With the Holders known for their great capacities and jamborees and the Powerless beings unable to go a day without being spat on, being born without an Amulet has been labelled to be, without a doubt, the worst thing that could ever occur in a being's life.
After witnessing and encountering a perturbing series of executions, adversities, and loneliness as an ungifted child, which hauls her over the edge and causes her to flee the kingdom, Ivy Pearls comes back for vengeance. Now, not only is she despised, but millions of Holders are demanding for her head.
Yet, for Ivy's devilish plot to work, she must put her trust in thirteen other students who are just as troubled and insistent as she is. So, what happens when trust is the one thing she's lacking? Fourteen adolescent children. How are they meant to save one kingdom, let alone the entire continent, when they can hardly save themselves from their barbaric fates?
Note:The main relationship in this book is straight, but there will be side gay ships/couples that'll be just as important, which is why the book is also tagged boyxboyand girlxgirl.
I watch over her. I feel her pain with her. I feel all the many injustices done to her. And I wish I could intervene. I wish I could intervene but ever since my powers became depleted, this is all I can do.
The child is away from her true family. And she is in a family that treats her like a thing. Treats her like a tool to be used and a service to be exploited. She keeps all the hurt and the suffering and the hopelessness she feels inside. She’s far, far too young to be this hopeless. No-one deserves to be this hopeless.
What she doesn’t know though is that she is the embodiment of hope itself.
Listen, children, here is the story of the first winter.
Once upon a time long long ago, before the lines between gods and mortals became clear, there was a little girl. This little girl was cast out by her family, by her community, by all the people of that time. But the plants and the beasts and the sky and the stars saw her. And they saw that she was a child. And they resolved that they would bring her out of her sorrow.
