A week had passed since she had last seen her new friends, Jennifer was definitely a bit much. She didn't at all discredit her abilities, but it was hard to stomach them. Those words she muttered in that trance stuck to her like glue. Of course they came out as pure jibberish, though eery as ever.

It was late - 1am to be exact. Alice wasn’t that great at sleeping lately, but surprisingly the fatigue never set in. She knew as always, she would wake up feeling refreshed as ever in the morning regardless of how long she actually slept. Not accomplishing much this week, it was still humbling just to have her own little space. A space in which one of these days everything would click into place. She avoided job searching at all costs, her so called qualifications always led her down the same rabbit hole - retail. For now she had more than enough to survive, and she decided she would simply wait and face that obstacle when it would inevitably arrive. For now she would enjoy the peace and quiet, the solitude this new cabin offered her. She spent much of her time reading through old dusty books left by the older couple, exploring the woods around her home, and blasting music so loud she couldn’t hear her own thoughts . Yes it was late, but her mind was racing, she wouldn’t be in bed anytime soon.

Her eyes peered out the window, that same window Jennifer had seen him. It sent chills down her spine, but she couldn’t ignore the obvious. Every night since she had been drawn outside, nowhere in particular, but each night she found herself venturing farther and farther from the safety of her walls, on a hunt for whatever the universe decided would be her demise. Tonight her feet touched the ground beneath the small staircase, the farthest she had gone so far. But it wasn’t enough, she wanted to go farther. With each step she made a crunch into the earth , the ground below her already covered in the first layer of fall leaves and branches, the cool air was no match for her radiating body heat. The deeper into the woods she ventured she hotter she felt, sweat pouring down from her forehead. It wasn’t unbearable, the cool fall air feeling like heaven against her pale skin. Taking her next few steps, it was obvious she had ventured too far. A trio of roaring growls surrounded her, hiding in the shadows but approaching quickly. Their glowing red eyes cut through the darkness first, eyes locked on their target. She felt instantly paralyzed with fear, three thick haired grey wolves now circling her. She couldn’t move let alone react, how would one even react in a situation like this? She had never seen dogs let alone wolves nearby. Everything else was a given, bears - yes, deer, of course, moose - you betcha! These creatures were otherworldly, starving, hungry for her. Her gut told her they wouldn’t let her escape. They slowly approached, knowing how easy of a target she would be. They were locked on, ready to strike, until something else entered their arena, something they were actually afraid of.

And that was the first time I saw him.

As the man approached, the wolves whined and howled, backing away slowly until they realized he wouldn’t make a move as long as they left. And that they did, disappearing almost as quickly as they came. As she made eye contact, her body went numb, all sense of fear fading away. His eyes lit up with excitement, but she couldn’t speak, she couldn’t move. She was paralyzed , locked in place, just a puppet watching the next scene of the show unfold. He stood at 6’0, thin but muscular, chocolate brown eyes that she could get lost in, paler than her - much paler than her, chiseled jaw line. For such a stunning specimen he wore such plain clothes, pure white t-shirt, black fitted jeans, and black combat boots. Still in place, he approached her slowly as if he were actually concerned about frightening her. Reaching out hesitantly, he placed his right hand on her cheek, grazing it gently. He began to speak, but his lips never moved. She could hear his voice clear as day.

You always are attracting unwanted attention, love. If I said I was tired of coming to save you I’d be lying, I would come rescue everyday if I needed to. I wish you could remember - but you can’t get, you won’t remember any of this. I’ll come back for you soon, only when you’re ready. Please, just stay inside.

He placed a gentle kiss on her forehead, and just like that everything went dark.
