Nine more days, Adrian thought, and nine more victims. How many of those would he be able to save? He wanted to save them all if possible but he knew he couldn’t do it. A person had to know their limit.
He was pacing back and forth in his room, trying to think of a suspect. So far, he had none. Anyone could have put that trap in Richard’s locker during the night when all of them were basically forbidden to leave the room. Should he risk looking around at night?
No, he thought. He didn’t want to think what the outcome would be if he was found to be breaking the rule by the killer. The killer was deranged and psychotic; trapping ten people in a mansion and killing them one by one wasn’t exactly a sign of sanity.
He stopped pacing and sat down on the chair. He would have to think – hard. He took a deep breath and prepared to brainstorm.
“You seem calm.” It was Hunter, standing at the door.
Adrian’s body jerked in shock at the voice.
“So do you,” Adrian replied after regaining his composure.
Hunter walked in before Adrian could say anything else and sat down on the edge, facing him. “So does everyone. Doesn’t it bother you?” Hunter asked.
Did it not bother him? Of course it did. They should be screaming, shouting, pounding at the walls – at the locked up door. They were on a death row after all. And yet, they were all so calm.
"Of course it bothers me," Adrian replied. He made sure to insert a hint of irritated tone in his voice. "But it's not like I can do anything about it. Richard's dead and there's nothing we can do about that." Adrian slowly increased the exasperation in his voice.
Adrian was sure he saw hesitation in Hunter's face. It was there one moment and then gone the next.
"Well, we can all hope the detective, whoever it is, catches our host eh mate?"1109Please respect copyright.PENANAKh0Q6W6S6J
Was that sarcasm in Hunter's voice?
"Yes. That's all any of us can hope for."1109Please respect copyright.PENANASBrfMmm4pf
Did Hunter know that Adrian was the detective? Was this a chiding in disguise for letting two people die?
He'll be disappointed further, Adrian thought. After all, I'm letting another person die tomorrow just to get a crack at our host.1109Please respect copyright.PENANAOxFQ2gXBEA
"Well, I'll leave you then. You certainly seem busy," Hunter commented, glancing at the papers on Adrian's table.
"I ... I was hoping to, you know, see if I could catch our host myself." Stammer. Look nervous.
Hunter nodded. He looked conflicted. "Anyways, we're having steak for dinner tonight. I saw some inside the fridge. See you later at dinner."
With that Hunter left the room, leaving Adrian feeling somewhat uneasy.
