When the storm finally cleared, Adalene went above to see and help row The Bowen now that the wind had died down.
The sky was a fading gray, and The Bowen’s deck was slippery and wet from the rainstorm. Adalene didn’t mind it though, since she loved what the world looked like after a storm. The planet just seemed so alive after a good rain, and she’d often walk around her kingdom after a rainstorm to see it at work.
Worms would be going back underground, birds would come out, able to fly once again. The planet was teeming with life after a rainstorm.
The others joined her shortly after, although they were grumbling about the bad weather.
“Things just couldn’t get any worse,” Richard grumbled as he sat down on his wet seat.
As if in answer, there was a crash to Adalene’s right and a giant form burst out of the water.
A sea serpent.
“You had to say it, did you?” Peter yelled at Richard.
“Well-I didn’t think it would give us a giant sea serpent!” Richard yelled back.
“You always have to jinx things!”
Peter and Richard started fighting, Richard even standing up to physically fight Peter.
Peter got up as well, his fists ready for a fight.
“Richard!” Helen tried to steady him, holding his upper arm. Alice put a hand to Peter’s chest, trying to get him to sit down.
“Guys, we need to stop fighting,” Luke said, looking at the sea serpent that was still rising from the water, glaring down at them. “We need to stop that!” Luke pointed to the sea serpent as it dipped its head into the water, filling its mouth with water.
“Oh no,” Adalene whispered, then she shouted to the others, “It is a fractionnement de l'eau serpent! It will spit boiling water at us!”
“A what?” Alice asked.
“There’s more than one kind of sea serpent?” Richard exclaimed.
“No time to explain,” Adalene said, running below-deck to grab her weapons, when she returned she told them its weakness. “Its weakness is its neck. Ve need to hit it inside its neck.”
“How are we supposed to do that?” Peter asked.
“It vill be difficult, but right now ve need to get away from it before it scalds us to death!”
The sea serpent raised its head now, its mouth full of water. As it reared back to spit it at them, Luke shouted, “Everybody, get down!”
Everybody ducked, and when the serpent spat the water at them, it missed Richard by a few feet, destroying the railing next to him.
Richard’s eyes widened and he shouted, “I almost died!”
“You’ll be fine,” Luke said to him, then he turned to Adalene, “What’s the plan, Adalene?”
Adalene stared up at the beast, which was angry that it hadn’t killed Richard. It dipped its head back down in the water, filling its mouth once again.
She assessed every part of her plan, making sure everything would work.
“You distract it,” she ordered them, “I vill slay ze beast.”
“How will you do that?” Peter asked.
“Just let me do zis,” Adalene said, and she turned to the tallest mast and began to climb up the ladder. The others were doing their best to keep the serpent distracted, yelling and banging their weapons against the deck, keeping the serpent occupied.
Once Adalene had reached the top, she took the silver spear off her back and readied herself. She’d only have one shot at this.
The serpent spat out more water, missing Peter just barely and destroying another part of the railing. With its mouth still open but now empty of water, Adalene gripped the rope she was holding and swung herself off of the crow’s nest, launching herself towards the serpent.
At the last second, she let go, and let herself fall into the serpent’s mouth...
