'I cannot believe we are home,' Maia says smiling and looking around Valentine's Diner. 'You could've called more, dad,' Maia says. 'You could've answered the phone,' Valentine says back. 'Oh, well, you know. I was busy studying,' Maia lies. 'I know you have a boyfriend,' Valentine says and pours two cups of coffee. 'How?!' Maia lets out surprised. 'Your best friend came here once a month to make sure I still were the frog apron she got me for my birthday. And she and Anna or Paul are not whisperers.'
'Oh, well, now you know,' Maia sighs. 'You can tell me all about him.' Valentine smiles. 'His name is Mateo, he's Mexican-American. He studies Chemistry and wants to become a teacher or professor. He's really, really sweet and handsome. Oh, dad, he's so kind and adorable.' Maia dreams away of her boyfriend and Valentine smiles proud at his daughter. 'He sounds like a good boyfriend.' 'He really is dad,' Maia says and takes her father's hand to make her statement clear.
'He should come and visit if he can. Where is he from?' 'New York,' Maia smiles. 'That's not too far away. There's a bus from New York to Rose Mountain. And then another bus to Rose Hills.' Valentine says thinking. 'Do you really want to meet him?' Maia asks with a big smile. 'I do want to meet the young man that makes you so happy you can't stop smiling,' Valentine says and hugs his daughter. 'I love you, dad,' Maia says. 'I love you too, sweet girl,' Valentine says and kisses the top of his daughter's head.
