Chapter Three

In the morning, I got up at 8 to make pancakes for everyone. I walk down the stairs as softly as possible. When I get to the kitchen, I bring out the pancake mix, twist off the cap and bring it over to the tap. Where I put water in it, and bring it up to the line. Then I shake it until it was all mixed together smoothly. Bring out the pan, turn on the hob, put a little oil in the pan and make the first pancake.
Aaron wakes up and comes into the kitchen about half an hour after me. “Very nice, pancakes.” He says sleepily.
I flip the first one over, “Since you are the first one up, would you like the first one?”
“I would love it.” He says. Then he moves from the door into the kitchen, and goes to the cupboards to get out the nutella, jam, cream, ice-cream, strawberries, marshmallows, chocolate chips, sprinkles and ice-cream sauces. He places them all on the breakfast bar, then gets out 6 plates for everyone.
“Bring one over for yourself.” I say to him, and I lift the pan with his pancake in it. He comes over and I turn to him. I almost drop the pan from my hands, he had been crying, and not just the crying where he shed a few tears, he had cried so much that the whites of his eyes were red raw.
I stare at him in worry. What had happened to him? “What’s wrong?” I squeak to him.
“Gemma… she… she’s… pregnant.” He takes deep breaths in between the words. I seem to be frozen to the spot. Did I hear him right?
“Is it yours.” I whisper so quietly, that I’m not sure if he hears me.
“Of course it’s fucken mine, Gemma is faithful and so am I.” He says annoyed.
“When did she tell you.” I turn around and turn off the hob and put the pan back on it. I face him again.
“Last night,” He says softly, “we were talking about how much we loved each other, and how that after camp we were going to go to Italy. Out of nowhere she says that she missed a period, I thought nothing of it. Until she says that she took a pregnancy test, four of them. And they all had the same result, two pink lines. She didn’t know how I was going to react, and she knew, all of her party. I mean maybe I should have taken notice of the fact that she didn’t drink at her own 18th, and didn’t last night at dinner. I’m happy of course I am, she’s the one, but we’ve just graduated high school. She got into the London uni she wanted to and I got into the uni at Edinburgh. So I asked her what we were going to do, she said she didn’t know, but one thing she did know was that there was no way that she would get rid of the baby, and I don’t want her to. Then she said that we would move to Edinburgh, so I could go to uni and she could find work.” Everything was pouring out of him, every detail that happened. All I could do was look at him and listen. Lily always says that I was really lucky to have a brother like Aaron that trusted me with anything, we were so close.
“When are you going to tell mum and dad?” I ask him, I pick up the pan from behind me, and put his pancake on his plate he was holding out to me.
“After camp,” he walks back around the breakfast bar and sits down at it, putting on what he wanted on his pancake. “so I need you not to tell anyone until then, not Lily, not mum, not dad, and no one at camp.”
“What about Gemma? Is she telling anyone?” I pour more mixture into the pan.
“Her mum already knows, but she wouldn’t say anything until we were ready for people to know.”
“Ok.”
“I told you because, one, I tell you everything, and two, because I needed someone else to know.” His pancake does not stand a chance, as he shoves the whole thing in his mouth. “Right, I need to take a long shower,” He says standing up, and coming over to me, “thanks for feeding me Lil.” He kisses the top of my head.
“No problem Arrow.” Then he goes out of the kitchen and runs up the stairs.
I turn back to my task at hand, ok I’m going to be an aunty. Aunty Lily, I like the sound of that. But still, what is going to happen? They don’t live together, they don’t have much money. Mum and dad would probably help them out, mum and dad. Shit, what are they going to say? They are going to be grandparents, dad’s only 47 and mum’s only 45.
“Oooh pancakes,” my mother sings in happiness behind me, “how you spoil us darling.”
“Yeah, there is two that I made over here, and one that I am working on.” She comes over beside me, her ginger hair is as wild as anything this morning, and her sky blue eyes searches my face.
“Is there something wrong?” She sounds worried.
“It’s nothing,” I say with a forced smile, “I guess that I am a bit nervous that’s all.”
“Oh darling,” her smile returns to her, “there is nothing to worry about. Remember that your father and I met at Wilderness.” She says, lost in memory.
“How could I forget, you say whenever someone talks about camp.” I smile at her. Mum claims that when her mother found out about Camp W, she wanted to go, and when her mum was dropping her off she spotted my father's light brown head and when she saw his bright green eyes, she wanted to go out with him. She somehow knew that she was for him, and he for her.
“And I know that you will find someone, hopefully at camp, but if not I know that it will be sometime soon.” My mother believes, or well hopes, that I will somehow repeat her and dads meeting with someone of my own. She takes a pancake and puts it at a place on the breakfast bar, then gets a mug out and a coffee and milk and makes a cappuccino at the coffee maker.
Sometimes I like the fact that out of all of my siblings, I am the only one to receive mums sky blue eyes, and both me and Aaron got dads light brown hair.
My pancakes were well received by the twins, and dad. Aaron came back down and had another pancake. Overall everyone had two each. I had a quick shower, and before I knew it, it was time to hit the road. Dad was in the drivers seat, with Aaron to his left, and I had the whole middle row to myself all three seats, the back two seats and the boot of the car were packed tight with all of me and Aarons stuff. Mum and the twins had to stay at home as there is no room in the car for them.
