When I first spotted her in my freshman year, I pondered, "Who is this girl? Her elder sister is a local legend here in school. I wonder what she's like."197Please respect copyright.PENANAlvgAcfDWlK
It turned out, she and her sister were exact carbon copies of each other—proficient in everything imaginable.
Singing? Absolutely.
Sports? Second-fastest in my grade.
Grades? Top rank.
Annoyingness? I was soon to find out...
She had all the teachers wrapped around her finger.
"Ann, could you fetch the books from my staff room?"
"Ann, can you mind the class?"
"Ann, could you answer this question?"
Now, before you label me as jealous, hear me out. I have a good rapport with the teachers myself and score pretty well. But, let's face it, we all had that one suspiciously smart person in our class at some point, right?
Her mom and my dad are colleagues. You might be thinking, what does this have to do with me? Well, they work for an IT firm that organizes a lot of family events—Christmas parties, Halloween Costume parties, even concerts!
I used to have a blast at those events until she somehow ruined them for me. Maybe it's just the awkwardness that comes with being an ambivert, leaning towards introvert in this case, with a classmate around during a fun social event. And not just any classmate... oh no...
I genuinely had no idea her mother worked in the same company until seventh grade. Hell, I didn't even know she existed until then!
In the very same year, during winter break, we both went to the same place for a family vacation. Even though we didn't see each other (thank goodness), she still met my aunt, who lives very far away, at the train station.
The next year, tenth grade, I talked to her a lot. We were actually friends, not gonna lie. She still got on my nerves, but I didn't care. Until the class began to notice, and automatically, what with me being a boy and her being a girl... the shipping began.
But, did I care?! No, absolutely not! Even my best friends began telling me I was right after they had their awkward encounters with her. She was everywhere.
I knew she was trouble from the very start... which is why I came up with a big-brain strategy. Avoid her at all costs. Give myself a much-needed break.
I had a three-day streak running until she HAD to ask me for a Math notebook that was lying on my table. (I had asked my desk mate to hand it to her when she asked to collect our books, but STILL, she had to ask.)
I gave myself a cheat day that day, though. Now, I'm on a four-day streak, which will hopefully only increase...
