It felt like the world was falling around me. That night, I felt my lungs shrinking and the nightmare beginning. That's when Cal's face became clear in my view. He stood there, a panicked look on his face. He ran over and held my shoulders.

She sat there, gasping for air and all I did was watch. When I ran over, her body began jumping. My hands gently touched her head, telling her to stay calm. Tears dampened her pillow, but not once did she take her eyes off of me. I kissed her forehead and held her on the floor. Her breathing never got better. We sat there for an hour, just trying to get her to calm down.
When she nuzzled her head into my neck, I knew she was okay. I handed her a water bottle that she drank and threw across the room. I laughed, petting her head. She backed off of me, sitting in front of me. Our eyes staring into each other's. And just like that, she slapped me. The burning pain stayed on my face all night. I don't blame her, I deserved that.
"I. . .You! Cal you left. Why. . .You didn't...You didn't even tell me why or when." Her voice cracked as tears escaped her eyes. I pulled her in tightly, kissing the top of her head.
"I'm sorry. I know. I. . ." Should I tell her? Can I tell her? "My boss is. . He died. I had to deal with his family and all of the left over paperwork. I got your calls. Whenever I went to answer them . . .One of his kids would just come over to me and cry. I'm not good with that! I'm just. ...I'm sorry. I'm scared. I. I'm sorry." You start with one word and end with the other. I felt her hand touch my neck. I looked down to see her looking at me. Just like that, it was over. I knew it. She didn't move, and I didn't either. Whatever the hell is going on between us.. .It's done.

We lay in her bed, my hands around her waist. I can smell the green apple shampoo she made me buy after our second date. When I started using it, she would always give me a hug and then pull my head down so she could smell my hair. Sure, it sounds weird, but it was our thing.
"Where are they?" I asked, spooking her a little. She hesitated, clearing her throat.
"On my thighs." She knew what I was talking about. She knew I was curious. My hand gently slipped into her shorts, feeling the bandage wrapped around her leg. I pulled my hand out and squeezed her tightly, kissing her neck.
"I'm sorry." She said. I tried to speak, but she stopped me. "I wanted to be okay. I don't know why I thought that this would help. I thought about you and cried every time." Her hand rested onto mine and she played with my fingers. We fell asleep cuddling each other. I've never felt so happy in a long time.
