Friday
"Are you sure about this?" Kate whispers to Sadie who is holding the receiver of a payphone.
"Honestly? No. But I'm going to do what I can, I can be a very persuasive liar..."
"Hello?" Answers a male voice on the other end of the phone.
"Daddy."
"...Sadie?"
"Yes."
"Why are you calling?"
"I think you know why."
"You've turned 18?"
"Yes, Sir."
"...Okay. Come to the border wall, I'm stationed down there at the moment, assisting our great president.
Come see me, but don't embarrass me, understood?"
"I wouldn't dream of it."
"Good girl. How was the wilderness camp?"
"It helped me immensely. I was such a naughty teen and I'm ashamed to believe I was once that person.
I graduated from there."
"Did you? That's great to hear and I'm pleased to hear it helped turn you into a well behaved, well adjusted adult.
You can live with me."
"Thank you, Sir."
"Of course, honey."
"Just..."
"What is it?"
"Can I bring a friend?"233Please respect copyright.PENANABABfwMpiRN
And she looks to Kate.
"A friend? You mean a friend or-"
"Maybe, more than a friend."
"...There could be worse. Sure, bring your girlfriend."
"What do you think is worse?"
"Wedlock?"
"Oh, right."
"At-least you haven't gotten a boy to knock you up."
"I'll be there soon."
"Bye."
And she hangs up. "So, Kate. I know you're 14, but can you try and act older? Around 16 at the very least.
I know that's a really hard ask of you, but... I have some of Kat's clothes, she is rather petite like you.
We're going to visit my Dad and I'm going to yoink a security pass and when I tell you to run, you run.
There is underground tunnels to the other side and we will use them to escape."
"I'll try, Sadie." She smiles, taking the clothes. When she emerges, she looks older, the boots adding some height and Sadie does her makeup and restyles her hair.
"Yep, you look older. Hard to tell how old someone is these days, especially with the right clothing, makeup and hair.
You are Kat Anderson, 17 and it's legal because of Romeo and Juliet laws as I was under 18 when Kat and me started our relationship.
We won't get carded as I am technically the daughter of an official though that was wedlock. Hypocritical old man."
And they head towards the border wall and are let in. They're escorted to Sadie's dad who is an office with the president.
'Kat' gulps seeing the president sitting there. She has never seen him in person.
"Great leader, this is... my daughter, Sadie Bridge."
"Ah, yes. That woman who you... Well, nevermind. Hello, Sadie and who is this with you?"
"My girlfriend, Kat Anderson, dearest president."
And both girls curtsy.
"You both are polite. I understand you turned 18, Sadie and graduated a teen program."
"Yes, Sir."
"And you, Kat?"
"I am 17, Sir and turning 18 in a month and a half. I'm from a faith based home."
"Very good..." The president, says clapping.
"You're dismissed. Go talk with your daughter and... her girlfriend. While it does raise some red flags, we can't control everything. This could be worse, like if you both we're rainbow teens." The president says, dismissing them.
Sadie's hair is covered by her headscarf. Sadie's father leads them to a office he is using temporarily.
"Would you girls like some water?"
"Please, and thank you.", 'Kat' tells him.233Please respect copyright.PENANAhlMCGdBtYF
They chat for a bit and he fills out some paperwork.
"I must say, I'm surprised when you phoned me, Sadie. You are a long way from your home state.
None the less, I'll call my Limo and we can head back there to my mansion.
How did you both make it here? You're parents we're okay with you coming with Sadie, Kat despite being 17?"
"Train, Sir." 'Kat' answers.
"And your parents?"
"They gave me their permission. While they did tell me my relationship is questionable, I could have turned out worse."
"Indeed. You are very polite, well spoken, pretty and intelligent.
And it could have turned out worse so I'd pick my daughter and her girlfriend over a boy, my daughter knocked up too and either or even both of you being rainbow teens.
Say, where is your headscarf, Kat? My daughter here has one, but you don't."
"A boy pulled it off and threw it in the mud on our way here."
"I see. Don't worry, I'll get you a replacement." He says, leaning back in his chair. Then his demeanor changes. "Cut the bullshit, Sadie. I know you ran off from the Teen Wilderness Facility I had them send to you and now you come in here with your girlfriend no less."
Sadie looks at the key card on his desk.
And she slides her hand across the table, touching his key pass, keeping her eyes focused on him.
"Pumpkin." He scolds her and then he sees, 'Kat' snatch up a key on his desk.
"Kate, run!" Sadie yells out, being the last one out the door. "Wait!" Sadie's father yells and Sadie pulls the door shut behind her, taking the key from Kate and locking the door from the outside.
"Won't he call for security?" Kate questions and Sadie pulls a fancy phone out of jacket pocket. "Pick pocketed from him, he can't call for help.
Anyway, let's go."
And both girls take off down the hallway, Sadie sliding the card for a door and the girls head down flight after flight of stairs.
They make it the bottom and come to a heavy looking, secured door.
"This it it." Sadie tells her. "I'm worried." Kate says.
"I know you are, but after that psycho shot at us, it left us without many options.
This was my and Kat's backup plan, but it was an absolute last resort and Sadie pulls off her headscarf to reveal her rainbow hair, letting the scarf fall to the ground and she and Kate hold hands as Sadie raises the card for the door.
"I always thought I'd be doing something like this with Kat, but I couldn't ask for a better friend to do this with instead. You, Kate.
Thank you."
"You like me?"
"Yes, I don't think you can see who you are and will become yet."
"When we make it to the other side, can you dye my hair rainbow?"
"You know it."
And then Sadie swipes the card. An alarm sounds, the door opens and both girls run as fast as they can go together, holding hands and when they near the end of the long white corridor, there are some stairs with rails leading up and there is a blinding white light, they can't see what is past and head into it together, holding hands above their eyes to shield it from the blinding pain.233Please respect copyright.PENANAn0oI6eBaUX
