”Stop moving.” He muttered, his voice low with concentration.
I forced my gaze away from the needle in my arm as he stitched me up, pretending my clothes were wet with water and not blood.
“It worked didn’t it? We completed the mission and that’s what matters.” I blanched as I felt the sting again.
”Sure it worked. But it was stupid and risky and you’re going to get in trouble for going against procedures.”
He finished the stitches and I began to study the ground in silence. “Thanks.” I say, cursing myself for how pathetic I sound.
He nods. “I’d do it for anyone.” I try not to let that sting. His voice drops with something I can’t place. “Listen. I know what we have is complicated but you can’t let that affect what you do on the field.”
Ah. He finally voiced what we were both thinking.
”I’m not! You act like everything I do is because of you.” I hiss, daring to take a step closer for an ounce of dominance.
His eyes flare and he crosses his arms, looking up at the ceiling then back down at me. “You’re being ridiculous. If you want attention just ask, don’t throw yourself in harms way.” He says too casually and my fists clench.
”I don’t want attention. We established what we had and I’m perfectly fine with that.”
“Fine? You weren’t fine last night when Jackie was all over me.” He raises an eyebrow.
I growl and glare up at him. “I was and I am fine. It’s not my place to tell you who you can and can’t take to bed.”
He smirks and leans in a little. “I didn’t take her anywhere. Plus, jealousy looks good on you.”
I blink and shift my eyes to the side in thought. “Really?” I say softly, leaning on the wall.
”Yes really.” He looks at me, really looks at me. “As much as we piss each other off, there’s something there. Please, please don’t let that get in your way.”
“And what? You’re just unaffected by all of this?” I try to keep the bitterness out of my tone.
He raises an eyebrow and leans on the wall close to me, his heat mixing with mine.
”I’m just better at hiding it.” He says with the tone that instantly has my knees weak, as he trails his finger up my neck and to my chin. “I’m sorry about your arm.”
”It’s ok.” I whisper gently, knowing exactly where this will be going if we don’t end up fighting.
He sighs softly and glances down at my lips. “Let’s find a mender to heal that all the way. Then you’re coming with me.”
I nod, hiding my smile. “Just for tonight.”
“Just for tonight.” He copies, with a look that proves neither of us believe it.
