Dead branches crunched under his feet as he stalked the forest, moonlight shining down on him. Dompy was on the hunt, looking for any scraps of food he could scavenge to bring back to the cave he called home.
A rustle of leaves to his right alerted him to a prey's presence, and he pounced to find a small rabbit shaking in fear, its nose twitching as it stared at Dompy with its wide, dark, eyes.
Dompy stared back at the rabbit, then backed away. It looked so tiny and scared. He thought of how the little ones would react if he brought back a tiny rabbit, something so small and innocent that he didn't have the heart to kill it.
Dompy ran off into the woods, his six feet tapping against the leaves as he looked for some mushrooms and other plants. He put any and all plants he found in his mouth, searching for the pouches on the insides of his cheeks to keep the food safe.
After a lot of gathering, Dompy wandered back to the cave, the only thing illuminating the dark corner being the light of the moon and stars.
A furry head looked up at Dompy, green eyes staring back at him. Darby. She shook her head a little, stretching two of her legs out in front of her before she stood up and walked over to Dompy. She nuzzled up to him, a small embrace that meant the world to him.
He used his tongue to take out the saved food from the pouches within his cheeks, then walked over to the three smaller ossums curled up next to each other, fast asleep. Dompy nudged them awake, then nodded to the food on the cave floor.
They sat up fast, their stingers wagging as they ran for the food, hungrily eating up mushrooms, berries, and herbs. Dompy watched them lovingly, as Darby took out a few pieces of food for them to share. He knew that it was probably selfish to take some for himself, but with times being the way they were, Dompy needed any small amount of food to keep going.
The humans were at it again. With their fire and sharp weapons, constantly hunting. Hunting for them. But Dompy wouldn't let that happen. He needed to keep his littles safe. For all of the ossums.
He had to protect everyone. 214Please respect copyright.PENANA8CIqIFa7Rw

As Dompy stood his ground, growling at the humans above him, he thought back to that night. It had only been a week ago, but now the humans had caught up to him. They held up torches, trying to poke at Dompy with their spears and swords.
Dompy's stinger stood up on end, ready to sting anyone with his dangerous venom. He had to protect the others from the humans. He had to keep them away from his family.
The humans shouted as one jabbed at Dompy's side, staining his white stripes green with his blood. Dompy roared, rearing back on his hind legs as the other four waved in the air, pain throbbing through his body.
Dompy ran at the nearest human, flicking his stinger up and stabbing the human in the chest with it. The human fell, his chest stained with his red blood.
The other humans yelled as some ran after Dompy.
He ran through the woods, the only light once again coming from the moon and stars. He had to protect his family and get away from these horrible humans. They would kill anything and everything in sight, constantly hunting until there was nothing left. It didn't matter to them how big or small the beast was, as long as it could run the humans would take it. 214Please respect copyright.PENANAuyB2SQn6TX
Dompy began to stumble, blood spilling out of his side as he felt faint. His vision began to blur, and he felt like he could no longer run. The shouts faded away as Dompy fell to the ground, green blood forming a puddle under his heavy body.
The last thing he saw was a human standing above him, holding a spear above his chest to deliver the final blow before he succumbed to the sweet relief of death.
This cruel, cruel, world had given him an early death. He would not be able to see his children grow or spend his final moments with his mate. Instead, the humans who had called him a monster had taken everything from him. 214Please respect copyright.PENANAdztkmPgVsb
They were the real monsters.
