With a solemn expression he looked down on the young woman’s corpse that lay in front of him. Her clothes were tethered and stained with blood from the at least a dozen cuts her body had sustained. It had once been an elegant outfit, business like, classy - but without seeming prude. Maybe she had worked in an office, but not the ordinary, boring kind. One that had its employees not only sit behind a desk and receive calls but had them deal with other people or had them go out in the open too. Her style of dress and make-up suggested she had needed to present herself but without losing respect or credibility. Had she been a sales-person? Or maybe she had been a-
“Leon! Any suggestions on this one yet?”220Please respect copyright.PENANASYh9DpfAPT
“Urgh…” A pained grunt came from the man in the blue police uniform as his superior hit his shoulder with more force than had been necessary. He quickly pushed the object he had held in his hand into the pocket of his jacket before addressing the detective.220Please respect copyright.PENANA1Tq3Wh2jGW
“Well, she most likely got murdered.” 220Please respect copyright.PENANAGHEwXlY8LX
“Wow, astute observation. But I could have deduced that myself without bringing in my best man.”220Please respect copyright.PENANACgrwW2bBvo
“Best ma- Joseph, you know I’m nothing more than a small fly officer.” 220Please respect copyright.PENANAr8FuzwekGd
Leon’s words drew a laugh from the older man. “Still with the humble approach, huh? You’ve brought men down that were way scarier than our little scissors fetishist here. And yet, here you are, still in that lowly officer’s get up.” 220Please respect copyright.PENANAhMFZD4qayJ
The dark blonde pulled on his collar to give his neck a little breather from the restrain it posted. “Yeah, well… You know I’d never see myself in a position like yours. Way too much responsibility. And all those rules you gotta follow-“220Please respect copyright.PENANAPRVALOBCAw
“The rules that apply to officers just as much as to detectives?”220Please respect copyright.PENANALvELRQE7f6
“Heh… Yeah, well, as a detective everyone actually keeps their eyes on you though, to make sure you actually follow them.”220Please respect copyright.PENANAS9PxKwTIey
“And that hinders you in your work.”220Please respect copyright.PENANAJOrm0QSksC
“Hmm, let’s say some rules don’t exactly encourage getting any results.”220Please respect copyright.PENANANd8c1gq65I
“Hahahahah! Ever the free spirit, eh?” The detective slapped his broad hand on his shoulder again, drawing another strained sound from the other man. “Well, alright. I’ll leave you alone with our beauty here for a while. I’m afraid I gotta say a few words to our friends from the news or they might get some naughty ideas like stepping over the tape. But do me a favor: Don’t pull any of your reckless stunts while I’m not looking. Do ya hear me?”
With a nod Leon watched his superior stalk off. Feeling a little exhausted from the conversation, he let out a sigh before turning back towards the corpse. That’s when his blue eyes caught sight of a woman sneaking around behind the broad stone pillars that supported the abandoned building. He scoffed to himself in disbelief.220Please respect copyright.PENANAp2AFGqLSTn
“Hey, Miss! This is a crime scene.” He called out.220Please respect copyright.PENANAwFH3XIBGU9
The brunette flinched in surprise at being caught red-handed and her head turned into the direction his voice had come from. She nervously wiped her hands on her blue pair of jeans before giving him a charming smile. “Heh, yeah, well. I know.” She shouted, trying hard to sound nonchalant. 220Please respect copyright.PENANAYCTPvBKpaO
“Oh? Well, great, if you know, then what are you doing here?”
Seemingly deeming his question as an invitation to come closer she stepped towards him, as she rummaged inside her pockets. Leon raised an eyebrow as she pulled out a notepad before hurriedly stuffing it back with a frustrated groan. Then he understood.220Please respect copyright.PENANACezFFSx2Tu
“Ahhh, I see. You’re a journalist!” he exclaimed with a strange newfound energy. 220Please respect copyright.PENANAZJ7O1MVQJG
“What? Uhm, yeah-“ 220Please respect copyright.PENANA9gA2T8yzuV
“Well, why didn’t you say so earlier! Step up, step up!” 220Please respect copyright.PENANAYg3jkUKhqc
The woman looked at him confused as Leon walked up beside her and placed his hand on her back, gently pushing her towards the corpse. “Let’s see, let’s see~” With an enthusiastic smile on his lips he crouched down. “So, as you can see our victim, god bless her, is blonde. She is, excuse me, was rather young. No wrinkles there. She also had a rather pretty face. A shame she died, really.” 220Please respect copyright.PENANADAiBRUD1h9
“Uhm, why are you telling me this?”
“Oh, right, right. That’s obviously not what you’re interested in. You can see all that with your own eyes after all. How stupid of me.” Leon proceeded to point towards the several cuts that slowly were beginning to turn a copper color as the blood had started to dry a while ago. “See these? You can only see like six or seven of them from this side, but if you turn her over, there are at least another eight more of them. They’re also rather inconsistent. Some are quite deep while others barely scratch the surface of the skin. It also seems like our culprit didn’t really target any of the vital organs – well, he hid some of them, but not with precision. It’s more like they managed a few lucky strikes. Anyways- Shouldn’t you be writing all that down?”
