The moment I stepped out of the classroom, my eyes searched for the sight of a tall girl. Then, I found her.
It was easy to spot her, given that she is slightly taller than her peers.
She always laughed at me about this, saying and hinting all kinds of things to make sure I keep in mind of my shorter height. But oh well, her laughs were beautiful. I would do anything to hear her laugh for all day.
I smiled. I pushed past other people on my way, trying to get to her. But it was a rather hard mission, due to the fact that we were separated by a crowd of people.
She turned into a corner.
My legs started running.
She was halfway though the hallway.
I ran faster.
"Kanya!"
She turned around.
She smiled at me.
"Hey." Her smile were as beautiful as a rose.
"Hi." My body was hot after the rush.
Or was it because of Kanya?
"Were you running?" She let out a melodic chuckle.
Yeah, it was definitely because of her.
"Yeah." I chuckled with her.
"You idiot. Whatever you are eager to tell me, you could have just texted me." She made a face.
"I am not eager to tell you anything." A genuine smile spread across my lips.
"I just wanted to see you."
I could tell her face flushed.
"Yeah, well, you have wanted to see me since your birth." She joked, letting go of her feelings.
My smile grew wider.
That was true.
She surrounded her arms around my shoulders.
"And you are stuck with me. So that you can see me forever and ever." She smirked at me.
My heart fluttered, pounding loudly against my chest.
"That will be my honour." Dazed by her promise, I muttered.
At that moment, I swore, I would love her forever and ever.
She knocked my head softly with her fist.
"Hey, running boy, don't space out, you've got Philosophy class later on."
I groaned.
"Urgh, right. It's as if Philosophy is born to be my enemy..."
☾
I walked down the stairs, wondering whose tears were falling.
I stopped when I saw my mother sobbing in the living room.
I widened my eyes and rushed to her.
"Mom! What's going on? Did someone bully you? I swear I will-"
"No, no, Wyatt. It's the Dickerson's." She uttered.
"They are moving out. After 16 years."
It was as if a lightning cracked my mind.
"It was all so sudden-"
I picked my feet out of the house before she could finish.
I rushed to the house on the next street.
The lights that used to be bright were out. The curtains that used to be open were now close. The lively voices that used to dance around the house were now gone.
A thousand thoughts flooded in and swirled around my mind like a mad man.
No. No. I wouldn't let her go just like this.
I turned and started running down the street.
I ran and ran, sprinting like I never had. As if no one could stop me.
My legs began to feel limp, but I didn't give up.
I kept on running.
A grey car began to come into my sight. It was heading to the exit of the town.
I quickened my speed.
Our distances were getting closer.
It was metres away from me.
The back of Kanya's head became clearer.
"Kanya!" I started shouting.
"Kanya!" The back of her head was still facing me.
"Kanya!" She seemed to hear bits of my voice as she looked out of the window next to her.
"Kanya!"
I shouted at the top of my lungs.
Her head finally turned around. When her eyes met mine, they beamed.
She went on patting her dad's arm until he stopped the car.
The moment the engine was cut off, she got off the car and rushed towards me. Without a word, she embraced me into her arms.
I hugged her back tightly, as though I would lose her if I let go.
"I am sorry. I am so sorry." She started sobbing.
"Hey, shh, shh." I stroked her back.
"I never wanted to do this. I don't want to leave you." Tears running in her eyes.
I felt tears running in my eyes as well.
I never knew these words coming out of her mouth could touch the deepest part of my heart.
"I know. I know." I comforted her.
"What do we do?" Her eyes desperate.
My mind ran though so many options. But one in particular kept on coming back.
I knew I might regret it. But I also knew that distance would make the existence of every feeling gradually become tasteless along with time.
I looked back up at her. My palm reached for her cheek. I rose my height slightly and leaned towards her.
Our lips met.
I let the gentle kiss linger. Then, I pulled her closer, touching her lips deeper. She opened her mouth, letting me in. Our tongues danced with each other in a slow pace.
We didn't stop until our breaths went out.
"Will you be my girlfriend?" I whispered to her.
Tears fell from her eyes.
"Yes. Yes."
I smiled.
"Now you are stick with me, forever and ever."
