On our day of mourning the deaths of the rest of our family, all three of us sat in a circle. It was the first time I saw both my father and ancestor together in ages, though they were glaring at each other.
"I understand that you guys don't like each other, but can we not fight on this day of mourning?" I asked.
"There's not enough wine," one of them said.
"I thought you preferred whiskey?" the other one said.
"Oh, please," I said, "You two need to stop it. I thought we were supposed to preform the mourning ritual, which calls for alcohol in the first place. We're not here to drink, but to mourn."
"No, the mourning ritual is to drink," they both said in unison.
"That explains it," I said.
"You know, Violetta would've loved to see you full grown," one of them said.
"Why are you mentioning my wife?" the other one said, Violetta was my mother, so he must be my father, "Besides, she'd be disappointed that you didn't want to be a g-" I slapped his face before he could continue, because I knew what he was going to say and I didn't like it.
"Ha! That's my kin!" my ancestor shouted, "I think you're much happier the way you are now, Wolf, though I'm unsure if she'd like your obsession with werewolves. It's a shame that you couldn't fully develop."
"I didn't want to be tall or grow a beard," I said.
"But you are wasting your potential, Wolf," my ancestor said, "If you would just grow a little taller and had a deeper voice, you'd be considered an eligible bachelor."
"You know I only like men," I said.
"We know, just like Uncle Rupert," my dad said.
"Did you remember when Milly became herself?" my ancestor said, "And then she was left at the altar, but felt happier finally realizing that she was a girl the whole time?"
"I didn't know that?" I said, "Can you tell me more about Aunt Milly?"
"She's more of a third cousin twice removed," my ancestor said, "But anyway, she had always loved dresses and skirts, even though her mother wasn't too keen on it. As Milly was growing up, she had always worn her older sister's clothes. She fell in love with a blue eyed human boy, only to be told that he wanted a girl to be his lover. So Milly changed herself into a girl, only to be left at the altar. After that, Milly's dark demeanor became much brighter, because she realized that this was what she wanted all along. She did end up marrying a vampire and having a child."
"So, vampires have the ability to change sex?" I asked.
"Very few actually use it," my dad said.
"Which is why I was concerned as to why you didn't want to fully develop," my ancestor said.
