It was a Saturday afternoon, and like every other Saturday, me and my little brother always go cycling around town, whether it's to get shopping for our mother or just to have some bonding time together.
So we headed out on our adventure. First we went to the supermarket to get a snack. I got a cheese and ham sandwich and a chocolate milkshake, and my brother grabbed a packet of prawn cocktail crisps and a banana milkshake. These milkshakes tasted the best. We shoved our food into my little brother's oversized backback and looked around for somewhere to sit and eat.
As we were looking around for somewhere to sit my brother decided to have a peek behind the store (He's nosy and was probably just wanting to look about to see what’s going on) and came across this big black gate which led into the woods.
"C'mon Jacob, let's go find somewhere to sit".
"I want to explore the woods", he moaned and edged slightly closer to the gate.
"Fine, but not for too long, cause I wanna eat, I'm starving".
We pushed the gate open, which made a big screeching noise as it was being scraped along the ground. We headed through the gate and it was pretty dark, from all the trees blocking the sunlight from shining in.
"Look a frog!" My brother shrieks, as he points at the little beady-eyed creature.
"There's no need to be scared of it, it'll be more scared of you".
"I- I'm not scared of it", he stuttered.
"We can leave if you want".
"No, lets go further in".
"Fine”.
So we walked further and further, and the further we got into the woods, the more creepier it got.
It felt as if someone or something was watching us.
I turned around to see if my brother was still behind me, but he was gone...
"BOO!", he screamed as he jumped out from behind a bush.
"Why would you do that? It's not funny. It's starting to get really creepy, maybe we should leave".
"Are you scared...", he whispered.
"A little...".
We made a decision to turn around and start heading back home.
As we were walking all you could hear was the sound of our footsteps quietly squelching in the mud.
"I feel as if there's someone watching us".
I turned to him, "I had the same feeling earlier".
We looked about and noticed we seen the same frog which we seen earlier on in the day. Had the same sort of pattern, same dark green dirty markings...
It's eyes started to grow bigger and bigger, and it even looked as if they were turning dark red, it was so creepy and weird.
"Maya", my little brother said worriedly. "Can we leave quicker". "Yeah let's go, now".
The frog kept jumping and getting in our way.
"MOVE YOU STUPID FROG", Jacob shouted as he tried to kick it. “JACOB, DON’T DO THAT”.
The frog turned and started staring at my brother for a few seconds, it then started to open its mouth very slowly.
The frog let out a huge flame from its mouth, and I grabbed Jacob's wrist and began sprinting as fast as a cheetah could ever run.
I had to slow down to catch my breath.
I took a bigger look at our surroundings, and just then I realised there were maybe 20-30 of them glaring at us from the bushes.
I didn't want anything else other than for me and my brother to get out of the woods. I was terrified, and I could tell my brother was too from the look on his face.
We started running back down the path, and all we heard from behind us was the sound of the frogs spitting out flames and the sound of burning tree bark.
My brother suddenly stops and I hear the panic in his voice. "Maya, stop, help! My backpack's stuck".
Of course this ends up happening at the worst time.
I run back to go and help him. The frogs get closer and closer, and I’m not able to help him get it unstuck, I’m panicking and I don’t know what to do.
One of the horrifying creatures breathes fire near us, causing a burn mark on my brothers arm.
“AHHH, C’MON LET’S GO, DITCH THE BAG”.
My brother leaves his bag, takes my hand and runs to the end and out of the woods with me. We creek the gate shut again as we’re leaving.
“What are you kids doing here? You aren’t allowed behind the store, there’s too much rubbish and you could injure yourselves”.
I apologised and we left the area to walk home.
I turn and look at my brother, where he’s looking down at his burn.
“Are you okay, Jacob?”.
“It’s really nippy, but I’ll be fine”.
“I’m not really sure what to tell mum...”.
“Well...I guess we don’t have to tell anyone anything, it’s not like they’ll believe us anyway, because we’re just kids...”
“Yeah... I was expecting to have a little wonder about or maybe have a little adventure, but I wasn’t expecting anything like fire-breathing, red-eyed frogs...”.
