Stage four breast cancer.
The words echoed in Maeve's mind; her soul immediately wanted to leave her body. Maeve felt empty; she didn't have the strength to breathe and think. A voice gently called out to her, "Maeve?" The voice sounded so far but felt close.
Treyton stood beside his mate as he gently called out to her; he, too, was shocked by the news. However, some of him knew something was wrong due to the scent he smelled from Laoise. Treyton didn't know the scent in particular since he needed more time to understand what she had. However, everything made sense; Laoise had cancer. The question that plagued his mind was for how long Laoise had cancer. "Doctor, do you know when Laoise discovered she had cancer?"
The doctor looked at the paperwork carefully, then looked at Treyton and a shocked Maeve. "She had a mammogram in late November, and her results came out in the first week of December. It was found that she had a lump in her right breast, but unfortunately, it was in an advanced stage."
"I see, but isn't there a possibility to begin treatment?"
"We could start, but I have to be upfront. Getting cured has minimal possibilities, but it was also found that there were other mutations on her lymph nodes and more. The cancer is slowly spreading throughout her body. Even if she did get cured, there is an eighty-two percent possibility of it returning."
Treyton sighed. He didn't know Laoise well but felt his heartbreak for her and Maeve. Even if Laoise had the treatment, there was a high chance of the cancer returning. Maeve didn't say a word, and Treyton knew she was still in shock. The Alpha didn't want to ask the next question, but it had to be known: "How long does she have to live?"
"If Ms. Connor chooses to have treatment, it can prolong her life for eight months at most. Without treatment, she could have between a few weeks to two months. According to the notes here, Ms. Connor stated that she refused treatment."
"She did? The thing is Maeve, her daughter, didn't know that her Mother had cancer. Wouldn't it be best for the two to talk about it? Maeve could probably change her mind."
The doctor sighed. "We can give them time, but we need to know in the next thirty-six hours since the cancer is in such an advanced stage." Then, the doctor noticed Maeve slowly swaying back and forth. "Sir, it would seem Miss. Maeve is going to faint."
"Huh?" Maeve was about to fall forward, but Treyton reacted quickly and held onto her before she hit the floor. Maeve fainted.
The doctor ran out of the room and called for some nurses, who then entered. Treyton was instructed to gently put Maeve on the floor to ensure her breathing wasn't too low. The Alpha was filled with worry and refused to leave her side. Once the nurses and doctor checked, a stretcher was called for where the unconscious young woman was put on and led to another room. "Please be reassured that Miss. Connor is well. We want to ensure that her vitals are normal and she wakes up. Once awakened, she will be able to go home."
The Alpha didn't want to leave Maeve, but he knew she would be in good hands. Also, everyone else had to know the news. "Alright, I will return to the waiting room and tell our friends and family the news. Which room will she be in?"
"She will be two rooms to the left of this one. I predict that she will awaken within the hour."
Treyton nodded as he watched his mate being taken away on a stretcher. The Alpha never felt so helpless; he wanted to take Maeve's pain away. What was worse was hearing that Laoise had cancer during the holidays. No one deserved to hear such news, much less suffer. He slowly walked toward the waiting room, where the others stood patiently. Aidoneus noticed his Father and immediately went to him. Persefone and Patrisha also saw Treyton and immediately went to him. "So, what happened? Did they find out what happened with Laoise?" asked Patrisha.
Everyone noticed Treyton's grim look and knew something was wrong; they braced for the news. "We found out what Laoise has. She...has stage four breast cancer."
Patrisha and Persefone were petrified. "C-Cancer!?"
Persefone felt devastated for Maeve; her Mother was her only blood relative. "Wh-Where is Maeve?"
"She fainted, and the nurses are looking into her vitals. She will be dispatched once she wakes up. Laoise has still not woken up, and we don't know when she will."
Patrisha was worried for Maeve and feared for her friend's mental health. "So what will happen now? Will treatment begin?"
Treyton massaged his forehead. He didn't like to be the bearer of bad news, but everyone had to know everything. The Alpha explained everything the doctor told him about; the women were devastated. Aidoneus looked grim and saddened. He went to Persefone and hugged her. "Everyone, I know I barely met Maeve, but we all must stick together for her and support her in the worst-case scenario. Right now, she can't stay alone."
"I know how Maeve is; she's not going to stay at anyone else's house but hers. I will stay with her and-"
"I will stay with her."
Everyone looked at Treyton. "With all due respect, Treyton, I can tell that you're a good guy. Although, you guys haven't been dating long and-"
"I understand your concerns. I also understand that you have other responsibilities since you are a teacher. However, I always want to be beside her so she doesn't overexert herself. I don't know if you want some time off, but I was hoping you would inform her workplace about the current situation."
Patrisha was surprised by his insistence. She didn't know Treyton fully since there were possibilities that he could be like Stephen. However, Treyton spoke and acted with sincerity, something that Stephen lacked.
"He's right, Trish. We both need to be at work and inform the school about the situation or Maeve could get fired."
"We have the teacher union, and they can't fire Maeve for no reason. However, you guys are right about work, so I will speak with the administration. They know not to mess with me. After work, I will come by and visit Maeve. Take it or leave it."
Aidoneus and Treyton chuckled; they admired Patrisha's personality. The older woman has a strong sense of loyalty to her friends. Treyton nodded, "Of course, I want you both to be beside Maeve. Now, we have to be there when Maeve wakes up. She will need us more than ever."
