Bukannya aku jahat, tapi matanya sering mengertip dan melirik ke arah lain. Apa dia ini pemalu? Rambut yang agak berantakan itu bahkan sangat tidak meyakinkan pula. Pluss, tubuhnya yang agak kurus. Maksudku… daripada terlihat seperti pria dewasa, ia malah terlihat seperti orang gagal. Pria yang bahkan nggak bisa mengurus dirinya sendiri!
Hari pertama aku memberinya arahan, Munekata-san adalah orang yang penurut dan nggak pernah menyanggah sedikitpun. Itu membuat jalan pelatihan lebih mudah, dan aku bisa segera menyerahi Munekata-san dengan satu tugas.

Hari kelima, perkembangannya terlihat cukup drastis. Secara teknis dasar – dasar sales perusahaan, Munekata-san cepat mengerti. Bahkan Munekata-san sudah dapat mendatangkan satu atau dua klien dalam tiga hari di kantor. Itu sungguh luar biasa bagi pemula.
Nah, aku pernah bertanya padanya apakah dirinya benar – benar belum pernah bekerja sebelumnya. Dia bilang belum dan melirik ke arah lain. Tapi tampaknya penilaianku di awal cukup meleset. Aku mulai meragukan kemampuanku sendiri.
“Ahahaha! itu… benar kok. Sa-saya sebelumnya menganggur tiga tahunan. Pekerjaan paruh waktu tidak saya hitung sebagai pengalaman sih. Lebih tepatnya… untuk biaya makan dan sewa apartemen,”
“Hm… meski anda bilang begitu…. Apartemen di daerah Edogawa kurang lebih masih sekitar 50ribu yen, loh! Tapi terus terang, anda pandai bernegosiasi, Munekata-san,”
Saat itu ia hanya diam saja tanpa memberitahu lebih lanjut dan senyum kecil seperti anak SD. Aku merasa… ia punya alasan lain.

Setelah sekitar sebulan…,
Aku mulai menyadari kekurangan Munekata-san. Ia hanya kurang percaya diri ketika berhadapan langsung dengan klien. Munekata-san sering kalah argumen saat diskusi, aku benar – benar memperhatikannya.
Apakah itu buruk? Nggak juga. Sebagai manajernya, aku tetap menilai Munekata-san lebih spesial karena kecekatannya bernegosiasi secara tertulis, walau tidak dengan face to face. Aku mulai merubah sikapku agar Munekata-san lebih disiplin. Sepertinya, mata paman tidak pernah salah dalam menilai orang.

Seiring berjalannya waktu, aku merasa sedikit bersalah padanya. Sampai aku bertanya – tanya pada diriku sendiri ketika menyuruhnya enyah dari hadapanku.
“Sekarang, saya minta anda harus berusaha memenangkan hati klien! Anda hanya perlu memimpin diskusi hingga akhir. Bila itu dilakukan dengan tekun dan sabar, saya yakin kontrak anda akan cair. Target adalah tanggung jawab, Munekata-san!”
“Sa-saya… mengerti. Saya akan berjuang lebih keras,”
(Apakah aku nggak terlalu kasar?) aku menanyakan jauh dalam diriku sendiri.
Aku terus terang merasa bersalah Aku seumur hidupku nggak pernah seketat itu. Tentu aku ingin Munekata-san lebih berkembang, tapi bagaimana caranya aku mengobrol dengannya?
Kenapa aku yang nggak punya pengalaman dengan pria harus menghadapi hal semacam ini? Apa tuhan memnbenciku?
Berjalan menuju bulan keempat Munekata-san bekerja…
Aku masih mengulangi sikapku padanya. Masih dingin dan kasar terlepas dari diriku sendiri yang sedikit menyesal.
Tiba – tiba…
Hal bertambah buruk ketika paman memanggilku lewat telepon. Yang berarti secara prosedur, itu adalah hal genting.
“Halo, paman? Ada apa?”
“Mitsue-kun, ada hal yang perlu kusampaikan padamu. Siang nanti aku akan ke tempatmu untuk mendiskusikan sesuatu, terima kasih.”
Paman langsung menutup sambungan teleponnya.
Aku yang duduk dihadapan komputer dengan tugas membludak, menaruh ponselku kembali di meja serasa ingin membanting. Bagaimana mungkin permasalahanku selalu tambah banyak?

