Sunday
A 17-year-old girl pushes her legs, running through the parking lot of a gas station she's just arrived at, her shorts slightly ripped, singlet, denim jacket with a knife mark down the back, her brightly colored rainbow hair coming out of its high ponytail and her shoes missing and no backpack.
Grasping for the pay phone, she needs a coin for it. Scrambling as she doesn't have any money on her now, she fiddles with the coin slot and finds exactly a $ inside.
Pushing it into the slot and punching in a number, the call to her relief is answered quickly.
"Hello?"
"Sadie? Sadie!"
"Kat, is that you?"
"Yes!"
"What's wrong?"
"I don't have time! Listen, I only have a minute. I'm at a payphone at a gas station just off HWY 28, they Woodlands.
I-I need help. I lost my backpack and my shoes and my clothes are torn too.
Can you send someone my way to pick me up?
I'll starve to death out here if the winter nights don't get me first. Please, the temp is dropping!"
"How'd you lose your shit?"
"Sadie, that's not important right now!"
"Okay, stay calm. Take a deep breath, I will send someone your way. Don't worry, is the gas station open?
Can you shelter inside till whoever I send arrives?"
"It's closed."
"Kat, you need to break a window and get inside so you're at-least out of the elements."
"But what about an alarm or something?"
"You're pretty far out, no security company or cop patrol car will respond in a timely manner. You'll have a few hours at-least.
Now, how'd you lose everything?"
"You wouldn't believe me if I told you."
"Try me, come on. How long have we known eachother?"
"Five years."
"And?"
"We've been dating three of them."
"Exactly! I love you, baby."
"I love you too."
"So, what happened?"
"There was a man, super shady, probably in his late 50-60's."
"Did he do something to you?"
"He tried to take me, he... He was a taxi driver."
"What the actual fuck, Kat?!"
"It's true, I swear, Sadie!"
"I believe you! But that's so messed up!"
"I know, now send me help, please!"
"I barely escaped from him! I had to leave everything behind in order to achieve it."
"It's going to be okay; I promise. You will be back in my arms soon."
"I so hope so, splitting up was a bad idea."
"I know, but you know the risks are greater if teens travel together. We stick out more like a sore thumb to the cops and that gives them probable cause to bring any of us in."
"Sadie-"
"Don't worry, we'll travel together from now on, okay? But we'll just have to be covert when public places together."
"Okay."
"Anthony is going to come get you, Kat-"
But then the calls disconnects, time having run out. "Sadie?" Kat says, and she places the phone back on its hook, making her way over to the closed for the night gas station, shivering.
It doesn't take long and she finds a brick, and throws it at the window, breaking it. The alarm doesn't go off, it must be faulty or dead or they don't have one at all.
She leaps through the window, over the broken glass, not injuring herself luckily. Guess training in gymnastics for years paid off, and takes a seat to wait for help to arrive.
