Merida
The hallway's quiet as Father and I stand there, watching the controlled scene from behind the glass panel. Several members of the pack along with Doctor Scott, Mother, and surprisingly Mia, move throughout the room with a strong purpose.
That purpose-- saving Kristen's life.
It shocked me that Mia decided to go in there to help, when only a few hours ago she'd been ready to leave the pack grounds. She moved throughout room with tactful skill running from one table to another, as she supplied Mother and Scott with the tools they seemed to ask for.
As we watched the scene, I replayed the series of events as Mia told them to me, telling Father everything that led us to this point. As I continued, his face remained passive but I can tell there was a war raging inside of him.
It was the same one that was brewing inside of me as well.
With Melody pushing inside of me and with Sorrow pushing behind Father's eyes, I could tell he wanted nothing more than to check on Mother at the moment. Then once that was settled, he would hunting. I know this because it's exactly what I want to do right now, and rather, what any mate would do if they discovered their mate was close to something dangerous.
There's no amount of reassurances that can take us off this deadly edge.
Even though we can both see that they're safe through the glass wall into the emergency room, just thinking about the risks the entire situation posed sent me into a quiet rage. I couldn't even phantom what Sorrow is going through, especially after losing one mate- my biological mother- to a similar attack.
"Her wolf sensed magic?" Father asked.
"Yes," I replied. "But it seems that Mia's unaware of it and of witchcraft altogether. From what I heard, it seemed like magic and with the markings on Kristen's skin, it adds up."
"Unfortunately," Father leans against the wall, relaxed and in control. "only Kristen can confirm what attacked her once she wakes up but I'm not going to rule out the possibility." Blue eyes bore through the glass that separated us from our mates.
Melody enjoyed watching Mia move from one place to the other assisting our mother. She worked well with the other pack members like a single unit, even giving orders to a few of them which they carried out without question. It pleased us both to see her moving as one with the pack.
"The pack's going to want blood." He said suddenly.
My eyes tore from the glass screen, "I can keep them in line."
He shook his head, "It'll only rile them more. Our enemy attacked on pack grounds. They either did it because they're stupid or they knew I'll have to declare war."
"It'll only put us in danger attempting to go after something we don't know."
"Exactly." He sighed. "If I go to war, it'll be like offering up our pack members on a silver platter, and if I don't, it'll cause an uproar within the pack and members will go off on their own."
"So, either get risk everyone's lives and safety or be seen as a coward." I growled.
"It's exactly what they want." He nodded. "I'll be playing into their hands no matter what decision I make."
I thought back to Mia's story and the possibility of who were up against. "It might be too late by the time Kristen wakes up. Let me go out to confirm whether it could be a witch or not."
"Merida." Tension laces his voice and I know he's wants to reject the offer.
"I know, I know. But I can sense out magic better than anyone." I argue.
He stares at me for a moment, a sliver of grief flashes behind his blue eyes. "You're like your mother in many ways you know."
I think back to the photo in his office, the only picture he has of her. I knew my mother for a very short time but just from that pained look in his eyes I know that my mother and I are practically one and the same at times, especially when it comes it our stubborn and protective nature.
"It's the blue eyes, right?" I joke. "But seriously, I'll be okay. Who's ever doing this doesn't seem to be targeting males and if they do, I'll run. Promise."
I can see he enjoyed the joke from the subtle grin that caresses his youthful features, but his eyes remain the same. "Given the circumstance, I'll agree. But only after Kristen wakes up. If we don't get anything from her then you can go hunting."
Nodding, my eyes refocus, looking through the glass screen on Kristen's body covered with a blue cloth and members desperately trying to save her life.
I close my eyes for a moment and pray.
