Eli woke up the next morning and felt immensely better. So he decided to find out where his parents went and find other people.
He left his home and watched as a tall, dark haired boy launched off his roof across the street. Erebus Rosen, scary kid, Eli would have to stay away. He heard about the time Erebus put a little bleach in his cousin's drink and burned out her lungs. That probably wasn't true, but Erebus was still a scary dude.
Eli made sure Erebus didn't see him, then he ran out across the street into his friend Jack's house. He wasn't there, and neither was Bro. Bro was seventeen, so he probably went to go and do seventeen year old things.
The only other place he would be was the place he volunteered at; the school's shop. Jack always liked helping out by fixing people's cars, it wasn't Eli's thing, but he tried to support his friend. The streets were abandoned, the cars all moved somewhere else. He passed by a telephone pole and stopped when he saw the flier.
Prevent the virus: Ways you can help
1 – Look for symptoms: Victims will have feverish symptoms at first, which then quickly spiral into violent coughing. Report anyone with signs of infection.
2 – Protect the immune: The majority of children under twenty are immune, however, there are some that might catch the infection. Protect the children.
Eli's blood ran cold as he read the flier. What had happened the last couple of days? He tried to remember. He remembered school closing for a cold going around, but it wasn't that bad, was it? Then his mom locked him inside and didn't tell him what was going on. She took the T.V. away to.
“Oh my god.”
He started running down the road, straight toward the school. It wasn't very far, and he was fast. When he saw the school appear around the corner, he ran faster until he crashed at the steps and his lungs were on fire and his legs were burning.
“Jack? Jack!” He ran through the empty hallway, wondering what the other kids were doing. It was the morning, they would all be in first hour now. Eli would be in science, finishing up on his Popsicle-stick bridge. Last week he was hoping it could hold one hundred pounds so he could win the ten dollar prize.
Now he was digging through shop for his friend.
“Hey, who's there?” A voice said. Eli smiled, it sounded a lot like Jack.
“Yo Jack, is that you?”
“That's my name,” a grunt, a shift, then Jack's face came into view. “Don't wear it out.”
Eli smiled so hard it hurt his cheeks more than a slap from his brother. He ran over and hugged his friend.
“You're touchy right now.” Jack winced, cradling his hand.
Eli looked down at the bandaged hand. “Yo, what happened?”
Jack grunted and sat up. “Well, one minute Mr. Blake was showing me how to keep the nails straight while hammering, next thing I know, he's gone and somebody broke my hand. I don't know man,” he looked down at his hand. “It just doesn't make any sense.”
Eli looked up, out the window of the shop and into the sky where it started to rain. “Nothing does.”
(a/n: I didn't take as much time on these so yeah, mistakes.)
