I walk to my assignment and it is a 17 year old boy, suicide risk. I step into the room to relieve his 1:1 who thanks me while I sit down.
“Who are you?” He asks me.
“I’m Alex, I’m your 1:1 for tonight, what is your name?”
I know his, but I’m still trying to be polite.
“My name is Madden.”
I nod, “You know it is 10pm, and you should be sleeping.”
“Yeah…” Madden trails off in defeat.
“Your parents come to visit you?” I try to start a conversation.
“They kicked me out, caught me with a guy…”
“Hm, well maybe it is sorta good they don’t.”
“Yeah.” He laughs softly.
“It sucks, when people care more about who you love, then who you are as an actual person.”
“Yeah… wait… how do you know?”
“I have a boyfriend, I learned a lot about care and people caring.”
“Yeah… I’m going to go to sleep.”
“Good night, I’ll be right here.”
About an hour passes and I hear a strange noise. It is him, and I know it is. I see his hands moving under the sheets and I pull off the blanket to see him with a blade. He did some damage…
“I need assistance.” I call out, as I restrain his arms down to stop him.
“Please!” He screams.
“No, Madden, no.” I’m struggling a bit as he thrashes while trying to bite me.
A bunch of nurses come in, and restrain his arms and legs, he is in a supine.
I’m at his head now, holding it so he does not bite.
“Madden, hey, come on. Please, stop fighting. It’s okay.”
He screams and cries, especially as he sees a nurse calling for an injection.
“Madden, you’ll get an injection, I know you don’t want that, come on.”
His green eyes look at me frantically as he screams incoherently. Blood covers his sheets and I am so lucky I put on gloves.
“Madden, come on. You’re okay you’re okay.”
I hate restraints, the fear and pain in his eyes… I can’t.
The nurse comes over with an injection and gives it to him, causing him to scream louder and I did not think that was possible.
It does not take long for him to calm down after that and I’m changing in the locker room, attempting to get the sweat and blood off of me. I’ve only been on shift for 3 hours…
I sit there watching him closely for the next 13 hours while he sleeps.
