I walked along the side of main street on my way home from school. I look at the cement sidewalk as I make my way home, careful to go unnoticed. The brisk autumn air blows in my face scattering my brown hair. I feel my face gently seduced to look into the alley to my right. A intricate glass door stands at the back of the door. I walk towards it with the heat of the street leaving behind me. “Tol’s Treasures” The sign above the door says in a simple font. I enter the shop to be greeted by a warm heavenly scent of vanilla. “May I help you find anything.” the old store clerk asked in a gentle tone. “I don’t know… What do you sell” I asked looking at the floor sure that he’s judging me deep inside his mind.
“We sell those precious treasures that others leave behind. Forgotten or abandoned there all the same. Some call it trash but in reality they are Treasures. You see child, these objects aren’t as they seem. They took on an aspect of owner from the past.”
“So like a used store.”I say.
“Look around find something that catches your eye. Then we’ll talk.”
I walk along the perimeter looking for anything interesting. Most of the stuff looks ordinary; except for some of the price tags, mainly the fact that there aren’t any. I pick up this mason jar with a cloud inside of it. When I pick it up it starts to rain inside the jar even striking lightning to the bottom of the jar. I set it down to look at a rusty nail as I pick it up; my arm is immediately pulled as if it weighs as much as lead, yet it makes no noise at it touches the floor. I find this really nice black fountain pen. I head to the counter and set it down. He looks pleased.
“So you’re a writer, huh… this pen used to belong to a poet. He used it to inspire thousands with his words of love and romance. I bet it’ll serve you just as well.”
“How much do you want for it.” hoping that since its used he’ll sell it for less that $20.
“I’ll take your headphones.”
“Why there broken?”
“That's ok… So do we have a deal headphones for pen.”
“Deal.” I say handing him my headphones. The second the transaction is finished the vanilla smell dissipates, leaving only metallic smell. I take the pen and place it in my backpack and head back home. Before I leave the alley I take one last look at tol’s shop and see that the store is gone.