“Since this is Lily’s first time going to camp, I think that she should decide what we listen to.” My dad says as he is pulling out of our neighbourhood. “Is that ok Aaron?” My dad asks him.
“Sounds great to me.” Aaron says back, his eyes were no longer red rimmed.
“Well, just as well that I have a playlist all set on dads phone.” I say, poking my head in between them. The camp says to leave anything of any value of ours at home, so neither me or Aaron has our phones, ipods or laptops. My dad hands me his phone once we had stopped at a red light. I go through his playlists until I find my playlist labeled, ‘the open road’ I then find the connecting wire and plug in his phone. I press shuffle and on comes, ‘Snake eyes by Mumford and Sons.’

The drive took about 4 and a half hours, the trip went smoothly, we stopped about halfway through to get a little lunch and a bathroom break. The road up to the camp's grounds was a dirt road up from a side road, there was open fields all around, up that dirt road there was another going right. At that there was two big signs one said, ‘Welcome (Then below it, it said) Camp’ the other read ‘To Wilderness.’ When we went through that road it had tall trees on either side of it, then it opened up to more open fields. Only these were not empty, as they had some horses dotted about the fields. It was only when I looked out the right side of the car window did I realise it was on the side of a big hill. When dad had reached the end of that road he stopped when we were greeted with a massive white house.
“Wow, it’s beautiful.” I breath out.
“I know, I said you were going to love it.” My brother says while getting out of the car, my dad does the same. Then I follow, when my feet reached the ground however, I didn’t expect there to be little stones there. They both go to the back of the car and start unloading our stuff, dividing them from what is mine to what is Aarons. The air here has got to be the cleanest air I think I have ever inhaled. There are not many campers here yet, that is most likely because my dad likes to get to things as early as possible.
“Right,” My dad starts while closing up the car, “do you want to pick up your things and we will go and sign in.” Aaron already has his huge backpack across his back, he has a smaller bag on his left shoulder, a pillow under his left arm, and is rolling a small suitcase across the ground by his right. I soon assemble the same picture. Then we go inside the big house where staff are sorting out last minute things for campers. The inside is even more beautiful than the out, there is a massive chessboard that sits on the floor in one of the corners of the room along with massive chess pieces. It’s a small room with a desk in one of the other corners of the room. Behind that desk sits a women that must be about 20, she smiles sweetly at us.
“Hello, what’s your names please.” My dad goes over and tells her our names, then she tells us what dorm we are in. I am in the Champions dorm and Aaron is in the Cowboys dorm. The next room is the stairs that lead up to the dorms. This room is a focal point to the house. It is huge, in the middle of the room is a square bench that has a big globe on top of a fake rock that the bench wraps around. There are several doors all around this room all leading to different parts of the house. The staircase is double the size of a regular staircase, it takes up the whole of one wall, then carries on the other way then again, so it has three parts all together.
Once we reach the top of the staircase there is two ways to go, we go the way the dorms are, right. Then another choice, one way is the girls dorms the other the boys.
“Sis I will go and get unpacked then come back to you.” Aaron then goes left for the boys and me and dad go right for the girls. We come to two dorms one is ‘Champions’ the other is the ‘Cowgirls.’ Going into mine we come to a big white room with 5 bunk beds, there is a big window that a bunk bed is next to, I choose that one, the top one. We put my stuff on top of the bed.
Dad then hits the road again later once me and Aaron had unpacked our stuff. It was then that all of the other campers were arriving. So Aaron and I decided to go downstairs.
“How you finding it so far Lil?” Aaron asks as we were descending the stairs. I was about to answer when a blonde boy comes infront of us.
“Air, how you doing man?” The blonde boy asks Aaron.
“Great Al, this is my sister Lily,” He gestures to me, “Lily this is Alex.”
Oh this is the guy who plays guitar, “Hi.” I say and smile a little at him.
“Hello, good to meet you.” He turns his full attention to me, and I feel myself being stuck to the spot. His eyes catch me off guard, they are an amazing deep blue. “Is this your first year?” He smiles fully, and flashes his teeth at me. His smile seems to brighten up the whole room.
“Lily? You ok?” Aaron shakes me back to reality. I look up to him.
“Yeah, I’m fine.” I am totally not affected by this beautiful boy standing in front of us, of course not, why would I be?
“So, is this your first year?” Alex asks again.
“Yes, and I am really excited for it.” I say a bit too quickly. But if he notices he does not say.
“You should be, coming here is amazing.”
“Do you have any special talents?” I say without thinking. He blinks at me, confused. My face flames, “Eh, I meant like do you maybe play an instrument or something ?.”
He smiles again, one just like the last, “Yes, I play the guitar, what about you?”
“Lily sings.” Aaron says before I can.
“That’s really cool.” Alex says to me as if it was me who answered him, not Aaron.
“Alexander! Get up here and help!” A booming voice says above's us.
“Gotta dash, see yous soon.” Alex runs up the stairs.
“Ok, mind explaining what just happened Lil?” Aaron asks me, raising an eyebrow at me.
“What just happened Arrow, is that I just met one of your friends, called Alex.”
“Yeah but you couldn’t stop staring at each other.” He was looking at me? “Seriously, it was like I wasn’t even in the room.” Aaron says and continues down the stairs.
Ok, now I am even more excited for this summer!
