were having a party to celebrate Kaitlyn's father coming home from his eighteen-month deployment. Family and friends all gathered at Kaitlyn's home for the celebrations. While Kaitlyn's mother, Rhea, met their guests, Rosetta's mother, Carol, was in the kitchen helping put together the refreshments.
When the children's screams became too unbearable for quiet conversation, Rhea shooed them out to the backyard. There, they played happily with the swing set and doll house. But children will always tire themselves out quickly among their friends.
Knowing her mother was in the kitchen, Rosetta ran inside and asked for refreshments. Carol gave her daughter a glass of juice to quench her thirst. Once Rosetta calmed down, Carol gave her a basket with glasses for the other children still out in the yard.
Rosetta handed out the drinks as her mother directed and returned the empty basket to the kitchen. No sooner than Kaitlyn finished her glass, she collapsed with violent seizures. The other children ran to their parents, screaming in fear.
Kaitlyn was rushed to the hospital, where the doctors ran every test they could, but they still couldn't diagnose what was wrong with her. She was dying, but there was no trace of what was killing her.
For one week, Kaitlyn was in the hospital between life and death. Her family visited for several hours a day. In desperation, Rhea pulled Rosetta aside and asked what had happened before Kaitlyn fell sick.
"You must know something!"
"Mommy said it was a special juice only for Kaitlyn." Rosetta said softly.
