“Please Abby? It’s only five minutes away from here, I’ll be safe.”
”No, you know the rules. No one leaves the house when mom and dad are gone unless it’s an emergency.”
”Ugh fine!” All I wanted to do was skate, I go there all the time with my friends. I’m thirteen! I can handle myself… I glanced at the window.
It’s crazy… but doable.
I grabbed my board, elbow pads and knee pads and shoved them in my backpack. The tree outside my window was a little far, but I could grab on to one of the branches. I scribbled a note and put it on my desk for when Abby indefinitely comes to check on me.
Using care to not make noise, I hoisted the window pane upwards as much as it would go, and felt the cold breeze of freedom.

If only I’d stayed home that day. If only I’d listened to Abby, I wouldn’t have gone down to the beach to look for shells after I skated.
I wouldn’t have noticed the tide retreating quicker than I’ve ever seen before. I wouldn’t have ran closer to the water. I wouldn’t hear the sirens too late to warn me. I wouldn’t have seen the wave, growing and moving towards me.
If only I stayed home, I wouldn’t be dead.
