I get excited on the day of the Scarlet Moon because my fur coat appears softer and shinier, and my body feels stronger. It’s like a self-esteem boost!
I don’t have homeroom with Nikolas, but I know his classmates noticed the change in Nikolas’s appearance too. The way they murmur behind his back, the way they stare in disbelief, or the way they sigh in awe at the sight of him.
In the past Nikolas has never had a drastic reaction to the Scarlet Moon, but today it was different. Nikolas was always a man of few words with a deadpan face, but now he looked bitter.
Passing by his classroom, I could see he was slightly slouched in his seat, his darkened hair covering his flaming eyes that were glaring at the front of the class. It made him appear intimidating. It looked as if he were ready to snap at any moment.
I wonder if Niky and Acchan broke up or something. I tilted my head as I pondered. Niky is usually happy when he’s with Acchan. I wonder what happened in the dorm room.
I shrugged as I walked towards the bathroom to do my business.

The bell chimed to signal the beginning of lunch and I dashed out of my classroom. I peeked into Niky’s classroom and didn’t see him sitting at his desk.
Maybe he’s on the rooftop? I skipped towards the stairs, greeting familiar faces on the way. I opened the door that led to the rooftop to be disappointed again.
Letting out a sigh, I walked to the railings. The skies were darker tonight. I laid my chin on the cold metal bar, staring into the distance. On nights like these, I would love to go running in my wolf form.
My right ear twitched hearing the quiet sound of angry voices. I turned and moved to the other side of the rooftop. Looking down, I saw the purple-haired vampire, Zaros. I never really liked the way he talked to people, especially when he talked to me.
I lost interest in Zaros until I got a glimpse of who he was talking to. My tail wagged as I gasped seeing Niky standing right across from Zaros. Suddenly, my tail stopped moving when I got a look at the dark expression on Niky’s face.
I had a bad feeling twisting my stomach as I saw this unlikely pair together. In a panic, I ran down the stairs and left the school building. I turned the left corner and saw Niky and Zaros standing behind the gym. I hid myself behind the closest tree, listening to the conversation between the two vampires.
“What do you want?” Niky deadpanned.
“I want a rematch.”
Niky rolled his eyes hearing Zaros speak.
“You got a lot of nerve laying a hand on me like that at the festival.” Zaros snapped.
“What can I say?” Niky smiled wickedly. “Asinine people like you need to shut the hell up. Should’ve ripped out your vocal cords when I had the chance.”
A vein bulged on Zaros’s forehead. “You'll regret those words.” He loosened the tie around his neck and took off his blazer.
Niky let out a deep laugh, doing the same. “Go right ahead! I probably won’t feel anything if I kill you here.”
I could feel my hands tremble listening to the murderous intent in Niky’s voice. As I peeked out, I saw Zaros punch Niky square in the gut. Niky seethed through bared teeth, his blood-red eyes glaring into Zaros’s golden eyes. Grabbing onto his wrist, Niky flipped him over his head, but the other vampire landed on his two feet and went in for another punch. Niky predicted his movements and grabbed onto the fist aimed at his chin. With each attack, I could feel a gust of wind pass through the air. Niky raised his leg and kicked the side of Zaros’s head, leading his opponent to totter to the side. Niky took advantage of this weakness and punched Zaros in the left eye, but he didn’t expect Zaros to kick him in the chest. Niky flew into the gym, rolling on the cold floor. I saw Zaros wipe the blood off of his face and enter the gym.
I moved from my hiding place and decided to follow them, peering from the gym entrance to watch their battle.
“Where did the confidence you had earlier go?” Zaros cracked his knuckles. “You scared?”
Niky was sitting on the ground, leaning against the wall. He stood up from where he was, pushing up the sleeves of his white dress shirt. “Who said I was scared?”
Zaros grinned from ear to ear, darting towards Niky. I could barely see the two of them battle in the darkness of the gym because of how fast they were moving. Niky kicked the front of Zaros’s knee, a loud cracking noise echoing in the building. Zaros winced and let out a grunt, but his knee went perfectly back into its joint. The Scarlet Moon increased their regenerative powers.
The noise of cracking bones became louder, but the two vampires continued to fight. The gymnasium began to tremble as their blasts sent gushes of wind on impact. Zaros broke both of Niky’s legs, pinning him onto the floor. He tried to pin his arms above his head, but Niky brought them to his side, and kicked him in the chest with a recuperated leg, sending the boy flying over his head. The force of his kick sent Zaros flying into a pile of P.E. equipment. With his body partly recovered, Niky marched towards the heap that Zaros was in. Grasping at the collar of his shirt, he lifted Zaros from the pile. The vampire’s regenerative abilities were weaker than Niky’s as bruises were still visible on his body and face.
As Niky scowled, Zaros let out a maniacal laugh. “See what human blood does to your physique? How magnificent!” The smile on his bloodied face made him appear sadistic. “Kill me now, you don’t have the fucking balls to do it.”
I could see Niky’s hand reach for Zaros’s throat. My eyes widened in fear as he squeezed the breath out of him. Zaros stared right into his glowing red eyes with a savage smile.
I growled and sprinted into the gym. Clenching his wrist, I bared my fangs and anxiously looked at my friend. “Nikolas, you need to stop.”
The vampire was still watching Zaros, keeping a strong grip on his opponent.
“Let go.” I calmly told him.
Niky was breathing heavily. The wrist that I was holding onto was shaking. The vampire finally released, causing Zaros to faint on the floor. Niky stepped back, but he lost the strength in his knees and fell with a loud thud.
“NIKOLAS!” I screamed, holding his limp body in my arms. I frantically picked him up and rushed towards the Nurse’s room.
