There’s a certain kind of darkness, the one where your eyes can’t adjust to the lack of light so your imagination makes up for it.
Where every branch is a lurking beast and every shadow is a prelude to death.
The kind of darkness where nightmares come to life.
This night had that kind of darkness, as me and my friends made our way up to the cliff.
“Jay I don’t know if this is the best idea, it’s pretty dark out here…” I called with desperation to turn back, no one even knew where we were, our parents thought we were at a party.
”Oh come on Bea, don’t be such a scaredy-puss.” He shot back, leading the group forward while hopping over logs and kicking rocks.
I should’ve stayed behind… who wants to go see an old “haunted” house anyway. I sighed and trudged onward.
I hate to admit it but Jays laidback demeanor was calming me down-
AWWWOOOOOOooo…..
I jumped out of my skin. Wolves?!
“Jay?!”
”I heard em, they’re far away.”
”We could take em!”
”Shut up Sam.”
The group bounced the conversation back and forth as we went on, but my mind was elsewhere.
The howl was so eerie, so ghostly that it sent chills down my spine.
My train of thought was cut off as the house came into sight. It was as if death itself lived in the forgotten place of residence.
“Cool! Let’s go inside.” Jay and Sam lead the way through the crooked doorframe.
The pounding in my chest was so intense at this point I was surprised the rest of them didn’t hear it. The interior of the house was by far worse than the outside, if that was possible. There was old furniture coated in dust, and the floor was stained.
“Guys cmon, there’s stairs up this way!” Lucy pointed up a set of questionable steps leading upstairs. We all went up. There was no going back now, I had to stay with them or be left behind in the dark.
I worked on calming my ever growing nerves and anxiety about the whole situation, nothing has happened and it seems like nothing will.
I bravely stepped away from them to look out a window and laughed a little, almost in rebellion to my fear.
Something caught my eye, and all the fear came back as soon as it had left.
I stared in utter disbelief at what I saw out the window, a chill crawling up my spine. Farther up on the cliff, lit up by the moon and stars alone, a creature stood.
It was a wolf and a man all at once, antlers jutting out the top of it.
And it was coming this way.
”J-J-Jay… Sam… L-Lily, look.” My hand shook into a pointed position to show them the beast, almost on its own.
Jay paled immediately and let out a string of curse words. I wonder if it was fresh terror or he was just better at hiding it before.
The panic that followed calmed no one, we ran out of the house and down the cliff, back the way we came.
Or so we thought.
”Sam… Sam! Where’s your house?!” Panic made Jays voice higher.
“I-I don’t know! I thought we were going the right way, b-but…”
We were lost.
My breath left little clouds in the cold night air, all three of us breathing was the only sound in the stillness.
Three?
“Where’d Lily go. Jay, where is she?”
“I thought she was behind you…”
I swallowed hard. Almost perfectly on time, a blood curdling scream rang out, startling us all.
”Lily?! LILY!!” Jay looked around wildly before Sam clamped his hand over Jay’s mouth.
Shouting in a whisper Sam said, ”Shut up you blithering idiot!”
Tears were streaming down my face as well as Jay’s, no doubt because he’d just heard his sister scream for help and could do nothing about it.
Suddenly I felt the chill again.
“RUN!” I caught a glimpse of the scene before everything faded to black.
Jay and Sam saw the creature coming, and ran with everything they had. Hopefully I gave them time to get ahead.
There’s a certain kind of peace at death….
