Beck left the violent scene and went to the house across the street. His friend Rosalind lived there, and she was smart. Maybe she could tell him her opinion of the crazy stuff going on. Her room was on the second floor and had a window facing the school. He saw her sitting on the alcove by her window, staring out of the binoculars that never seemed to leave her face.
He waved and she saw him and smiled, disappearing from the ledge. He ran up to her door and waited. She exploded out, dragging him in as fast as she could.
“Hey, what's the rush!” He brushed her hands off him and sat down on one of the plush living-room couches.
“You won't believe what's happening.” Rosalind said, taking out a notebook from her pocket.
“Oh yeah,” He said, grabbing her hands to make her calm down. “I think I know what's happening. I saw someone cough up their lungs this morning.”
Rose's eyes went wide. “You saw it happen? Oh my god. Who? Was it a kid?”
She was frantic, scribbling hard in the notebook as she talked. He took his friend's hand again and squeezed. “I don't know who, but it wasn't a kid. It was a- a uh grown woman, I think. Some of her lung landed on my face. It was some nasty stuff.”
Rose sniffled. “I think its still on you.” She said, wiping something wet off his face. “What does this mean? When did this sickness thing happen? I don't remember anything happening yesterday. They just closed school because of a flu.”
“You're right,” Beck said. “They close every year. And those newspaper things just appeared today.”
She looked surprised and leaped out of his arms, bolting out the front door. Beck threw his arms up. “What the hell,” he said, and sprinted after her.
