At times we managed to save lives and at times we had to take lives. But still we tried to keep our minds sane and our emotions under control as this was more important. Our vehicles would usually come under heavy fire and the enemy had air superiority so air support was out of the question. At times artillery shells exploded right next to us, the shrapnel and other debris hit the side the our vehicles causing little damage. Some buildings started collapsing in front of us mainly because as the engineer in our team would say due to fires. The streets were a bloody mess, filled with luggage, dead people, dust and smoke as we drove slowly. The war raged on all around us. The clattering of tank tracks and the ear deafening roar of their cannons, the battle cries of the opposing forces and the screams of fighter planes as they continued to bomb the city were heard all around us.
Sometimes I ask myself what it is that we're fighting for. But now I know because every time I look at my old family photo and see my little brother and sister along with our parents it gives me strength to push on till the very end of this bloody mess we call War. I hope that it ends soon. Till then I will stand firm and face the storm. I get the feeling that it has only just begun.
