Say how do feel about this; a friend of mine sees SasuKarin as more of mirrored than paralleled to NaruSaku in chapter 662?
Hello, Blue! You always bring interesting questions :D
I fail to see how using different wording does anything to lessen how clear-as-day Kishi’s writer's intent was during those scenes. We have to remember that Kishi himself has said that “Naruto and Sasuke advance as a pair”, that they’re “yin and yang”. Staying true to that fact, during those chapters Sasuke and Naruto were put in the exact same situation: they were both quickly approaching death due to Madara’s doing.
The similarities are more than just circumstantial, or mere juxtapositions; they not only “died” in the same chapter, they stayed unconscious for the same amount of time, both were saved by an antagonist who is in the process of redeeming himself, both met the sage, both woke up at the same time and both said the exact same dialogue while doing so. They even shared the same speech bubble to better illustrate that fact.
Throughout that handful of chapters, Sasuke’s and Naruto’s respective journeys were portrayed as two sides of the same coin. Every step one gave corresponded to a step the other one was giving.
The same applies to Sakura and Karin in regards to Naruto and Sasuke respectively.
They became aware of Naruto’s and Sasuke’s conditions at the same time. They had a shared realization about the matter. Their responses to Naruto’s and Sasuke’s near-deaths were at the core of their respective chapters. Their efforts to ensure their lives also paralleled each other’s: while Sakura was able to directly heal Naruto, Karin moved Heaven&Earth in order to get to Sasuke. And while doing so, they both displayed abilities that we had never seen on the panel from them: Sakura applying a heart-massage, Karin employing her Uzumaki chains.
They’re the ones Kishi wanted to be by Naruto’s and Sasuke’s respective sides. Kishi could have made Tsunade go with Gaara; but he didn’t, he had the woman say she was nearly out of chakra. Why do you think that was? Samwise, Kishi could have the rest of Taka also express their worry for Sasuke or approach his dying body; but he didn’t, it was all Karin from the start to the very end.
Sakura and Karin were serving the same purpose. At the same time. And Kishi made sure to draw this home through the layout of the pages.
^ this page alone says it all.
So basically: No matter how you want to call it, Kishi’s writer's intent was blatant. Sakura and Karin were shown alongside each other because they’re meant to play the same role in regards to Naruto and Sasuke respectively.
