I rushed to Belle's room only to see that she was in the same position she was in the last time I saw her. Relief washes over me as I close her door again.
So, the crash wasn't caused by her.
Opening my senses, I hear voices coming from the kitchen.
Hurrying there I blended in with the shadows so the intruders wouldn't sense me.
Upon entering I let out a frustrated sigh.
It was Dastran.
Of course.
The greed demon was busy stealing my silverware, while another demon I didn't recognize ate away at my refrigerator. It's easy to see how they got in. But how Dastran got through the newly installed locks on the door is a mystery to me. When I revealed myself, I startled the demon with brown eyes. He was a half-breed. His eyes widen as he drops the grape in his hand. It rolls along the floor, stopping at my feet. Dastran on the other hand seems amused and has yet to unhand my silverware.
"Luci!" He comes up and hugs me like I'm his sworn sister, and he hadn't seen me in ages.
Then I shrugged him off. "How did you get into my house? I'm pretty sure I watched Ollsor put a brand-new lock on the door."
"A magician never reveals his secrets."
"You're not a magician, that'd mess up the natural order of things." I shook my head wondering how we became friends in the first place. "But please, tell me why the fuck are you in my house? Don't you have anything better to do?"
"Calm your tits, Luci," Dastran rolls his eyes. "My new friend and I were just dropping by. Hey, Azlan, come introduce yourself to my best friend."
The halfling, Azlan, gave me a nervous smile. The demon was shivering so much I was sure he'd pass out any minute.
"Hi." he whispers giving a small wave.
"Aww, don't be shy Azzie, Luci won't bite." Dastran pats Azlan on the head, turning his gaze towards me. "Right?"
"Sure."
"All right, now that we're all acquainted, why don't we discuss the little angel problem in your guest bedroom? So, what's the deal, Oh Great One? She's been in there for over a week now. How in the seven hells are we planning to wake her up?"
I narrowed my eyes at the greed demon who had failed to realize we had a complete stranger in our midst. He had just spewed the very secret we'd been trying to keep from outsiders.
Great. Just fuckin great. Thank you Dastran for your carelessness.
I watched as Azlan took in my words. His mouth opened and closed like a fish out of water. "Wait, why is there an angel here? He asks, "I thought all of the Divine were behind heaven's gates." It's comforting to know he can say more than one word. As if realizing his mistake, Dastran sets the silverware in his hands on the table, before walking over to the very confused demon.
"Hey Azzie, you won't tell anyone what you heard just now will you?" Dastran asked, putting his hand on the half-blood's shoulder, staring into his eyes. He leans and whispers something in Azlan's ear, causing the demon to freeze up, then shake his head frantically. Whatever, Dastran told him it must've scared him.
"I won't tell anyone about the angel." Azlan said, swallowing hard.
"See, problem solved." Dastran giggles like a teenager just catching up on the latest gossip.
I nodded, even though I wasn't convinced. I didn't trust the halfling. There was something about him that seemed off to me.
"Well, I talked to Debbie, but she had something to do. She should be getting back to me-"
I was interrupted by the buzzing coming from my jeans pocket. It's my phone. Reaching for the device, I see that the caller ID is my sister. I guess she finally forgives me for our dispute.
"Hello?" I answered.
There was labored breathing on the other line, and what sounded like muffled talking.
"Hello?"
My thumb hovered over the red hang up button. My sister could call me back later if she didn't want to talk like an adult. Just as I am about to hit the button, my sister's voice comes through.
"Luci, I-"
The phone starts to break up. "Wait, Lilah, I can't hear you."
"I figured out what happened to mom, I figured out why the Divine are locked away behind the gates." She sounded out of breath, as if she'd been running those things the humans used to do for charity, marathons I think they called them. "I know- Hey what the fuck-"
There was a loud crash, then silence.
"Lily?... Lilah?"
Beep... Beep... *Beep...
