I heard a loud, pained scream come from upstairs, and then a sudden crash.
My lashes lowered as I dusted off the books in Luca’s library, and I sighed, setting the duster aside and starting to the door.
Jess came running into the room seconds later, wearing a nightdress and holding a flashlight. “Dante.”
“I know,” I said, walking past her.
She just hazily followed after me, and I walked up the stairs and to Luca’s bedroom, immediately parting the wood.
“Master!” James said desperately. “Please, get back in bed! You’re not dreaming!”
Luca held a half-broken bottle that he got from god knows where, and pointed it at him threateningly.
“What happened?” I asked James.
“He was crying in his dreams!” Jess explained from behind me. “And… and James tried to wake him up but master freaked out!”
“Monstrum!” Luca screamed in latin, his right eye hidden by his hair as his left pupil shook in fear. “Ego te interficiam!”
“Master, please!” James said then, trying to step toward him, but Luca screamed and drew back. “Master, please, I don’t understand you!”
My lashes lowered when I translated the words.
Monster! I’ll kill you!
I just walked further into the room. “I’ll take it from here.”
James glanced at me nervously and took a couple steps back.
I stopped in front of Luca then, leveling my eyes with his.
He just held the bottle to me, entire body shaking with fear.
My eyes just shined a bright red, glowing in the darkness of his room.
His right eye suddeny beamed through his hair, the X glowing along with mine.
“That’s enough,” I told him as his breath shook. “You’re safe now. Let your mind at ease.”
He trembled for a moment longer before the shine in his right eye lessened to nothing, and his eyes suddenly rolled to the top of his head.
He fell forward then, and I caught him.
“Master!” James and Jess said at the same time.
“It’s alright,” I said then, scooping him up as his head lopped off my arm. “He was just listening to me, is all.”
They stared at me for a long moment while I laid Luca in bed, and he breathed softly now when I drew the covers over him.
“How do you do that?” James said in astonishment.
“He and I have a...” I paused, “personal connection.”
It was a magical connection. When my eyes locked on his, the devil’s mark in his right eye activated and his sunconsious could hear me, so he passed out when I spoke to it.
But Jess and James didn’t know that demons and angels existed. We just lied to them and told them he was the Prince of a forgien estate, and they believed him.
Over the last two years, they grew very attatched to Luca, though. They were almost as loyal to him as I was.
“Poor thing...” Jess said gently, brows drawing together, “every night, it feels. Will he ever get through his trauma?”
His trauma plural, more like. It seemed when his eye was slashed years ago, he was at his limit, but when his memories came back... something inside his mind cracked and he’d been reliving his trauma experiences through his dreams almost daily.
And it had been two years since then... I had to come in here every night to get him back in bed and calm him down.
James and Jess started helping, too, but the only one who could really calm him would be me. Although, I didn’t want to tell them because they wouldn’t understand why.
It was because Luca and I were bound.
Jess and James both watched Luca with concerned expressions.
“We should leave master to sleep,” I said then, and they nodded, starting out from the room. “He should be fine for the rest of the night.”
I just glanced back at him as he breathed gently into the mattress.
I just lowered my lashes and closed his bedroom door.
