"What do you mean by stay...?" Norman repeats, quieter this time.
"Damn, Jade! You were too loud!" Ace crosses his arms.
"I heard you, not Jade."
"We... Uh, we have to stay here. With Halley, and Jessica..." Jade tells him.
"What do you mean?" He asks.
"We're uh... Moving."
His blue eyes widen with shock. "What!? Will I have to leave Emma, then?"
"I'm sorry... I have to." Her usually cold heterochromatic eyes, for once, have sympathy. Only sympathy.
"Actually, she doesn't. I have to," Ace mutters.
"I-"
Ace cuts Jade off. "You know, if you don't like it here, you can fricking leave and live an actually good life without me."
"We're leaving to go back in just a while to get things... I'm sorry..."
Tears sting Norman's eyes, thoughts run through his mind, and guilt for having to leave Emma and his other friends comes like a flood, but he's too tired to argue.
...
A hand takes the book in Emma's hands from her.
"Hey!" She yells, thinking that it's probably Ray picking on her. She turns around; it's not Ray who stole the book.
"You're back already, Norman?" She smiles at him, but he doesn't smile back at her for a while. "You alright?"
He suddenly smiles back at her, like a computer after stopping for a while, then going quicker than usual. "Sorry, I zoned out," he says, and hands her the book.
"Well, that was a mean greeting!" Emma pouts. "Why are you back soon?"
"I uh... I have to leave," he replies.
"Oh, bye... But could you tell me why you're back so early though?"
"I didn't mean I had to leave right now."
"What? Could you explain? You good? I'm so confused..."
He sits down on the bench Emma is sitting on. She flips through the chapters, trying to find the page she was reading before.
"We're leaving," he tells her once she found the page.
"Huh? Who do you mean by we? Us, as in me and you?" She asks. She couldn't imagine running away from everyone and everything she knew other than her boyfriend- Especially at her young age of fourteen.
He shakes his head sadly and seemingly looks to the ground. "No... Me, Jade, and Ace. We're... moving to the state Halley and the rest of their families live..."
Emma's eyes widen, and her mouth slightly opens. "Wait... Hold on..." She mutters. "You're leaving?" When she lifts her head back up, her expression looks as if she was holding back tears.
"It's not my choice... I'm sorry, Emma."
A tear fell, followed by many more. She feels a hand on her cheek, and she looks up to see Norman smiling at her, trying to hide the pain beneath his cheerful looking expression.
"Don't cry..." He tells her.
He'd always told her not to cry. When they first started dating, he said not to cry, even if it was because she was happy.
"Hey, I know you're happy, but don't cry!" He told her, holding her in a hug.
When they watched that movie, he told her not to cry.
"It's a sad movie, but don't cry," he said.
Only one time it wasn't in a way that was supposed to be comforting or kind.
"I don't want to look like a bad person. Stop the damn crying."
...She didn't want to relive a moment like that again... She didn't want to fight with him... Of course not. They hadn't fought since he woke up and forgot everything...
"What does that mean, though? If you leave, we have to..." She stops.
"Break up? I know, I don't want to either..."
"But I still love you!"
"Then let's make a promise!" He tells her.
"Okay... What is it?"
"I won't fall in love with anyone else in the next four years!"
"Four?"
"Yes, four. After four years, I'm coming back when I'm eighteen!"
Emma smiles. "Will you visit me?"
"Of course! But, you can't fall in love with anyone else either, okay?" He sounded like a child. Neither him or Emma cared.
"I won't, I promise..." She grabs his hands. "Even though we won't be a couple, we'll still love each other!" She exclaims, her face still wet with tears.
"Of course!"
They sit there in complete silence, not saying anything, not even looking at each other until Emma asks something.
"Norman, when are you going back after packing?" She asks.
"Uh... I think in a week, maybe." He replies.
"Only a week?" She pouts. "I wish it were longer."
"It could be longer."
"I hope it is," she tells him.
...
They hang out for almost the entire week. With friends or without them. One night, they both fell asleep on a bench while looking at stars.
Emma awoke to nothing other than being uncomfortable. I'm so uncomfortable... She thought. She felt something embracing her and she realized she was at the park, having fallen asleep on a bench with Norman.
"Hey, wake up," she says, her voice quiet. It's probably around two to maybe three, the time Jade would wake up. She internally panicked, thinking she had forgotten about school, but it was the summer, and she wouldn't. He doesn't wake up or even stir; Jade said he'd been a heavy sleeper, so she just sits on the bench, her hand on his arm- which is holding her tight.
"I love you," Emma mutters. "I wish you didn't have to leave, and this was just a prank or joke... Yeah, I'd be pretty mad, but I'd still obviously love you..."
Then a meteor, or shooting star, sped across the dark sky. She wished on it.
Please let this all just be an unfunny joke, the teenage girl wished, a tear forming in her eyes.
...
"What time is it...?" Norman mutters, completely oblivious to the fact that he'd fallen asleep on a bench. His eyes flicker open, blinded by the rising sun. He tries to move his arm to shield his eyes, but something is holding it. Not something, but someone. That someone being Emma.
"Well, good morning, Emma..." He greets. She'd fallen asleep.
She looks cold.
He carefully moves her hand from his arm and takes his cardigan off. He puts it over her and smiles warmly.
She's so cute...
"I wish I didn't have to leave you, Emma," he tells her. "I love you."
