Act 12

(Curtain opens )

Scene:

Afternoon. 3 pm, November, 16th, Sunday, Study (Theodore is reading The Chronicle and commenting to Sebastian.)

Theodore:

I just was reading about the poles and it seems Edmond and Elijah are almost tied.

Sebastian:

That's not good, I'm worried that little Weasel might win the election.

Theodore:

Do you mean Elijah?

Sebastian :

He will ruin the railroad, with his excessive taxation.

Theodore:

Yes, that did enter my mind.

Sebastian :

We need to do something fast before the election is over.

Theodore:

Like what?

Sebastian :

We could kill Elijah!

Theodore: (speaking softly)

Quiet, you don't want the whole house to hear you.

Sebastian : (whispering)

Kill Elijah.

Theodore:

We can't do that, it would look suspicious. All the fingers would point to us. Remember we have a lot to lose in this.

Sebastian:

Then what then?

(Theodore is silent lost in thought)

Theodore:

I got it, We could kill Edmond and I could run into his place and frame our dear friend Elijah.

Sebastian: (whispering)

You're mad, we can't kill Edmond, he's one of Father's closest friends.

Theodore: (speaking sternly)

All the reason to kill him, no one would ever suspect us, and I could run in his place, the grieving friend and supporter. It would be a perfect platform. We could win the sympathy vote!

Sebastian: (thinking for a minute)

Yes, brother you're right, it's brilliant.

Theodore: (whispering)

But, how can we kill 'ol' Edmond?

Sebastian :

I, don't know plant the murder weapon on him somehow.

Theodore :

However, we do it can't make too much noise.

Sebastian:

Maybe, a dagger?

Theodore:

No, you have to get right up on him.

Sebastian :

We could hire someone to do it!

Theodore: (speaking in a slight English accent)

No, then we would have to kill that bloke too.

Sebastian:

Yes, I guess you're right.

Theodore: (thinking for a second and then snapping his fingers)

I think I've got it, Remember a few years ago Father, bought you that bow and arrow set for your birthday?

Sebastian:

Yeah, what about it?

Theodore:

You could climb that old tree outside Edmond's fence and get a good shot at him from there into his upstairs study, I know he goes up there quite often. You'll just have to be patient and wait for him.

Sebastian : (shaking his head yes)

Won't I get seen, climbing up a tree?

Theodore:

No, he lives in the back half of River Street, there are no lanterns there, so it will be nice and dark.

Sebastian : (slightly smiling)

Yes, dear brother that sounds like a great plan, when should we strike?

Theodore:

I'd say the night after the support rally, maybe around 10:30 p.m. or eleven. No one is out in the street at that time.

Sebastian:

I'll wear dark clothing, to hide my identity better.

Theodore: (agreeing)

I almost forgot the second part of my plan.

Sebastian : (looking interested)

What's that?

Theodore:

After you shoot Edmund and kill him, sneak down to the Fairhaven Steamboat Company and I'll break into the storage shed there and you can put the bow and arrows there and kind of hide it. So when the constables go to investigate, they'll find it and, will have our man, sort of speak.

Sebastian: (smiling evilly)

Yes, that's brilliant!

Theodore:

Well, until then brother!

Sebastian : ( excited)

Yes!

(The stage darkens and the curtain closes)