Tibalah waktu jam makan siang. Aku terpaksa memundurkan atau menunda jadwal istirahatku. Kami berdiskusi banyak. Hal penting itu diantaranya terkait siapa saja pegawai sales yang performanya turun dan siapa saja pegawai sales yang terlibat dalam penggelapan dana perusahaan.
Kami membicarakan panjang lebar dan aku berusaha sebisa mungkin nggak membahas tentang penggelapan. Lagipula aku juga nggak mau berspekulasi.
Ngomong – ngomong, aku berusaha melindungi bawahanku, namun paman tetap bersikeras. Sehingga aku menyerahkan beberapa data nama pekerja sales yang performanya turun.
Tentu… Munekata-san tidak termasuk. Dan aku yakin paman juga memahami hal itu.
Kemudian secara tidak sengaja ketika hendak keluar…, aku hampir menabrak Munekata-san.
Seperti biasanya ia selalu berkata sopan dan ramah. Dia orang yang terlugu yang penah kutemui. Mungkin ia mendengar beberapa percakapan kami tadi. Secepat mungkin aku pergi sebelum ia menanyakan hal yang merepotkan.

Setelah itu sampai malamnya, aku tanpa jeda disibukkan pekerjaan. Menutupi kesalahan bawahanku sudah boleh kuanggap kutukan. Seolah aku seperti payung yang dihujani hujan asam setiap harinya.
Mungkin aku berpikir untuk menyerah saja? Tapi bagaimana dengan Munekata-san?
Sejak bertemu dengannya Munekata-san selalu mengkhawatirkan keadaanku. Seperti…,
“K-kashiwagi-san…, apakah ada yang bisa saya bantu?”
“Anda pulang malam lagi,. Kashiwagi-san?”
Atau…
“A-anda baik – baik saja? Ka-kalau tidak keberatan… saya mungkin akan berguna,”
Nggak ada salahnya sih. Tapi di berbagai kondisi dan situasi moodku kadang itu terdengar risih dan menyebalkan. Namun setelah menolaknya, selalu timbul rasa penyesalan. Khawatir kalau aku memang sebenarnya butuh bantuannya atau hal lain.
Munekata-san juga sering pulang malam. Aku nggak mengerti apakah itu alasannya pulang malam karena menungguku? Tapi ketika kuperhatikan dari tempat dudukku, ia selalu berusaha menutupi target pencapaian sales. Bahkan malam itu, ia sedang menghadapi bos terakhir. Berdiskusi dengan Enomoto-san.
Melihatnya berusaha keras membuatku termotivasi terus untuk membantunya. Enomoto-san adalah klien yang kekeh dan teguh dengan pendiriannya.
Aku pernah menghabiskan waktu seminggu berdiskusi dengajn Enomoto-san, tapi berujung gagal. Bila kamu bertanya mengapa kami berusaha keras? Nah, itu karena kami ingin membuka potensi penjualan di wilayah Okinawa. Dan Enomoto-san, punya toko cukup besar bertempat di tengah jalanan yang sering dilewati turis domestik atau luar negeri di Okinawa.
Dengan begitulah aku tetap melanjutkan pekerjaanku. Mungkin sampai jam 10 malam? Atau 11 malam? Entahlah, aku bahkan mungkin lupa makan siang?

Hatiku kembali merasa tak enak meninggalkan Kashiwagi-san yang tampaknya kesusahan.

