In the middle of the night, Sang-Jin woke up feeling extremely parched. Not quite awake and not fully asleep Sang-Jin muddled to the kitchen.
After he was done drinking the water he went straight to bed.
Do-Sik being a light sleeper immediately noticed someone else was in the bed with him. He quickly switched on the bedside lamp.
He was surprised to find Sang-Jin sleeping blissfully next to him.
Why is he here?
Do-Sik wondered.
Is he sleepwalking?
"Sang-Jin."
There was no response.
"Sang-Jin," Do-Sik called again, "wake up, you are in my bed. Go to your own room."
Still no response and no movement. Sang-Jin was really fast asleep.
Do-Sik looked at Sang-Jin for a long moment and suddenly remembered the first day that they met and with the irony of fate they were practically sleeping on the same bed.
Do-Sik became excited as his attention was rigidly concentrated on Sang-Jin. Suddenly he decided that Sang-Jin must wake up and go to his own room.
"Sang-Jin, Sang-Jin."
There was no response.
Do-Sik got out of his bed and went to sleep in Sang-Jin's room.
Morning came and Sang-Jin woke up screaming. He had discovered Do-Sik standing at the foot of the bed watching him.
"Why are you screaming?
"Why are you in my room? And what did you do to me?"
Sang-Jin demanded as he started to inspect his pyjamas to see it has been tampered with.
"You came to my room," Do-Sik said.
"What do you mean," Sang-Jin quickly looked around and realized he was not in his own room. "But how did I end up here?"
"What were you trying to accomplish by coming into my room in the middle of the night?"
"What do you mean by that?"
Sang-Jin felt his cheeks heating up.
"Sang-Jin, are you secretly in love with me," Do-Sik teased with a naughty tone.
"What? Me in love with you? What a complete fallacy."
"But you came into my room begging me to love you until the end of time," Do-Sik continued teasing Sang-Jin to mentally torture him.
"Be quiet! Lies, all lies."
With that Sang-Jin got out Do-Sik's bed and run out of the room.
Do-Sik stood there laughing for his own amusement.
Sang-Jin stood in front of a mirror as he combed his hair. He thought about what had transpired in Do-Sik's bedroom and a shiver ran down his spine.
"Oh, God why did I make such a fool of myself," Sang-Jin moaned as he combed his hair.
He quickly dismissed Do-Sik from his thoughts and rather mused about what he was going to write that morning.
Putting down the comb Sang-Jin went into the kitchen, made the tea before returning to his bedroom. He placed the tea things on the desk next to his laptop and notepad.
As he was pouring out the tea an idea for a story came to him. Sang-Jin put down the teapot and reached for his notepad and pencil.
Here is an idea for a novel.
Two drastically different final year University students must work together on an essay about first love for the school's literary magazine which leads to them falling in love. Then a sad, beautiful tragic situation will arise to separate them.
Sang-Jin quickly scribbled the ideas down as he looked out the window. The plot was slowly developing in his mind.
The open and in came Shin Do-Sik.
"I need you to be my caddy for today," Do-Sik informed.
"Why?"
"I will give you fifteen minutes to get ready."
Do-Sik simply ignored the question and then he was gone.
An enraged Sang-Jin threw the notepad after him. It hit the closed door before falling to the floor.
Twenty minutes later Shin Do-Sik carried out his golf bag stand out the penthouse with Sang-Jin following behind him.
Once they were inside the elevator, Sang-Jin turned and asked; "Why do you want me to be your caddy?"
"My caddy suddenly quit."
"I see," Sang-Jin nodded, "is it because of something that you did?"
"I do not know," Do-Sik answered tartly.
"Did he tell you his reasons for quitting?"
Sang-Jin was curious.
"No, he didn't and I do not care to know."
Sang-Jin was not confounded by Do-Sik's response. For he was indifferent, cold and cruel.
The golf driving range was filled with children and golf enthusiasts.
"Why are there so many children here," Sang-Jin asked.
"It's an outreach program which introduces the game of golf to young children. Each year professional players volunteer their time to teach them about the game "
"So are you volunteering too?"
"Yes, for the past five years."
Now Sang-Jin was thunderstruck.
Each time he felt he had figured out Shin Do-Sik, he would do something completely different.
"It's something they would never forget. Each time they are invited it's a special opportunity to see a different world than what they are used to."
Sang-Jin got on with caddy duties, while Do-Sik taught the children how to perfect their golf swing and the etiquette of the gentleman's game.
With golf lessons over it was time for refreshment and Sang-Jin used his opportunity asked a group of children about their highlights.
"My highlights were getting autographs and eating," a girl of eight said with laughter.
"Getting to see all the players that I usually see on television in person is really nice, a girl of twelve added.
Do-Sik opened a bottle of water as Joo-ho approached. They had played several golf tournaments together.
"You know of the Mayor's garden party, right?"
Joo-ho began as he reached for a cupcake.
"I am not going," Do-Sik put the water bottle to his lips.
"I think you should reconsider your decision. The invitation is by special request."
"From the Mayor?"
"No, it's from his wife. Clearly she is a fan of Im Sang-Jin."
"So I am invited because of Sang-Jin."
Joo-ho nodded. "I guess being a couple has it's own appeal."
"I am not going."
Do-Sik stood his ground.
"Well, just let Sang-Jin know that you two have an invite."
In the parking lot, Do-Sik put his golf bag stand in the boot before getting behind the steering wheel.
As Do-Sik drove, he stole quick secret glances at Sang-Jin before telling him about the invitation.
"We have been invited to the Mayor's garden party."
"Do I have to go?"
"You are the reason for the invitation. Am sure it would be great for networking and social climbing which are your thing."
"I think I will go. Maybe I would find myself a new lover."
Sang-Jin joked.
"Remember the garden party for you to meet the Mayor and his family and not for finding yourself a new lover," Do-Sik forewarned before stepping on the accelerator with a vengeance.
