When asked to construct an argument concerning the course, I admittedly could not think of much at first until I remembered the class discussion about the 'shooting the elephant' story. I like the fact that there are decent discussion questions that get people thinking more, some questions asking for a deeper view on the topic. An example of this, is the story of shooting the elephant because it simply made people have to ask if it was the right thing to do or the wrong thing. I believe that we should have more questions like this to help generate such thought and ultimately make us look deeper into situations.
As a deep thinker and writer, I found this exercise to be quite refreshing as it had me thinking deeper into the topic. Thinking deep into a topic is something people may or may not often encounter during their lives and careers. To reference the story once again, it had the class think about morals of the situation which is not only a great brain teaser but also a great view into why people do what they do. Regardless of how often one encounters it, being able to think deep into a situation in life is a great skill for people to have and practice. A common example of where this could come in handy is with the subject of politics.
In the previous paragraph the reason of why was discussed but not how to implement this into the learning experience. I can think of several times at which this could be put in place, such as asking at the end of class and having a brief discussion on the following day of class. This would not only give those asked time to think about the topic but time to research it to further solidify their reasoning on the subject. A second place to insert this would be to ask at the beginning of a class period and to later ask for the answer towards the end of the class period. This would give students some time to debate what they feel is the answer, as well as keeping the topic fresh which leaves time to do other projects outside of class. In a way the reflections can be considered an example of deep thinking. One final note is that this could be done in groups of two or more to encourage group to group discussion as well as self thinking.
In conclusion, I feel as though implementing this type of deep discussion into the class more often would be a major learning experience as it would encourage deep thinking, a tool that can come in handy during life both in and out of school. Placing this into the learning system also would not take a lot of time either as it can be done at the beginning and ending of class periods, potentially five minutes for each time we would look at the topic.
