It was Saturday morning, and Alexandria woke up. She looked at her phone, and it was 7 a.m. The young woman then slowly sat up, opened the curtains, and looked outside; it was cloudy, and she realized it would rain. "Perfect day. I might as well study and do my homework in the library." Alexandria changed from her pajamas into blue jeans, a plain white shirt, a black jacket, and black shoes. She felt fortunate to live in the university dorms; it allowed her freedom and independence from her overbearing parents.
Alexandria did get along with her parents, but they always tried to dictate what was good for her. Yale was an excellent opportunity to escape control and do what she wanted. Throughout her years at Yale, she faced many challenges due to class difficulties, demanding professors, and classmates. Even with all that, she refused to be deterred. The young woman got her backpack and left her dorm room, where she could hear some men and women snoring. She knew that many of her dorm mates went out partying. Alexandria would always get invited, but she would refuse due to not wanting to stray away from her studies.
The dorms were ten minutes from the university; she decided to walk to enjoy the cold and clear her head. When she got to the university, the gates were open. There were many tour groups and some university students on campus grounds. However, it wasn't as busy during the week, which suited the young woman. While walking to the farthest building of the university, she noticed that a man was looking around and then at a piece of paper. Alexandria thought the man looked lost; she went to him. "Hey there, are you lost?"
When the man turned to see her, Alexandria's eyes widened. She felt her heart flutter and almost skip a beat. The man was well over six feet tall and looked like a model; he wore a long black coat with a black buttoned shirt beneath, dark gray slacks, and black dressy shoes. He had short but well-brushed dark blonde hair and a nicely trimmed sark blonde beard that matched his broad face. His eyes were hazel, but his beautiful smile made him stand out to Alexandria. She felt that his smile alone could make any woman melt. "Yeah, I guess you can say that. I'm supposed to have an interview with the law department. I haven't been in this campus since I graduated."
"O-Oh! You're an alumni here?"
"Sure am. By the way I'm Richard Hart," he said while extending his hand.
Alexandria tried not to blush, but she held his hand; they shook. "I'm Alexandria Graham, it's nice to meet you. I'm a student here."
"So you have Saturday classes?"
"N-No. I just came here to study a bit and do some homework to do what I want later in the day. Anyway, I can show you the law department, if you like. I'm actually studying law."
Richard smiled and sighed in relief. "That would be appreciated."
Alexandria motioned him to follow her, and the two were quiet momentarily, but when they got up a couple of stairs, Alexandria couldn't help but look at him once in a while. "I-I know that it's none of my business but you said you had an interview?"
"I do. You see, I was a Professor at Johns Hopkins University but I found an opening to substitute for a Professor who is going to be out for two weeks due to an emergency."
"W-Wow. It's rare that a law Professor asks for that amount of time off. I wonder if it's any of my Professors. Sorry for asking, but would you happen to know who it is?"
"If I remember, his name is Elliot Landon."
Alexandria stopped walking, and Richard noticed her surprised look. "Are you okay, Alexandria?"
The young woman got out from her surprise. "S-Sorry, Professor Landon is one of my Professors. I'm just surprised that he is taking time off. It's not like him."
Richard shrugged. "Well, it's the information I have received. It sounds to me that your Professor is a responsible person."
"He is, but he is tough to deal with. I'll be honest, no one likes him. I doubt the department likes him either." Alexandria smiled. My classmates and I won't have to deal with him for a while. This is like a blessing." She then motioned Richard to keep on following her.
"Well, it seems this Professor is something else."
"You have no idea. Anyway, here we are. I hope the interview goes well for you."
Richard smiled as he looked at the young woman. He couldn't deny that Alexandria was beautiful and liked her personality. "Well, thank you for your help. Who knows, maybe we'll see each other again in the classroom." Richard entered the building while Alexandria continued to the library, feeling happy she could get a break from the most hated Professor.