Perutku tiba – tiba berbunyi trombone. Apa karena ini pikiranku nggak karuan? Aku segera masuk ke lift dan memencot tombol angka satu.
Setelah itu, aku melakukan absensi keluar fingerprint, kemudian lekas menuju kedai soba dekat apartemenku. Aku hanya berjalan memutar ke belakang, lalu lurus hingga menuju tiga pertigaan, kurang lebih sejauh 1,5 km.
“Konbanwa~ Yoichibei-san, satu mangkok soba dengan udang goreng, tolong pesan!”
“Ah, seperti biasanya, siap!”
Kedai milik Yoichibei-san kecil dengan hiasan gantung spanduk merah berbentuk persegi panjang dua belas buah bertuliskan “Shiawase” yang berarti kebahagiaan dan dua lampion gantung merah oranye yang eksotis. Aku selalu merasa nyaman bila di sini, sobanya pun dibuat dengan cara tradisional.
Saat duduk di kursi kayu panjang tanpa sandaran, tiba – tiba aku tersadar bila ternyata orang lain mencuri startku. Masutaro Yamashita tengah menikmati soba dan terlihat bertumbuk dua mangkuk. Sedangkan di hadapanya telah ada semangkok penuh lagi.
“Konbanwa~ Yamashita-san…,”
“Ah, Munekata-san, silahkan…,”
Kami mengobrol santai.
“Yah… mau bagaimana lagi, uahahaha! Agak sedikit memalukan kamu melihat saya makan pada mangkuk yang ketiga! Lagipula akhir – akhir ini saya selalu sibuk! Uahahaha!”
Yamashita-san selalu mudah tertawa bila memakan soba. Katanya dahulu, soba adalah makanan favorit mendiang istrinya.
“Anda tentu sangat menyukai soba, ehehe…,”
Sepuluh menit kemudian, Yoichibei-san membawakan soba serta udang goreng yang telah kupesan.
“Yamashita-san kalau sudah ke sini, nggak pernah pesan satu mangkok! Anda harus tahu itu, Munekata-san!” celoteh Yoichibei-san padaku seolah berbisik meski perkataannya dapat didengar.
“Hey, hey, anda harus tahu kalau aliran darah saya ini ada sobanya! Uahahahaha!”
“Hahahaha! Anda bisa saja!”
Begitulah percandaan dan percakapan ala bapak – bapak yang sedikit tidak kumengerti. Mereka punya selera humor yang agak membosankan.
Setelah mangkok pada soba kami telah habis, barulah aura Yamashita-san tampak berbeda. Nadanya terdengar serius.
“Muneka- nggak, Eijiro-san…,”
(A-apa? K-kkok kelihatannya serius begini?)
“Y-ya…, Yamashita-san?”
Yamashita-san menyeruput teh hangatnya sesaat.
“Tidakkah Mitsue bekerja terlalu keras?”
“Y-ya… saya selalu merasa Kashiwagi-san… hanya punya waktu istirahat yang sedikit. Tapi…, sa-saya sudah ber-berkali – kali menawarkannya bantuan, tapi… Kashiwagi-san selalu menolak…,”
“Memang begitulah anaknya…, anda nggak perlu merasa bersalah. Anak itu bahkan sering lupa merawat dirinya sendiri. Lupa jam makan yang keseringan dan semacamnya, sungguh memalukan! Ia hanyalah anak kecil yang butuh ketegasan. Masalahnya, siapa yang berani tegas padanya? Itu mengingatkan saya pada orang saya kenal,”
Yamashita-san terlihat cemas dan sedih. Setelah itu, kami berdua pergi. Aku yang mendengar kata – kata barusan semakin merasa cemas pula.

Dengan segera aku berlari menuju Konbini (Toserba)untuk membeli Onigiri ikan tuna dan plum, setengah liter teh lemon hangat, ramen cup spesial, pudding, dan milk matcha.
Kemudian aku segera bergegas kembali ke kantor untuk menemui Kashiwagi-san. Aku berharap…, Kashiwagi- san masih di sana!
