Merida
I want to kill her.
I really want to kill her.
For the last hour, I've been tearing at these stupid wooden bars that only grow stronger each time they break.
As for the witch, she spent the time lurking over the scorching fire, whose flames grew a dark purple with every chant she muttered.
'This is hopeless.' I thought to myself. I was never breaking out of here. Not without magic anyway.
But if I didn't, I'd have to stand by helplessly and watch as the witch killed Mia. And there was no way in hell I was going to let that happen.
If only I could figure out how to summon magic....
I try to recall memories of my childhood in search of answers. But it's obvious why the method isn't working. I was too young to remember things about my mother clearly, never the less, any lessons on magic that she gave me.
As for my Father, who had to deal with a pack on top of the grief he felt after losing his wife and eldest son, magic was the last thing on his mind.
Thus meaning, unless by some miracle I can instantly figure out how to be a witch, I'm screwed.
A distant yet familiar song flooded into me, instantly. Like the sound of people chanting. Or rather...
A call.
The call of a thousand wolves brings Melody to the surface. His ears perked up to listen. And then we heard it again. A war-cry.
For a moment, hope weighed heavy on my heart and then just as quickly, dread overpowered it as the realization sunk in.
No...
They were coming. And that meant Mia was coming. Shit....
"It seems Peter finally stopped being a coward." The witch snickered, her eyes lingered towards one of the pathways as she heard their cry.
My eyes shot towards her as a growl tore through me at her insult. I could feel the pack's fire course through me, heating both my blood and every nerve in my body.
"It's only a matter of time." She said. "I shall fulfill my promise to your mother." She stood, quickly gathering a grimoire from the table. With a sweep of her hand, she returned the flames to their original color. "I will free you." She whispered.
The witch paused for a moment as she began to exit the opening. "When this is over, you'll thank me."
"When I get out of here, you're dead. On my life, I swear I'm going to kill you." I growled.
Anger passed through her eyes as she smirked. "Your mother would've been able to do it the moment she woke up. When I kill Mia, I pray you finally realize how powerful you are."
Kicking at the cage bars, I screamed as the witch left. My mate was going to die and I was stuck in a fucking cage.
Melody shifted within me as I balled into myself. Light tears welled in frustration as I willed myself not to cry to no avail.
It was useless.
"Merida." Someone whispered as Melody tried to rise within me. I pushed him down quickly. Now wasn't the time to accidentally shift.
If I did.... I didn't even want to imagine the horrors that would happen to a confided wolf in mid-shift.
"Merida." The voice called again as it began to grow louder.
My heart started to beat rapidly as I feared for the life of my packmate. "I'm here." I whispered back hoping they would trace the sound back.
Within moments and to my relief, I heard the light footsteps as my packmate got closer to my location. Melody pushed within me desperate to break out as our rescue finally came for us.
However, my heart plummeted and bile began to rise in my throat once I realized who came for me.
Mia.
Mia came for me. Mia is here.
"Merida, shit." She breathed as she ran past the fire to the cage. "Are you okay? Jesus, what the hell is this?" She said as she gripped the bars of the cage.
She looked dangerously beautiful. A warrior. Dressed in our pack's battle gear, she wore a black jacket in attempt to cover up the rows of silver that lined her waist but the scent was too strong for me not to notice.
Her long twists were tied back tightly, enhancing the tense look on her face as she worked out a plan in mind to try to get me out of the cage.
The tears that I attempted to force back fell rapidly. This can't be happening. She can't be here. I can't just sit by and watch her die.
I shook my head softly as the tears ran down my face.
"Merida," She paused, witnessing my weakness. But I don't care and neither did she. "I'm so sorry. I shouldn't have reacted like that." She reached for my face and the tears fell faster. As much as I want her here, she needs to leave.
"Mia." I try to warn her.
"I was just surprised." She continued. "But I didn't mean to reject you."
My heart began to race at the comment but my rationale made me refocus on the massive problem in the next room.
"Mia. You need to leave." I gripped her hand. "You have to get out of here. Find the others. Bring them back."
"I'm not leaving you here." She pulled her hand away. "You called for me."
What? "I didn't call for you." I said as the reality of the situation began to sink in. "The witch." I breathed.
So that's what she'd been doing the whole time.
"The witch?" Mia cocked an eyebrow in question.
Panic settled in my heart. Fear pierced me. This was her plan. She lured Mia to the cave. While I'd been sitting around in this damn cage, she'd managed to summon my own mate here.
"Mia, the witch is trying to--" I began to warn her.
"Finally." The witch's crooked voice broke into my warning, causing Melody and I to growl as Mia stood and turned around. "It took me four years to find you."
The sight of Mia and the witch in the same room shook me and my panic rose quickly.
"Mia, get out of here. She's trying to kill you." I shouted as Mia rose using her body as a shield between the witch and I.
"Kill me?" Madness scoffed. Oh no.
"Madness," Shit. I should've known she would come out. "Please, just run. Don't fight her."
"Fight her? This witch--" Madness growled, slowly moving to pull out one of the silvers around her waist. "Why?"
Madness's subtle yet quiet question stilled me for a moment. Why would she ask that?
But the witch only laughed. "You know why." She seethed. "I made a promise to protect my sister's daughter. From you."
"You're the reason we're here. If you wanted us dead, you should've let us die."
I flinched at the statement.
"I should've. But I couldn't. Not until I was certain what you were."
"And that is?" The silver turned in Mia's hand. The witch's eyes fell to it for a moment before returning to Madness.
"You are Darkness. A being created to kill." The witch began to move her hands over the fire.
Lies. Something within me said.
"The worse kind of evil."
Melody pushed within me as the flames turned purple. 237Please respect copyright.PENANAnsQ2tYmcFy
More lies.
"You are fated to kill Merida." She uttered as she began her curse.
She's delusional. Corrupted. This is the price for using forbidden magic. An unfamiliar deep voice stated.
"To protect her. I must kill you."
"Mia, run." I screamed as the room lit up in a series of flames, blinding both Mia and I. Mia ran as the flames flew in our direction.
To my frustration, the flames touched the cage bars but died out instantly as Mia began to run.
Another wave flew towards Mia, hitting the herb covered wall behind her. I coughed as the burning stench filled the space and moved to cover my nose to no avail.
Blinking through the smoke, I watched in horror as Mia moved to attack.
The putrid smoke snuffed out any warning I could say as it filled my lungs. I closed my eyes for a moment as the coughing consumed my voice. However, once I did, a vision appeared in the back of my head.
It was quick, like the flash of a photograph, but the picture was unmistakable. I was a child being held by my mother.
We stood in front of a dying tree shrouding in a strange seal. My mother--Natalie, had her hand placed to the tree.
Do you see it now? The voice said to me.
As my vision returned to the smoky room, the words my mother said that day flooded my mind.
'To overcome magic, you need a power that's either equal yet opposite to it or stronger than it.'
I looked at the seal the witch placed on the bars of the cage. Etched on the branches were the marks that often accompanied her magic.
Marks of the rituals she used to draw from. How did I not see them?
They were the same ones that were currently etched on my leg. The witch was drawing magic from me and she has been the entire time.
Listen Merida, until you heal that mark. She'll continue to use your magic to kill your mate. The voice said.
"But how the hell am I supposed to do that? I never learned how to use magic." I thought back, not caring who I was talking to.
You're the daughter of a powerful witch. The descendant of Lykos. The child of Light. The voice laughed. You already outrank her without experience and skill.
As the voice spoke, something clicked inside me.
"Okay," I begin. "What do I need to do?"
It's simple. The voice said. Just think. And feel.
