It was 8:56 p.m., and Alexandria felt she was on cloud nine. Professor Landon was going to be out for a while, and she was also going to be Richard's assistant. There were many stories regarding Professors and their assistants. However, the young woman believed that Richard wasn't that type of man. She was currently in her room doing some research when there was a knock on her door. "I hope it's not Quinn."
When arriving at the door, Alexandria slowly opened it to take a peek. "Hey Alex, it's us. You don't have to worry." Jenny and Max were on the other end. Relief set in, and the duo were let inside.
"What are you guys doing here?"
"I knew you would forget; at least try to forget. Remember about the party?" asked Jenny.
"Oh, I almost forgot about it. I had such a great day that my mind was elsewhere."
Jenny looked amused. "Look, we know how you are regarding parties. So we chose one that would be more to your taste. Here." A masquerade mask was motioned out.
Alexandria raised an eyebrow and noticed that her friends wore formal clothes. "You guys decided to go to a masquerade party?"
Max nodded. "Yup, we usually don't like that sort of thing. However, since we want you to go, since masquerades are more of your thing."
Alexandria was surprised that her friends were thoughtful since they didn't want her to miss the fun. She had been so consumed with surviving Elliot's class that her private life suffered, although there were good reasons to celebrate. "Okay, sure. I'll go."
The couple smiled and looked relieved. "Go get dressed in one of your nice clothes. The party will be at the campus' ballroom. Believe it or not some students rented the ballroom to celebrate having a reprieve from your tyrant Professor."
Everyone laughed; Alexandria entered her room and dressed herself in a strapless hunter-colored Adeline gown that tugged onto her body. Her hair was put in a bun, leaving some curled strands dangling. Alexandria wore a diamond necklace, earrings, and light makeup, making her skin pop. Once finished, she left her room, where her friends were waiting for her. Jess whistled, "Damn girl, you can make any woman lesbian. Here's your mask."
The mask was taken, and Alexandria wore it on her face. Everyone walked out of the room and excitedly went off toward their destination. Once they were out of sight. A figure walked out of a hiding space and quietly walked toward the door that led into Alexandria's dorm room. The figure got out some small tools, which assisted in unlocking the door.
The figure entered the dorm and went to the young woman's room, where a tiny camera was installed. Other small cameras were installed in the living room, kitchen, and bathroom when completed. Satisfied, the figure walked out of the dorm, where the door was closed and locked. "My mission has been completed. Although, it would be nice to have a little fun."
Meanwhile, the trio got to the University's ballroom, where some students entered in their best clothes. Everyone wore masquerade masks that hid parts or their entire faces. It had been a long time since Alexandria had been at a party, but they decided to have the intention of having a good time. Once inside the ballroom, a chandelier shined; the room was beautifully decorated. Portraits of U.S. presidents and Yale alumni hung proudly on the walls. Tables of food and drinks were displayed; the bar was opened, where the bartenders served drinks.
A do was in front of the dance floor, where some people were dancing. It was not the masquerade party Alexandria had hoped for, but it was decent enough. "Hey, do you ladies want to grab some food and drinks before we have our fun?" asked Max.
The women agreed, and the friends went toward some tables where they got their cups and plates, serving themselves. While doing so, Alexandria couldn't help but feel watched. She looked behind her, and there was no one that she recognized. "I'm just being paranoid." Alexandria and the others got their food and sat by a table where they drank and ate to their content.
Once finished, Jenny suggested they go to the dance floor. Alexandria was initially reluctant, but with Jenny and Max's insistence, she was forced onto the dance floor where many students danced. The young woman felt she wasn't a good dancer but tried to do what everyone else did. Eventually, Alexandria became comfortable with her dance moves; there were instances when male students tried to dance behind her. They weren't given the time of day, but those who asked for her permission got a dance.
While dancing, the feeling of being watched returned, making Alexandria cautious and look at her surroundings. "What's going on with me?" The song that the dancer danced to eventually finished. Alexandria noticed that Jess and Max weren't on the dance floor but at the bar. She was about to go toward them, but someone stood before her—it was a man.
The tall man wore a phantom-like mask covering his entire face. He wore an unbuttoned black suit, a black vest, and a nicely buttoned white shirt. His dark hair was slicked back. The man reminded Alexandria of Erik from The Phantom of the Opera. "S-Sorry for getting in your way. I was trying to get to my friends."
The man was silent but then motioned his hand; Alexandria was confused. He wasn't budging, and then the Phantom of the Opera song played by Vanessa Mae was playing. Alexandria finally realized that the man wanted to dance. She was exhausted but couldn't help but feel the stranger wouldn't let her alone. "Okay, just one dance. Afterward, I need to go with my friends." The young woman grabbed his hand; the stranger moved closer as he put his free hand on her waist.
Even with their masks, they looked at each other, but Alexandria felt the man's intense stare. The stranger then motioned her to dance along with him. He danced along with the beat; Alexandria initially had difficulty catching up to him. However, she eventually caught his pace. They twirled and swirled with the music. It was noticeable that the stranger would pull her closer, but Alexandria always tried to keep her distance. The young woman couldn't deny that the man was mysterious but had a dominant aura.
It was as if he tried to tell her he was powerful.
After the song ended, the two looked at one another. Then, the man slowly let her go, made a short bow, and walked out of the party, leaving Alexandria stunned.
"Hey, Alex, we saw you dancing with that guy. Who was he?" asked Max while taking sips from his drink.
"I don't know. He was silent throughout the dance."
"Hmm...I wonder if he's good-looking," said Jenny. She noticed that her boyfriend eyed her with a hint of jealousy. "I was just curious, babe. You know you are the only one I want for the rest of my life." Jenny kissed Max, who was slightly upset but returned his girlfriend's kiss.
Alexandria still looked at the exit and wondered who she danced with. Although he was a good dancer, she felt a cold chill run down her spine.
