Part 1 - Routine
It was nine-thirty on a Thursday afternoon. I headed to the kitchen after finishing my homework, showering, and brushing my teeth. I grabbed a glass from the cabinet, clinking against the others. I filled the glass with ice and water. Grabbed the box of granola bars reaching my hand down the box. Empty. My sisters had eaten the last of them without thinking to throw the box away. I walked past the dining room and into the living room. My parents sitting on the couch watching the television. As a part of their nightly routine. “What ya watching?” I said, stopping and looking at the television.
“The new black widow movie, it’s pretty good you should watch” mom says, without drawing her eyes toward me. Her eyes stay looking at the television, with her nails pressed against a file. The file moving back and forth over and over. “Sorry, i’ve got homework” I lied, knowing I had just finished it. “goodnight, love you” I said turning toward the door of my bedroom. “love you” they say in sync. I hadn’t known that would be the last thing I said to them.
Part 2 - TikTok
I sat my glass down on the bedside table, turned the light off, and set my alarm. I pulled back the covers and sat, pulling the covers back over me. I opened my phone and immediately, a twenty percent battery warning appeared on my screen. I reached behind my bed for my charger so I could have enough battery to check instagram and scroll through TikTok.
I opened Instagram looking at Ariana Grande’s new post. I was just feeding my addiction with her. Ariana had been my favorite artist since I was seven years old, and nothing was going to stop it. I closed Instagram and opened TikTok. Nothing new, people obsessing over this new song “my crown” and “abcdefu”. Then I scrolled up to reveal the next video. The camera was zoomed in up close to this mans face as he said “NASA has discovered a meteor the size of the moon, heading right near the Earth. Scientists believe that their is only a small chance of it striking us.
I thought to myself: A small chance is a lot, the size of the moon, mass extinction?
But I had better things to focus on. Tomorrow was exam day and I had to get sleep. However it’s only a math exam, i’ve always been good at math. I slipped my glasses off of my face and sat them on my bedside table next to my glass of water. Picking up the glass and taking a sip. I laid my head on my pillow and…
Part 3 - The Last Of Us
A flash of red, orange, and yellow flew by my window. I heard a crash. Suddenly I heard the walls around me start to crumble. I started to ask myself “was this it? Was this that meteor?” I didn't have time for questions. Before the house turned to oblivion I ran to my parents room. No where to be seen. I ran to my sisters room. Gone. I had no choice but to leave.
I walked outside onto the porch, the neighbors barn on fire, the sky purple with fire flying through the sky. As if I could see the whole universe behind the madness the sky had contained. I ran into the yard, hearing a loud thud then a crumble, then… a bark? Bentley. It was my dog, he came running from behind me. I picked him up as he licked my face with joy to be seeing me again. I turned toward the house. Dust, rocks, and fire. It had completely collapsed. The forest I was surrounded by was covered in fire, ash flying through the air. A loud continuous swishing sound, as if it were a giant airplane flying through sky was the only thing my ears could hear. What could it be? I said to myself “don’t look up, don’t look up”. I couldn’t help it, above me was a meteor. The meteor.
. “ No! No no no no no!” I screamed.
Part 4 - Exam Day
“No! No no no no no!” I screamed, hoping I could make it out alive closing my eyes to shield the light of the fire. I heard from a distance “Wake up buddy, come on”. I opened my eyes. I was in my room. The light on, Bentley cuddled next to me, and in front of me was my dad. “Wake up, It’s exam day, you wouldn’t wanna be late” he said. I looked around my room. It was all normal, everything was the way it was supposed to be. Just a dream. A nightmare.