The woman in front of him stared at him, seemingly at a loss for words. She blinked a few times before speaking in a deadpan voice. 220Please respect copyright.PENANAEIZLVfNNp8
“…Are you an idiot?”220Please respect copyright.PENANATEmAGQ8mQk
“E-excuse me?” he retorted, surprised as he got up again. 220Please respect copyright.PENANAgvrxidpNQL
“I’m a journalist.” 220Please respect copyright.PENANAM8rrwYo7pZ
“Yes.” 220Please respect copyright.PENANAbu2QSR5Zt1
“And you’re a cop.” 220Please respect copyright.PENANA7Yp98y6Vsp
“Well, I’m an officer to be precise, but yeah I guess. So?” 220Please respect copyright.PENANA5Eb8WH0Cxf
“You shouldn’t be telling me all this!”220Please respect copyright.PENANAQhqExSxi9g
“…Oh.”220Please respect copyright.PENANA7uRHW9Ubye
“Oh? OH???” The woman exclaimed in disbelief. “You’re with the police and here you are, handing me what I’m pretty sure is undisclosed information, on a silver platter. Just like this. I can’t believe this.” She ran a hand over her face, visibly upset.
A chuckle escaped Leon’s lips before he looked at her with a smile. “Well, shouldn’t you be happy with that? With all that info you should be able to write a bomb of an article.” 220Please respect copyright.PENANAuOTDO5rlIf
“A bom- I can’t write anything from that!” 220Please respect copyright.PENANAMVWM2mkKXc
He raised an eyebrow in confusion at her sudden outburst. “Why not?”220Please respect copyright.PENANAcJIaiNQwru
“Because I need a credible source. And you sure aren’t one. What do you think I’m supposed to write? According to the most incompetent member of the whole police forcethe victim was too pretty to die? Yeah, hard pass.” 220Please respect copyright.PENANAvJ3sEvaeUR
Her words drew another chuckle from Leon. “You’re a weird one, Miss Glaze. Most reporters would dance with joy at getting information like that as easily as you just now.”220Please respect copyright.PENANA5CLcYW1UVZ
“Well, excuuuse me, I’m not a reporter. I’m a journalist and I have my pride. I’m not with the tabloids. I only write credible articles, with credible facts from credible sources and- Wait. How do you know my name?”220Please respect copyright.PENANA2wLeTBXcx7
“Hm? Oh, I read it on your ID. Elizabeth Glaze.” 220Please respect copyright.PENANAtoNVzHnHiw
“My ID- !?“ Suddenly she gasped and started to rummage her pockets again. However, it seemed like the object she was searching for wasn’t inside them. Clearly frustrated, her brows furrowed. “Where-“220Please respect copyright.PENANAI5I1c7fFW1
“Looking for this?”
Her eyes darted up and were met with a dark blue leather wallet that was being dangled in front of her. Leon smiled at the angry woman as she snatched it out of his hand. Her irritation seemed to grow by the minute. “Did you steal my wallet?”220Please respect copyright.PENANAZ8Ql8rrQNZ
“I prefer borrowing. Don’t worry, I didn’t take any of your money.” He commented as Miss Glaze thoroughly checked every pocket for any missing content. 220Please respect copyright.PENANAmTkjDB2hFa
“Just needed to know who I have in front of me before I spill all the good stuff, you know?” He chuckled.
Having deduced that indeed nothing seemed to be missing, she angrily snapped the wallet shut before stuffing it deeply into the pocket of her coat. “You know, I could just walk over there and tell your superior that his lackey’s got sticky fingers. I’m sure he doesn’t exactly appreciate thieves.”220Please respect copyright.PENANAc1jUl0wpYn
“Ooooh, is that a threat?” He retorted in an amused tone suggesting that he wasn’t at all bothered by the apparent consequences. “I’m pretty sure that threatening the police isn’t a good idea, Miss Glaze. Especially since it’ll be your word against mine. And since there’s nothing missing-” A low growl came from the woman but Leon just shrugged.
“When did you even grab it?”220Please respect copyright.PENANArPjfgrA2l6
“Oh, earlier when I pushed you towards the victim. I slipped it from your pocket.” 220Please respect copyright.PENANA5kDVj0dBXY
“You slipped it from my pocket?” He nodded. “Do you always push your hand down the pockets of women you meet? That’s really creepy, you know? Not only are you a thief, but a pervert too, huh.”220Please respect copyright.PENANAhmg5JpNz9q
Leon stared at her in quiet disbelief. He had been called a lot of things during his years in the force. But a pervert? That was certainly something new. Taking his silence as a sign of her finally getting the upper hand in the conversation, Miss Glaze’s lips curled up into a sly smirk. “Cat got your tongue? Can’t say anything because it’s true, huh.” 220Please respect copyright.PENANAmspvAFgxA1
He scoffed before shaking his head at her. “No, I, I was just taken momentarily aback. Because, you know, for someone who is unauthorizedly trespassing on a crime scene you’re quite presumptuous. I could have you arrested right here, if I wanted to.”220Please respect copyright.PENANACW4mglkNm7
“Oh, that’s rich. First you tell me all this and now you wanna put me in a cell to hide your incompetence. Way to go, officer.” 220Please respect copyright.PENANAyBg3WX5Dlx
“Well, what can I say? I'm fickle.” 220Please respect copyright.PENANAaD6nY9RNjx
“Yeah? Well, and I’m outta here. Bye.”
Without waiting for him to answer Miss Glaze sidestepped him and strode toward the crime tape behind which a crowd of reporters had gathered. They were pushing each other, fighting for a spot in the front row. Hoping of being the first to ask their questions and get a good picture. They were like a swarm of piranhas, ready to chomp down any small bit of information that was being thrown to them. All for the next big scoop. Their time on the front page. The woman with the dark brown hair would soon rejoin their rows. Leon shook his head at the sight. He didn’t intend to let the woman disappear without her answering his questions. And so, he took off. “Miss Glaze! Wait!” he screamed, but when she turned around to see him running after her, instead of stopping in her tracks, she darted off in a run herself. It might have been weird, but at that moment Leon started laughing. The prospect of a good old chase filled him with a kind of excitement. After all, it was one of the things he could do best.
