How many times in one day can a girl faint? If you think twice, I have no way of answering that. I lost track after falling into the darkness.
"Oh, come on!" I shouted in the black fog around me, watching as it twisted and warped like water, except thicker, and colder. I felt the touch of icy fingers brush against my nape. Gooseflesh ran up my arms.
"The fly bumbles into the spider's nest..." a voice spoke. For a moment, I thought it was the shadows. Then I realized the shadows were gone. Assimilated back into my being, as it should've been from the start.
And gone. Forever.
I need to answer him, I realized. Rifling through every comeback I knew, I gave up.
"What are you?" I asked, feeling the darkness beginning to pull me in. I gasped, snatching my hands away from the shadows. An empty laugh arose from...everywhere, actually. All at once, a horrible, deep laugh echoed through the caverns of my vision.
My mind felt dizzy, and disoriented. A strange haze settled upon me. My knees shook. My stance wavered. What was this being? I held out my hands, grasping onto slivers of blackness that wriggled away in glee.
"You know what I am, Wanda," the voice replied, its tone a pitch higher and much more childish. "You've seen my mark. You've encountered my servants. And now, whatever you choose to do: be it flight or fight, it doesn't matter. I will find it, and I will sip your blood and taste your bones as I rip myself free of Chaos' shackles."
The haze began to clear. My eyes widened with panic as I felt a sharp pain in my ankle. Abaddon.
"What-what are you doing?!" I shouted, crumpling over in agony as my ankle swelled to a grotesque size. Strange lines of infection began to slither all across my body like serpents. I felt something beginning to crawl underneath my skin. Something alive.
I screamed as, with a sickening squelch, the true horror of this situation was revealed. A thousand spiders joyfully skittered out of the open wounds, turning back onto me with beady eyes.
All at once, they pounced. Crawling into my mouth, eyes, nose, and ears, they bit and scratched and clawed until there was nothing left. My blood turned grey with poison. My bones crumbled until they were nothing but dust. All the while, I felt his gaze on me.
It was only at the height of my pain, when my vocal cords had been stretched beyond their breaking point, and blood spewed from my mouth, that Abaddon left. With only a single warning as a parting gift.
"We are connected, Wanda. Whether you like it...or not."
