Chapter Five
The rain pelted against the windows like the beat of a drum, a pulsing rhythm that could drown out the wail of jet engines. Margaret opened the door, and rain pours in hard. Listening to "Champagne Problems" by Taylor Swift through her AirPods, she takes another deep breath before proceeding to walk down the street in her green raincoat. To the beat, she begins to move more and more quickly. Margaret's shoes seem to become slippery, and the rain has soaked her long brown hair. It appears that the rain is falling more forcefully.
Margaret watches as cars and pedestrians drive around her, unaware of the young woman in distress trying to take a peaceful walk. She continues to walk quickly, her heels clicking against the pavement.
Margaret begins to run, her soaked hair flying behind her. She could feel the liquid cascading down her neck, damping her shirt. She pursues the unknown direction like she's chasing an icon that eludes her grip. She races through alleyways, down darkened streets, dodging puddles and low-hanging trees. She has never felt this alive before. The adrenaline coursed through her veins, numbing her pain and filling her with euphoria. The rain beautifully falls against the window panes of buildings as she sprints, ducking underneath light poles and leaping over gutters. She is free.
Margaret enjoys the rain because it helps to clear her head. It's been a while since she's been able to enjoy it freely, without the worry of getting caught or making a noise. The rain is a welcomed addition to the soundtrack of her escape. She runs until she can no longer see or hear anything but the sound of rainfall, until she collapses on the wet pavement, shaking and out of breath.
After briefly catching her breath, Margaret starts to dial Charms' number on her phone. She's about to press call when she remembers that it is 11 30 pm and a call might be abrupt. She decides to text her instead.
Hey Charm this is Margaret the girl from lunch I ran into some trouble with my family and I kinda ran away I was hoping you might be able to come get me and bring me home. I have no idea how to get back.
Charm replies in an instant.
Margaret hey!! Of course, I know who you are how could I forget such a pretty face? I can help you can you tell me where you are?
Margaret looks around she's standing in front of a bunch of trees but there is a road a few feet from her. She peers around for a sign. A flash of green catches her eye it's a sign reading Davenport Drive. Margaret looks back at her phone.
The road signs in front of me say Davenport Drive. Margaret types.
A few moments later Charms reply comes. Okay, I will be there in a moment I only live two streets away.
